Chapter Fifteen: Family

Patton's P.O.V.
I smiled when I saw Virgil and Milly walk down the stairs. I always knew they would have a special relationship, from the moment Milly showed up.

"What's for dinner, Patton?" Milly asked.

"Roasted chicken and veggies." I replied happily. "Everyone come and get what you want!" Quickly, all five of my fellow Sides came scrambling into the kitchen to fix themselves their dinners. All of them smiled and thanked me as they spooned vegetables and bits of chicken onto their plates. When we had all gotten food and sat down at the table we began to eat.

I had gotten Thomas to fix the dinner table to add four more seats; one for Milly, one for Owen, one for Camille, and one extra to make everything even. I insisted upon the seat for Camille, since I was determined that she would someday be able to sit there peacefully and eat with us. Our old square table had been replaced with a much bigger one, each side properly fitting two people rather than one. With the new arrangement, I got to be right next to Logan. Roman and Virgil sat across from me, and Milly and Owen were to my left.

For nearly ten minutes all six of us sat and ate quietly. Despite the chaos before and after that moment, despite the fear and anger that we held in our hearts, despite the knowledge of what would happen to us, it was truly peaceful.

Together we ate as a family. Sure, we were a terrified and messed up family, but were were still a family, and at that moment, that was really all that mattered to me.

Owen's P.O.V.
Apples were the first thing I'd ever eaten. Golden apples from the Enchanted Forest that Midnight gave to me. I really love her, I always have, because she's just so nice and caring but also powerful and brave. Midnight was the second person I ever met, the first being Milly.

The apples I ate were amazing, being both sweet and sour at the same time. Of course, they tasted different than anything else in the world, because they were made of pure magic. When I ate them, I thought that surely they tasted better than anything in the whole universe. After I ate Patton's chicken and veggies, I knew I had been wrong. That was exactly what I told him, to which he laughed and thanked me.

I really liked Patton's smile and his laugh. Logan's right, no one in the world smiled or laughs the way he does. Of course, Logan says the same thing about me now, but both statements are true.

"So, how was everyone's day?" Roman asked with a chuckle and grin.

"Fan-freaking-tastic!" Virgil replied. Milly, Patton, and I laughed a bit.

"Hey guys, why did chicken believe he was claustrophobic?" Patton asked, raising his fork which had a clump of chicken on it. "Because he didn't like being cooped up." Any of us prone to laughing—me, Milly, Roman, and Patton— laughed, while Virgil gave his typical grin and nod. Even Logan gave a very small smile.

"Nice one, Patton." Roman complimented.

"Oh yeah? How about this one:" Patton paused for a moment. "What did the police expect after a chicken farmer died under mysterious circumstances? Fowl play!"

"Ah, classic." Roman said with a smile as most of us laughed.

"Excellent puns, Patton," Logan said. "But all of you, please, don't talk with your mouth full."

"Oh come on, Logan," Roman protested. "We're having fun. We need a little fun and jokes right now, don't you think?" Logan opened his mouth, only to glance at Patton and stay silent. His face fell from humored yet annoyed to embarrassed and sorrowful.

"Please do talk with your mouth full!" Patton exclaimed, wrapping one arm around Logan's shoulder.

"At least be courteous enough to cover your mouths." Logan said, smiling sadly and grabbing Patton's hand. I always wondered just how obscenely horrible Logan felt, knowing that the love of his life would be ripped away from him in a few days time.

Actually, I wondered how horrible everyone felt. Roman, with all his self-confidence and arrogance, must have felt powerless against fate. Patton and Virgil surely were terrified as to what would happen to them. Of course, everyone's feelings would be much different if any of us knew what would really happen.

Still, despite the uncomfortable knowledge we all held in the back of our minds, we carried on with laughing and joking and story telling, covering our mouths when we spoke with food in our mouth. Soon enough the food was gone, but all of us remained at the table. Eventually we did clean the plates, but it didn't stop us and our talking. Before we even knew it, it was nearing eight o'clock and we were still talking.

Milly's P.O.V.
I said almost nothing throughout the entire conversation. Instead, I just listened. I hadn't even been alive for two whole days, so it wasn't like I really had much to tell in the first place. The older Sides, however, had a lot of stories.

No matter what I may say or may have said, that day-long conversation meant more to me than almost anything else. It was the first true conversation I'd ever had that didn't involve question after question after question and a million answers and explanations. I did still have one question, though, which I asked after a short pause.

"Guys, what's it like to have a family?" A sort of awkward silence fell over us as Patton, Logan, Roman, and Virgil all exchanged questioning glances.

"Well," Patton began. "It's pretty fun. You get a lot of people to hang out with and tell jokes to."

"You also get a lot of people who annoy the crap out of you." Virgil added with a fake smile. Patton gave him a quick warning glare.

"You have plenty of people to learn from." Logan chimed in.

"There's also lots of people to tell your stories with." Roman added. After a short pause, I asked my second question.

"Well, are all of you my family?" There was no pause between my question and Patton's answer.

"Of course Milly! Me, Logan, Roman, Virgil, Owen, Camille, and Thomas.. we're all your family." I looked around the room, making eye contact with everyone.

"Hey, why don't we watch Lilo and Stitch," Roman suggested. "After all, ohana means family."

~time skip~

Within a few minutes we had set up pillows and blankets all around, and all six of us were sat down in the living room watching Lilo and Stitch. When the movie neared the end, I understood what Roman meant before; ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

Slowly, I took a good long look at my five fellow sides. Next to me was Owen, smiling and clutching a pillow to his stomach as if giving it some kind of hug. Next to him was Logan, who was holding Patton in his lap. On the couch above me was Roman, who had a childish look in his eyes as he watched the last bits of the movie. Virgil was asleep with his head resting on his boyfriend's shoulder.

I smiled peacefully, leaning up against the couch and letting my own eyes slip close. I think, I thought it myself as the movie ended and I fell asleep, that despite the chaos, I'm going to really like my family.

–Curiosity–Camille–Corrupted One–'s P.O.V.
In the hallway I sat quietly, watching Lilo and Stitch with the six people who didn't know I was there. I was glad they had finally figured out who I was, but I nearly cried when Patton said I was part of their family. I knew that if I hadn't made my way up that mountain, then I could've already had the family I was supposedly a part of.

I also knew that, with them considering me family, what I would be forced to do later would only be even harder.
