Chapter Eight: The Potion
Patton's P.O.V.
"I combined my knowledge of medicine and magic and made this." Logan said. He was trying to hide it, but I could sense just how proud of himself he was. I smiled at how adorable he was as he presented his potion to us.
"It is a reversal potion. You both need to to drink about half a cup of it, but I made extra if necessary." I stepped back, Virgil and Roman as well. Virgil pulled a notebook and pen out of the bag he hand around his shoulder and wrote something down on it, then showed the writing to Roman.
"I don't feel comfortable with drinking random potions." he read in a choppy and monotone voice.
"Don't worry, Virgil," Logan assured him. "There is only a five percent chance of anything going wrong. At the very least, there's no possible way you could die from this." I could tell from the look on Virgil's face that even the smallest possibility of a single thing going wrong was concerning him.
"Oh don't worry kiddo," I said to my poor little anxious baby. "I know Logan wouldn't make anything for you that isn't safe."
"Yeah," Roman added in a soothing voice. "And to prove it's safe, I will go first!" Logan grinned, some of his pride showing, and prepared a glass for him.
"We should give it about ten minutes to cool." Logan said. "In the meantime, you could possibly tell us what you did in the Imagination." Roman nodded excitedly as Virgil rolled his eyes. We all went to sit in the living room, where Roman told us the exciting story about a reading from a seer, a trip to the Enchanted Forest, mountain climbing, book reading, and so much more interesting stuff!
"You know," Roman said when the story was done. "You never did tell me what the reading was." He turned to Virgil, who stared back at him with fearful wide eyes. He grabbed the notebook and pen again, scribbled something down, and showed it to Roman. He didn't read it out loud this time, simply sighed and shrugged. I still managed to see it just before Virgil closed the book: 'I don't want to talk about it.'
"The potion should be ready now." said Logan, breaking the short but awkward silence. The four of us stood and walked into the kitchen. Virgil wrote something again and showed to Roman as Logan got the glass of potion out of the fridge.
"Virgil, it's fine." Roman said, beginning to sound annoyed. "Logan would not make anything for us to consume that wasn't safe." Logan gave the glass to Roman. He looked at for a moment, seemingly inspecting it, before chugging all of it in a few seconds.
"See, Virgil, I'm–" He stopped, clutching his stomach and covering his mouth. "I'm not fine I'm definitely not fine!" He ran out of the kitchen and strait to his room, locking the door behind him. Me, Virgil, and Logan stood in shock, not knowing what to say or do other than look at each other and back at Roman's door. Then, after a minute or two of staring, Logan ran off to his room.
"I must have done something wrong." he mumbled as he left. Virgil wrote something else in his notebook and showed it to me: 'I told him so.' We both chuckled a bit before I realized it was kinda rude and told him not to say that at the moment. He rolled his eyes and wrote to me that he couldn't say anything at the moment.
Roman's P.O.V.
I thought I was going to throw up, so I ran to my bathroom and hunched myself over the toilet. Nothing happened, so I sat down on the floor of the bathroom, extreme pain in my stomach. The pain started to shoot throughout my whole body, and I let a scream of agony before I blacked out.
Virgil's P.O.V.
We heard a scream and immediately ran to Roman's door.
"Roman! Open the door!" Patton yelled. I got an idea and ran back to my room. I grabbed a bobby-pin from my bathroom and ran back to Roman's door, unlocking it with the bobby-pin. We stepped inside to find that Roman wasn't in his room, but the bathroom door was shut. I knocked on it forcefully to no avail. So, I opened that door with the bobby-pin too, letting out a gasp when I opened the door.
Lying on the floor was Roman, but he was very different. He was very small, I mean probably only two feet tall. He looked like a toddler. Suddenly his eyes shot open and he stood up, only to fall over.
"Vugil? Pa'n?" he said with a heavy lisp. "Way, am I a toller?!" He screamed with realization, then he started crying profusely. Panicking, I picked him up and carried him into the hallway, Patton following close behind. We reached Logan's door, which Patton opened for me, and barged in. The intellectual stared at me and Roman in shock.
"Is that—" I nodded. "It can't be—" I nodded again. "Oh, um.. oh my. Ok, Roman? Can you shape-shift?" Roman looked up at Logan and appeared to be trying to morph himself into his normal form. Nothing happened.
"Alright, I need you to take care of him while I figure this out." I angrily stormed out of the room and off to my own, a tiny screaming Roman still in my arms. I fumbled with the door knob until it opened then slammed the door behind me. I sat Roman down on my bed and kneeled on the floor in front of him.
"Shhh, you're fine, you're alright!" I assured him.
"V-Vugil!" he yelled through tears. "Wha is happenin' to me?" Roman looked absolutely terrified, but oddly adorable. I shook my head and shrugged, just as confused as he was. He was starting to cry even harder, shooting my anxiety through the roof. It's natural human nature that the high-pitched sound of an infant or child's cry will alarm us, and it seemed my 'human' nature was kicking in.
I was panicking more and more, wondering what in the world to do. My thoughts raced, my anxiety building, until somehow I managed to form an idea.
"Hakuna Matata," I sang softly. Almost immediately Roman's crying slowed to a stop as he listened closely to my singing.
"What a wonderful phrase, Hakuna Matata, ain't no passing craze," I picked him up and danced around with him, holding his small hands to help him stand.
"It means no worries, for the rest of your days," Now Roman was singing (the best he could) along with me. "It's our problem free, philosophy! Hakuna Matata!"
We fell over on the ground laughing, and for a moment I forgot everything. The curse was nonexistent, I could talk, Roman could sing, and we were all happy. For a moment all that existed was me in my dark room and this adult in the body of a little kid, bringing more light to my room and I then there had been in weeks. But then I glanced over at my door and snapped back to reality.
Standing in the door frame was a very confused looking Logan, Patton appearing close behind him. I stopped laughing and stood, brushing myself off awkwardly out of habit. Patton seemed to be using everything he had in him to not laugh, while Logan just looked still very confused. I stepped back and nudged Roman with my foot, who seemed to understand and shot right up to stand next to me, wobbling for a second before grabbing my leg for support.
"Well then," Logan said. "I am not even going to ask what happened. Anyway, I have come to tell you that I have, quite obviously, made a mistake in my calculations. It appears that the potion has essentially de-aged Roman. From my new calculations, I've determined that his mindset could also possibly be altered, almost as if you combined Roman's current mindset and his four year old mindset. I believe that the alterations in his behavior should also vary while he is in this state. I'm not sure why, but it appears that his clothes are also changing with him, which is strange but extremely helpful. He should change back to normal in around twenty-three and a half hours. How he will change, however, I haven't the slightest idea."
Patton stepped forward to be next to Logan, and I could've sworn that I saw his hand twitch a bit, almost as some instinct of his was telling him to reach out for a certain someone's hand. I'm not saying that I didn't know about them, because I always did, it's just that I pretended not to know.
"Kiddo," Patton said. "It will be your job to watch over him until he's back to normal. Now, that means I'm putting my trust in you to ensure he is still okay by the end of this potion's effects. In other words, if he is hurt in any way when I come to check on you two, I will have to ground you." I wanted to protest that he couldn't ground me, but I didn't bother and instead just nodded.
"And I'm not kidding either." Patton giggled to himself a little, and even earned a grin from me. Logan rolled his eyes, but I still saw a barely noticeable smile cross his face.
Logan's P.O.V.
Patton walked swiftly across the room to Roman and messed up his hair, a smile on his face so big I would think it'd hurt.
"I'll be with Logan in his room if you need me." he whispered softly to Virgil. The anxious Side nodded, another grin crossing his face, as Patton and I went back to my room. When we arrived, I shut the door and turned to Patton. He was still and silent, staring directly at my bathroom door. He turned to me slowly, and I noticed his face had suddenly gone form perky to terrified, sending a chill down my spine.
"Logan," he said quietly. "There's something in your bathroom."
A.N.
So yeah, I know this chapter was kinda weird I guess, but it's basically just a long setup for the two major plot points I have planned for the next couple chapters. Alrighty then, adiós.
