Chapter Seventeen: Afterlife, Before Death
Trigger Warnings: blood, stabbing, fatality, and mentions of said triggers.
Virgil's P.O.V.
Slowly, my pain faded. I didn't hear anymore crying. I didn't feel Patton's hands wrapped around mine. I didn't feel Roman's arms around me. I didn't feel that I was lying down anymore, but rather that I was standing up. My eyes opened very slowly, and I was met with a blinding white light. Everything around me was white, so much so that it hurt my eyes.
What? I thought. I thought I was dead. I was stabbed, how could I not be dead? This can't be what the afterlife is like, can it?
"Hello, Virgil." said a quiet and shaky voice. I tuned around to see the dark figure.
"Am I.. is this..?" I couldn't bring myself to say what I wanted to say.
"Yes." said the dark figure. "This is where Sides go when they die. I mean, we never actually die until our host is dead, which he is not. To clarify, I'm not dead, I've just been granted entrance to this place. Anyway, yes, a Side is supposed to 'die,' come here, stay here for a few days, then go back. You, however, are going back in about nine minutes."
"Why would I be going back sooner than normal?" I asked, trying and somewhat failing to process everything the dark figure had said and everything that had just happened.
"Well, you were k-killed with something called a Revival Sword. If it's used to kill someone then it brings them back to life after ten minutes." The dark figure looked away, seemingly trying to hide its face.
"So," I began. "I take it you're Camille. Thomas Sanders' curiosity. The Corrupted One. You were forced to kill me." She nodded.
"I'm so sorry!" she cried. "I didn't want to do any of it! I didn't want to take your memories! I didn't want to c-curse you and Roman and L-Logan! I didn't want to terrify Patton! I didn't want to kill you! But I d-didn't have a choice!" Camille broke down, falling to her knees and covering her face. My mind flooded with questions. 'Take your memories?,' I thought. I kneeled down next to her, putting my hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. I nearly gasped when I touched her; her skin felt like glass and was freezing.
"I have to g-go soon.." she whispered after a moment. "There is still one more thing I have to do before I'm free."
"What is it?" I asked, forgetting about my other questions. Camille hesitated to answer.
"Patton." she said simply. I backed away from her, appalled that she was going to go back for Patton.
"I already told you, I don't have a choice!" she yelled. "You were right! I was curious and I got involved in something I shouldn't have and now I'm controlled by someone half the time and I'm stuck in the form of this evil monster and I've killed you know and I'll have to kill someone else and I've tormented all of you for the past week and—"
"Camille!" I yelled, getting her to stop talking. "Camille, calm down." I took a deep breath, trying to bring myself to say what I wanted to.
"This is the last thing you have to do before you're free?" She nodded. I exhaled a shaky breath, screwing up the courage to say my next words. "Do it. Then save us."
"I'll try, Virgil, I'll try. How can you be so calm around me? I'm a monster. I've murdered you. In a matter of minutes I'll have to murder someone else. I've terrorized you and your family." I smiled at her sadly.
"I can't say I have experience with being forced to murder anyone.. but I do know what it feels like to be a monster. That's what everyone thought I was at one point or another; just some anxious monster who's only purpose in life is to destroy Thomas.. it's not a good feeling. I promise you, eventually, things get better somehow." Camille appeared to smile in some way.
"Thank you, Virgil. We have to go now. I'll see you soon." She waved at me, and suddenly everything went black.
Patton's P.O.V.
I held Virgil's hand in mine as he said his goodbyes.
"I love you, Roman." he whispered softly. He moved his hand to hold Roman's. Slowly, his eyes closed, and his hand lost its tight grip.
"Virgil?" Roman said. "Virgil, no, please.." Slowly, Virgil began to fade away.
"Virgil, no!" I yelled, his hand becoming transparent. "Don't leave Virgil!"
"Patton, there's nothing we can do." Logan said, grabbing me in a hug from behind.
Logan's P.O.V.
"No!" Patton screamed. Roman crumbled to the ground, the carpeted floor beneath him becoming drenched with his tears.
"Patton, there's nothing we can do now, he's gone." I said, my voice shaking as I tried to hold back tears. I was in such complete and utter shock that the only thing I could even think to do was to try to comfort Patton.
"No, he's not supposed to die!" Patton shoved his face in my chest. "My dark strange son, my poor little anxious baby, Virgil..." He trailed off, crying profusely.
"He called me Dad." Patton said after a moment.
Owen's P.O.V.
I backed away, complete shock filling me. I had only known him for a few days, and suddenly he was gone. I stared at the ground where he had been, just next to where Roman lay crying on the ground. The white carpet was stained with blood and tears.
Slowly, I moved to hug Patton, not sure what else to do. Patton and Logan both wrapped one of their arms around me.
Milly's P.O.V.
I watched as Owen went to hug Patton and Logan. Despite the fact that I had only known him for a few days, I already felt as though Virgil was a kind of father to me. He introduced me to the best movies and shows and music I've ever seen. He was the first one to step up and interact with me in a manner not relating to various questions and answers.
Virgil didn't deserve what was done to him. He helped cook breakfast for his family that morning despite the fact that (as he later told me) he could barely get himself out of bed that morning with the overwhelming anxiety he was feeling. He ate with his family, he acted all cute and romantic with his boyfriend, he went to go change his clothes, and the next thing you know he's been stabbed to death.
I walked over to Roman, sitting down beside him. He looked up at me as I slowly extended my arms, silently asking to hold him in an embrace. He practically fell onto me, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist.
"I loved him so much." Roman whispered through tears.
"I know you did." I said, a single tear rolling down my cheek. "But remember, you said Rossane's readings have never been wrong, there's no reason that all of the sudden her last two were."
"I know but, Milly, he.. he.."
"There's gotta be something wrong here. Maybe he's not even dead."
"W-what? Not dead, that doesn't make any sense."
"Well, what does make sense anymore? The only way we're going to save him and save ourselves is if we stop thinking about what makes sense and what doesn't. We'll all make it out of this Roman, no matter what." Roman let go of me and backed away, nodding as he wiped his eyes.
Suddenly, muffled crying noise sounded over our own tears. It was different than the crying of anyone else in the room. I turned around, seeing that Patton, Logan, and Owen were all standing up now. Patton seemed to be the only other person to notice it and turned around to see where the noise was coming from.
From the shadows in the corner of the room there was a shine, as if a bit of light caught the surface of something metal. Out of the shadows stepped a figure, one that I immediately identified as the dark figure, which ran at Patton.
"Watch out!" Patton yelled, shoving Owen and Logan away from him. The dark figure quickly revealed a knife and stabbed Patton in the stomach. Patton stumbled backwards against the wall as Owen ran to Roman and I and Logan ran to hold Patton up. Before anything else happened, the dark figure disappeared without a trace. Then Thomas showed up.
"Guys what is— Patton!" He rushed to Patton. "What happened? Where's Virgil? Why do I have so many emotions and no anxiety?"
"Virgil's dead Thomas." I said shortly, my eyes filling with tears again. "He was stabbed by the dark figure, and so was Patton."
"Patton, Patton, stay with me Patton!" Logan was saying frantically as Patton slid down the wall to the floor.
"Logan, please," Patton said calmly. "Just hold on to me." Logan moved to hold Patton the way Roman had held Virgil.
"You all know.. I love you with all my heart, don't you?" Patton said with a smile, the tears in his eyes beginning to fall again. All of us nodded.
"I heard what you said, Milly.." he whispered. "And in just a few minutes.. I'll go see if you're right... He might not be dead.. somehow... Thomas, don't worry about anything.. even if I'm gone, I'll do what I can..." Logan began pleading with Patton desperately. He turned to look at all of us as if silently begging for us to do something. But we all knew it was too late. Very slowly, Logan raised his hand and placed it on Patton's cheek, carefully wiping away a few tears.
"Logan, it's like you said.. there's nothing we can do now... Besides, I p-promised to.. protect you." Much like Virgil had done, Patton moved his hand to hold Logan's.
"I love you, Patton." Logan said softly, his voice shaking heavily. "I will search for you, alive or dead, and I will find a way to save you."
"I know you will... I love you too..."
Patton's P.O.V.
I'm not sure how Virgil was able to say so much; I could barely say what I did. With the last bit of strength I had, I looked at everyone around me: Thomas, Logan, Roman, Milly, and Owen. It hurt me to look at all of them, not knowing whether or not it would be the last time.
Dying is strange. It's not quite as terrifying as I once thought. I thought it would be painful, but I was in some way wrong. I could feel the energy draining from me. The less energy I had, the more the pain went away. The funny thing is that a matter of minutes before, I wouldn't have wanted to go, and yet, in my last moments, I was perfectly content with my fate. Slowly my vision faded, my hearing as well. The last thing I remember was Logan's arms around me and his hand in mine.
A.N.
So about the *cough cough* recent events in the book, well, there's really not much to say. I'm not gonna say there wasn't any warning or that there's no way you could've seen it coming, because there were warnings since the first chapter (not to mention the trigger warnings too) and it would've been reasonable to see it coming. I won't lie though, I almost cried when I revised these chapters.
Anyway, yeah, that's it for now. Adiós.
