PART 6: Panic at the Library .8

They stopped at the bookstore to pick up Sammy and then, before anyone could ask any questions, Franklin dragged her right out of the bookstore and back to his mansion.

He had wanted to go faster but he had realized that Kelly was limping.

She was hurt.

He could see that.

But he was just so goddamn angry at her that he didn't care.

"Up the stairs," he ordered once he got her into the building. She had to use the railing to get up there, and she took the steps one at a time.

Franklin had watched her get up to the top and then turned back to Margaret who had been watching him intently. "Don't let anyone into my office until further notice."

Her eyebrow furrowed. It always did when he told her to keep people out of his office when Kelly was in there with him, but he didn't care.

He followed her up there, got into the office and slammed his door shut.

Honestly, he was much more door-slam-ie since she came into his life. Probably because she frustrated him so much.

She was currently digging through her backpack for something, and Franklin, well, he was about to explode.

"I really, honestly, would like to know what in the hell you were thinking?" Franklin thundered. Kelly turned her face up to him surprised but unafraid. "Seriously! What were you thinking?"

"Franklin..."

"No!" he cried. "Kelly, she gave you a list of rules and the first one was don't wander off!"

"I know but..."

"No buts! You said you could handle this?!" he shouted. "You promised me up and down that you would listen to the rules, that you wouldn't get yourself into trouble. And you fell through the fucking floor! Through the floor! And then you just thought let's go on a walk through the tunnels Stephanie said wasn't safe!"

"Stop it," Kelly said almost a little too calmly and Franklin paused in his tirade. "You're making Sammy cry."

Franklin's eyes turned down to Sammy who was clinging to Kelly's leg, his little face tear stained and pressed into the side of her leg.

"Oh... I... I'm sorry Sammy."

But Sammy wouldn't look at him and honestly that hurt. He had worked so hard to get that boy to like him and now he was worried he had dashed that completely.

"Look, I get it. I messed up, but like... I think the library lured me into it," she said and Franklin rolled his eyes. Yeah, blame the library. Her eyes turned back down to the note book she had in her hands, and began flipping through the pages almost frantically.

He wasn't sure why she was so interested in it until she suddenly went: "Oh! I knew it! Should we get Tinker now, or just put it on the totem and go check on him later?"

Franklin almost sighed. "You found another totem piece?"

She immediately went for his pocket where she had slipped the googly-glasses. She pulled them out and then showed them to him. They looked just like regular old googly-glasses. She must have been seeing some kind of sparkle though.

"Told you I needed them."

"What you should have said was that they were for a totem, and you know it."

"Right, Sammy, you stay here, we're going to go put this on the totem..."

"I wanna see!" the little boy cried, no longer crying. Okay, maybe he was just putting on a show for Kelly and Franklin.

"You should see Vaneer first though," Franklin said, gesturing to the leg she had been limping on. "Get your leg checked out."

Kelly merely scoffed at him. "You made me run on it, you made me go up the stairs and you didn't care then. I'm not leaving until I'm sure I'm right."

Alright, that was fair.

She then turned back to Sammy "Kay, Sammy, you can come, but you have to hold onto us, alright?'

Sammy answered by taking first Kelly's hand and then Franklin's. And his undead heart skipped a bit of a beat.

He still wasn't used to this kid liking him the way he did and he was very pleased to see that he hadn't scared him off entirely.

Together they walked into the Hall of Totems. They had to go through the door one at a time but that wasn't hard to maneuver.

She led them all the way to Tinker's totem and then placed the glasses on the statue. It looked ridiculous that plaster statue with the googly-glasses dangling down.

And then they waited.

Just like last time, there was a whistle, like a kettle building to a boil. Sammy yelped and buried his head into Kelly's leg again, his grip on Franklin's hand deathly tight.

Franklin moved again, putting himself in between them and the statue as the whistle grew and grew into a soft but subtle pop.

Once again Franklin saw nothing, but he felt the wind whip through him. It unsteadied him when it hit him but didn't knock him over. Both Kelly and Sammy were fine.

Kelly seemed to be looking around at something her eyes glassy, sparkling, a distant but happy smile on her face.

He wondered what she saw.

Was it sparkles raining down on them like confetti?

Together they turned back to where the statue had been and found that, just like Veera, the statue was gone and in it's place was a painting.

This painting had human Tinker in it, his regular human size, his glasses on his face, surrounded by shoes.

"I bet if we go to check on him, he'll be normal," Kelly said already turning away. "Let's go see."

She took one step and winced as she put pressure on her leg.

"Nope, we're going to Vaneer before you do anymore damage to your leg," he said and Kelly groaned.

"I will get Tinker while you're in there, alright?"

It clearly wasn't alright, because Kelly breathed out a: "Thank you," to him.

She leant against Franklin as an assistance to help her walk and once again his undead heart betrayed him by skipping a beat. Seriously, what was happening to him? He didn't like it at all.

They got out of the hall and Kelly turned her face up to him. "You know I was right, right?"

"You're an idiot, is what you are," he snapped.

She smiled up at him like it didn't matter at all that she almost got herself killed over this. He didn't know how to tell her it did matter, that he didn't want her to get hurt, even if it meant she was breaking their curses. Not without making it seem like he cared more than he wanted to admit he did.

He just had to hope that he could keep her from doing something like this again.
