PART 6: Panic at the Library .5
Was Franklin happy that Stephanie had told Kelly about the library? No. Why? Because the place was dangerous.
Was he happy that Kelly had wanted to go in with Stephanie for the next restocking? No. Why? Because the place was dangerous and Kelly, so far, had only been good at one thing, which was getting in trouble.
But he had also said he was going to trust her more, so he had let her go. Even though everything in his system had told him not to let her, or at the very least to go with her. He had wanted to prove to her that he wouldn't be that controlling anymore, so he hadn't.
He was regretting it now.
Because he hadn't gotten any work that day, he had spent all of it worrying about her and how she was faring.
He kept trying to tell himself that it was stupid, she was probably perfectly fine. There wasn't any way she could really get hurt unless she ignored Stephanie's rules. And at that point, if she did, he figured he'd be allowed to lecture her about being stupid. He also figured he wouldn't have to trust her again.
What he actually wanted, though, was for her to be fine.
For the first half of the morning he had worried himself away. After lunch, however, when it became clear to him that no one was going to come sprinting in screaming for his assistance and everything was no doubt fine, he had gotten into his work. He had actually gotten so engrossed in it that he hadn't realized the time had flown by until he looked up.
He had looked up because the door to his office had opened. He hadn't been expecting that, of course, because Margaret was supposed to tell him when people were coming to see him.
He kept trying to get the people of the town to make an appointment to see him, but they never did.
Also, when people let themselves in, Margaret was usually trailing behind them trying to get them to stop.
None of those things were happening, and to make matters more confusing, it was Sammy walking across the office to his desk.
Completely on his own.
"I... Sammy?" he cried jumping to his feet. He glanced to his watch to confirm that it was after school hours and it was. He then turned back to the door. "Where's Kelly? Is Margaret giving her a hard time?"
Margaret had been doing that a lot recently too. Kelly, who was the only one who really followed the whole set up appointments and had an existing on-going appointment on his calendar, was the only person Margaret actively screened.
Everyone else could get past her, but not Kelly. Margaret always stopped Kelly, even though she was the one person she shouldn't be stopping.
He really had to figure out why that was.
Sammy shook his head. "Naw, Kelly never came to pick me up. I thought she was here with you."
Franklin's eyes narrowed at that. Kelly hadn't come to get him? Really? That didn't sound like her.
"No, she's not with me, but I have a feeling I know where she is," he said. He rounded his desk and offered him a hand that he took right away. "How did you get past Margaret?"
"I don't think she saw me."
"Yeah?" Franklin said as he led Sammy down the stairs. "Too little to be seen over the desk, huh?"
"I am not! She was too busy reading."
Franklin glanced to Margaret who was, in fact, nose deep in a book. Yeah, that sounded just like her too. It was how everyone else normally got past her.
"I'm going out Margaret," he called and she dropped the book immediately. She attempted to stutter out something but he wasn't listening. "I'm going over to the Headless Horseman to get Kelly."
He heard the first of her protests, but he ignored them, and instead just walked out of the mansion with Sammy beside him.
As they walked, they talked. Sammy loved to chatter so Franklin listened to him recount his day all the way to the bookstore.
He let the boy go in first and then when he got in he looked around. It didn't look like Kelly had gotten distracted helping Stephanie shelve the books they had just gotten from the library. In fact, it didn't look like they were there at all.
It shouldn't have taken that long to get the books and come back. What was going on?
He called up for Mark and the man appeared from behind the cash, having apparently been behind there somewhere. Beside him, Sammy gasped, which was fair, it was really hard to magic a fake head onto Mark's shoulders, so he literally just went around headless.
"Hey, Stephanie and Kelly aren't back yet?"
Mark dinged his bell twice for no, which was how he communicated with most of the town, which was why talking to him required yes or no questions.
"Do you know what's taking them so long?"
He dinged twice again, and Franklin frowned. This was odd, really odd.
"Right, well, I have Sammy here, do you think I can leave him here while I go to the library to see what's up?"
That one got him a single ding for yes and Franklin nodded.
"If you want to talk to him, it has to be yes or no questions okay?" he asked and Sammy nodded.
"I already knew that. I'm friends with Mira and she told me about him," he said. "HI Mr. Callum!"
Mark waved and Sammy started taking his backpack off. "I'll be okay until you bring Kelly back," he said and Franklin smiled. He really was a good boy.
He left the bookshop, took four steps towards the library and Stephanie slid into view. She was huffing and puffing, having clearly ran the whole way there.
"Oh Franklin! There you are!" she cried. "I just went to the mansion looking for you!"
She had? Odd. Why had she done that?
"Where's Kelly?" he asked, because the fact that she wasn't with her was a problem.
"That's why I was looking for you. She tried to go up the steps and went through the floorboards."
"WHAT?!" he cried. "I thought you were going to warn her about that!"
"I did, she went anyway!"
He wanted to ask her why, but he had a feeling that only Kelly would know why she had done something as stupid as that.
"Do you need help pulling her up?"
"She didn't have the safety on her."
Of course she didn't. Franklin bit back the urge to curse to the heavens, he knew he shouldn't have let her go.
"Is she badly hurt?"
"I don't know. She sounded okay, but I'm going to need help getting her up, you know before..."
Franklin sighed to himself, yes, they would have to get her back topside before she attracted anything's attention.
"Alright, come on, let's go get her," he said and together the two ran back to the library.
