Out of Time
This can't be happening. Luna was attacked, according to the text that Raven sent. I got the text from Raven at 9:30. At first I thought it wasn't important, but when I opened it to send a text back, the news just flashed in my face. Luna's one of my best friends, so naturally, I'm concerned about her. But Raven says she's fine, that she and Jack are taking care of her.
I forward her message to Cole, letting him know that immediately after school we're stopping by the warehouse and checking on Luna. He texts back almost right after I send him the message.
C: OK. Should I bring some food? Isn't her favorite chicken and mashed potatoes?
A: Yeah, with bread crumbs on the chicken and gravy on the potatoes.
C: I'll get right on that.
I smile. Cole loves cooking and baking. I wouldn't be surprised if he opens his own restaurant or bakery when he's older. He makes some of the best food I've tasted. I text Raven telling her we'll be over at 3.
The next day at school, I don't see Luna or Raven. I'd assume that Raven is keeping her away from the public for now, seeing as it's all over the news that someone got attacked. I'm guessing Raven doesn't want anyone pestering her about it, and maybe, just maybe... I shiver at this thought. Maybe Raven's taken Luna into hiding. To keep other criminals from targeting her. Ok, ok, deep breath time. In, 2, 3, 4. Hold. Out, 2, 3, 4. Repeat.
As much as I may not like this theory, it's probably the one that makes the most sense. Well, that's going to be in the back of my mind for the rest of forever. When dismissal comes, I find Cole. He's carrying a plastic container with the food in it. I hope Luna's okay. I know something like that would leave some damage.
When we arrive at the warehouse, I knock and Raven opens the door.
"Get in here.", she hisses, yanking me and Cole inside and checking outside before slamming the door. Once the door is closed, Raven sighs and rubs her face. "Never mind, I'm not even going to yell right now. Here.", she says, taking the container from Cole and walking towards the microwave.
Cole and I move around, a little confused as to what to do, until we see Luna and then we just run over and sit next to her. Cole starts asking a million questions, which is Raven's breaking point.
"COLE!", she yells from the kitchen. He immediately shuts up.
"It's fine.", Luna says. Raven walks back in with a plate for Luna and hands it to her.
"I don't want them to trigger anything.", she says. Luna huffs and angrily stabs the potatoes with a fork.
"I'm fine, mom.", she says angrily. Raven raises an eyebrow and puts a hand on her hip.
"If you use that tone with me again...", Raven starts.
"Don't start. I can take care of myself."
"You obviously can't. It's only going to get tougher from here, and I may be so busy trying to save our goddamn lives, that I may not be around to help you if something happens to you again! Do you realize how scary of a thought that is for me? It's been 300 years since I had a sister, someone to care for as an older sibling. If you don't accept or want my help, you're most likely going to end up dead. So that's you're choice."
"You're just saying it like that to be dramatic. It was one time, could've happened to anyone."
"Am I? Am I really? Because, you know, now an entire criminal web is after you, me, and everyone we know! So unless I can figure something out with some others, we're pretty much going to die. And then I'm going to come back, but none of you will. We have to be extra cautious now, especially you, because you're all over the news, which put up a photo of you, which means that literally everyone in this town knows who the hell you are!", Raven says, before their argument gets even more heated and Jack has to separate them. Raven angrily unfolds her wings and flies up to one of the old overhead walkways. I see her walking along it and watching us.
Jack sighs and rubs his face.
"Should we come back later?", I ask. He shakes his head.
"They've both been upset for a while. Raven because of the attack, and Luna's convinced she's fine on her own. She really isn't though. She doesn't know how to handle the people we're dealing with now.", he says. I nod. Ok then. "Take what Raven just said as a warning. She might not always be around if she's trying to get help."
"Okay.", Cole says, quietly. Jack smiles at him and nods in thanks.
"Luna, eat.", he says, before walking away and up to the walkway where Raven is.
"Fine.", she says, picking up the plate again and starting to eat. I sit down across from her and Cole sits next to her. "This is good. Thanks."
"Anytime. So we just want to know, are you ok?", he asks. She nods and opens her mouth to speak but I shush her, and the words I say next are a shock, even to me.
"That was all we needed. Raven's right. Don't talk."
"But-"
"No." She doesn't answer that time. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "We should probably go with what Raven says right now. Cause I don't know how to deal with these people, neither does Cole. Or you. If anyone can get us out of this, it's Raven."
They both nod solemnly. I don't know how I feel about. I can't imagine life without Luna or Cole, or even Raven. And I'm not just saying that because she's going to try to keep me alive and that I probably wouldn't have a life without her. Her dad probably would've gunned all 3 of us down right there.
There really isn't anything to talk about after that, but I hear Jack and Raven on the walkway, talking softly. I try to hear their conversation. Jack seems to be consoling her, because I can hear her say something followed by him quieting her.
"Jack, we have to go about this more carefully... In all my years, I haven't had to deal with something this big.", she says, with what sounds like a small sob.
"Sh... It's alright. Even if we don't make it, we'll know you did the best you could. Let me just ask you, as a promise, please don't forget us.", he asks.
"Never.", she says, basically whimpers. "I... I can try talking to my boss about, see if there's any advice there... But I think for the time being, it's going to be the six of us. And...", her voice gets too quiet from there. I look at Cole and Luna, who are talking about something or other. I stand up.
"Angie?", Cole asks. I pull him up and leave without a word. We get back to my house and to my room before we break the silence between us.
"We're going to have to be soldiers now, we have to be brave.", I say, sitting on my bed. "We can't rely on just Raven to save us. We have to protect ourselves. She can only do as much as she can, and we have to meet her halfway."
I say this more to myself than him, because I'm still getting used to this and I need to think out loud right now. I didn't know how scared I was going to be until I heard Raven's tone on the overhead walkway. Cole sits down on the chair at my desk.
"Angie... calm down... I know you're probably freaking out inside right now, and honestly, I am too. But if we're going to be thrown headfirst into this, we need to learn control. I'm probably going to forget half the stuff she tells us.", he says, gently grabbing me by the shoulders.
"But-"
"Anything from here on out that Raven tells us, could save our lives, which also means that our lives are five times more at stake. And I'm terrified. That I'm going to die, you're going to die, Jack's going to die. I'm not ready for this. But we're going to have to do the best we can.", he says. I look at him. I understand what he's saying, but at the same time I don't. My head really hurts... I collapse on my pillow and black out for a few hours.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
When I wake up, Cole has two servings of dinner on a tray, which he puts on the desk. He hands me one of the plates. Chicken and rice.
"Nice nap?", he asks, sitting down at my desk. I nod and look at the clock on my desk. 6:49. I take the plate from him and starts eating it quickly. I am so hungry... He watches me and starts eating slower than me, but still hurried. I stop eating for a minute and let my stomach settle before looking at him. He has some rice on his bottom lip, so I lean forward and swipe it off with my thumb.
"You had a little something right there...", I say. I look at him and burst out laughing. He joins in and we sit there laughing for a minute before he sticks his fork in my mouth and leaves my lips covered in rice.
"You have a little something.", he says gesturing to his mouth area to show me. I wipe it off and eat it. He turns away, giggling.
"Exaggerate much?", I say, playfully shoving him. He dramatically falls out of the chair and onto the floor. "Drama Queen."
"Oh, please. I do it best. I'm fabulous.", he says from the floor, doing the Z snap. I roll my eyes and pull him up and onto the bed and he faceplants onto the bed. I lean onto my back.
"You good?", I ask. He mumbles and flaps his hand in my direction. "What?"
"I'm just gonna stay here...", he mumbles into my blanket. I roll him over and grab a pillow and hit him with it. He grumbles and tries to take it from me, but when he gives up on that, he starts tickling me.
"Cole... Cole s-stop...", I laugh. He stops and grins. We actually do our science homework homework, with the occasional space pun about Venus or Pluto, and then we turn on Netflix and watch Saturday Night Live. He falls asleep halfway through Weekend Update in the second episode we watch, so I move him over and finish watching it before shutting my computer and turning off the lights. I'm asleep as soon as I get both of us under the covers.
-----------------------------------------------------
I wake up in the middle of the night and look at the clock. 2:12. I look over to my curtains. The street lights seem unusually bright. And is someone throwing a silent party? There's red and blue flashing lights outside, but I can't hear any music. I get up and look at Cole. He's still completely asleep. I peak out the curtains. There are police up and down the street and their lights are on. There's also two ambulance with paramedics pushing two stretchers into them and a fire truck... Oh my God...
I get dressed as quickly as a person can at 2:20 in the morning and chuck a pillow at Cole, which hits him in the face and he sits bolt upright.
"Whaz goin on?", he asks sleepily. "Angie?" He rubs his eyes and looks out the window before looking at me and bolting out the door, effectively dragging me outside. I see a person run up past the trucks and stand on the lawn, facing the house on fire.
It was Mr. and Mrs. Hemmington's house. They were the old couple across the street who were like another set of grandparents to me. That was probably them in the ambulance.
Cole talks to the police and I slip past them and come up next to the figure and look at them. It's Raven. She's looking intensely at the fire with wide eyes. I can see the flames reflecting in her eyes as she watches with a pained expression. She looks at me, her expression not changing. I feel intense pain and sorrow, looking in her eyes. I have an idea of what she's trying to tell me, but I don't want to believe it.
Her eyes tell me they didn't make it. And that this was an accident, but it wasn't meant to be. I run back inside and grab my phone before running back out and grabbing Cole by the hand and following Raven back to the warehouse, where Luna and Jack are on the couch with blankets and cups of coffee, in front of a fire.
As soon as the door is closed, I look at Raven, who's turned away from us.
"What's going on?", I ask, my tone hinting at fear and anxiety.
"That fire? Wasn't an accident. Do you live around there?", she asks, turning to us. I nod.
"Yeah. Across the street.", I say.
"There was a fire?", Luna asks from the couch. Raven looks at her and nods.
"The house across the street from her house. Made to look like a water heater fire. That was supposed to be your house. Thank God they had the wrong address.", she says. I nod, and start to piece things together.
"Do you think they had someone on me? Like, watching me?", I ask.
"Probably, but most likely by camera. Did you go over there a lot?", she asks. I nod. "They probably thought you lived there then. Or they're just doing that to scare you. My guess is the latter.", she says.
"Because if there was someone watching you, then wouldn't they have seen you leave? They're trying to get under your skin right now, break you down so it's easier for them to attack.", Jack says, putting the cup of coffee he was holding on the table. Raven flies up to the walkway where she was yesterday. I follow her. I find her leaning on the railing looking down at Luna, Jack, and Cole.
"So?", she asks, still looking over the edge. "I know you're not ok."
"Yeah... I'm not.", I say leaning back against the railing, facing the opposite direction of her. "They were like grandparents to me. I can't imagine them not being around anymore."
I look to my left and she's looking back at me.
"I know what it's like. To lose people like that. I've been through that more times than you can imagine. 335 years and you go through that a lot.", she says, looking back out. "It's just part of what happens."
"You're 335?", I ask. She nods.
"The first time I lost someone like that, was during the Salem Witch Trials. They took my mom and my little sister. The irony. They kill all the girls in the family who weren't witches, but the one who is, they let live. I was never suspected.", she says. I get a feeling of guilt in my chest. That's probably what contributed to making her like this now. I remember what Luna said.
"Something happened to her that made her like this."
She's probably going for revenge, that's why.
"Wow.", I say. That's the only thing I can say. She sighs. I can see something drip down. She's crying. Great.
"I don't understand why I'm the one they always go after. Yeah, I'm the master of my trade, but why does that make me the 'specialist'?", she says angrily, her tears stopping and she reaches up and wipes them away. I want to comfort her, but I also don't want to get cursed or punched.
"Well, what can we do? If there are people after us, how are we going to go about this?", I ask. She looks up.
"For starters, I have a whole list. I'm going to talk to my boss to see if there's anything else to add to it.", she says, right as the door opens and Serena runs in and slams the door. Raven stands on the railing and dives off it and glides down to her. I rush down the ladder and follow her.
"Good news!", Serena calls. Raven perks up immediately. "The guy who lit the fire? They found him and arrested him. He was apparently hiding in an old quarantined house that was being used as a drug den."
"Well, that's not very effective is it?", Raven says sarcastically. Serena shakes her head.
"And, get this. They found a whole bunch of people who were also watching her at the house as well, so they arrested them as well. They also found a whole bunch of plans for her. Kidnapping, drugging, killing.", Serena says, holding up the pile of papers and pictures in her hand. Raven takes them and waves her hand to create a bulletin board, and starts pinning them up. I think I look confused because Serena addresses me. "It helps her to see everything at once. She can piece it together easier that way."
"How did you get this?", Jack asks, coming up behind Raven and watching her.
"I snuck it passed the police. I'm good with pickpocketing as well.", she replies. So that's where my lunch money went... Focus, Angie.
Jack turns back to Raven and watches her put it together like a puzzle. Luna's talking with Cole about the food he brought her earlier. Holy crap, my brain's on overdrive. I see Raven turn and open her wings and fly away.
"Where's she going?", Luna asks. I look to Jack and Serena.
"She's going to see our boss to see about getting extra help. I'm going to hack the school computers.", Serena says.
"Why?", Cole asks.
"Because. Do you want, like, a month's worth of unexcused absences? We can't live life normally right now until we take care of this, which means Raven's going to take care of the memory part, and I'm going to keep us 'in school'.", she says, putting 'in school' into air quotes.
"We're not going to go to school?", Luna asks. Serena looks at her.
"Sweetie, if you want that whole cycle to start again, then by all means, go to school.", she says, setting up her computer and starting to type.
Jack moves away from the bulletin board and faces Luna.
"Give me your phones and any other electronic devices.", he says. I'm hesitant to give it to him. He sighs and rolls his eyes. "Serena's not the only one capable of professional hacking. We can't have the GPS being tracked."
After hearing the explanation, it makes much more sense, so I don't have any second thoughts when I hand him my phone. He collects my phone and Ipod, Cole's phone, and Luna's phone. What about your phones?
Serena must have read my mind, because she responds.
"Professional hacker. Got software protections installed on our phones.", she says, holding up a peace sign, while not taking her eyes off her screen.
"You guys need to stay here. It's a safety precaution. At least until Raven gets back.", Jack says, disabling the GPS on the phones and turning off the electronics and putting them on the table.
"Do you have books?", Cole asks. Jack looks at him.
"Yeah. We do. Follow me.", he says, leading Cole up the ladder and along the walkway to the walkway that goes around the perimeter of the place.
"Oh my God, you guys have the largest book collection I've ever seen.", I hear Cole say.
"Well, most of them are Raven's so... Spend 335 years on this rock, and you're bound to start a collection.", Jack replies. Hm...
I climb up the ladder and walk to where they are and gasp. Holy crap, Cole was right. Largest book collection I've seen. The shelves stretch from one end of the warehouse to the other and the shelves are so high there's a movable ladder attached.
"Have you guys tried for a world record on world's largest book collection?", Cole asks. Jack chuckles.
"That would kinda blow our cover as criminals. This is supposed to be our undercover place.", he says. "Come this way. This is the nonfiction section, as you can see.", he points to a beautifully carved sign on top of the bookshelf that says 'nonfiction'. He leads us through the rest of the nonfiction section and through the fiction, fantasy, folktales, science, and science fiction sections. I have a biography of Thomas Jefferson and an old book of Irish folktales, Cole has a fantasy book and a book on Marie Curie's work.
We head back down and Cole hands Luna the fantasy book and sits down across from her in a chair. I sit in the chair next to him and start reading about Thomas Jefferson.
A/N: Sorry about the late update. I'll try to get more written, but it's been really busy for me lately. Anyway, comments and feedback are welcome. Adieu mon amis.
