PART 6: Panic at the Library .4

Kelly wasn't sure how long she was really out for.

She was only aware of the pain and the darkness that was around the edges of her eyes that eventually took over.

When she did end up blinking her eyes clear of the pain, she found that maybe the darkness was more around her then just before her eyes.

The hole above her didn't look too small, despite the fact that she had just went through it. So she hadn't fallen that far, but it was definitely far enough to have taken the wind out of her lungs. And it was definitely too far out of her reach for her to pull herself out.

She had landed in the dirt too, so clearly this place had no foundation. It was just chilling above some kind of tunnel of sorts.

"Kelly?!"

Kelly forced herself to sit up, only because the sound of Stephanie's voice reminded her that she had been there with someone and she was probably very worried about her.

You know, because she had literally broken every rule Stephanie had given her.

"Yeah," Kelly said weakly. "I'm fine."

Except she wasn't sure if that was true. Her back hurt pretty bad, she was sure it wasn't broken though, because she could move. Or the adrenaline coursing through her was so strong that she was muscling through it.

She wiggled her toes, making sure that they were moving too, so nothing too painful there.

"Are you okay? Say something?!" Stephanie cried down to her.

"Yeah, I think so," Kelly called up to her, realizing that Kelly hadn't been able to hear her.

"Okay... okay... so don't panic..."

"I'm not."

Yeah, only because she'd hadn't really grasped that fact that she was stuck down there. It would hit her at some point, it just hadn't hit her yet.

"I... I'm going to have to go get help!" now that got Kelly's attention. "You just need to stay right there! Okay?!"

"Okay," she said carefully. "But who are you going to get to help? Not Franklin right?" Above her Stephanie was suspiciously quiet. "Please don't get Franklin. Get literally anyone else!"

"He's gonna find out either way, Kelly!"

"Well can he find out after I've been pulled out of the hole so I can play it out like it wasn't that big a deal?"

"This is a big deal!" Kelly cried. "I'm serious, Kelly. You better stay there, because if you get lost in the tunnels whatever you're worried Franklin will say is going to be worse!"

Kelly sighed. Jesus. This was one hell of a situation.

"Okay, okay, fine," she called up. "I'll stay put!"

"Good. I'll be right back."

Then she was gone, and Kelly was alone in the dark.

Kelly never really liked the dark.

She figured, if she stayed where the light was, everything would be okay. Just sit right there, by the opening, where the light was filtering downward, and not only would Franklin spot her right away, she wouldn't have to be too afraid of the dark.

But then... then she started noticing the sparkles.

Not black this time, but this sort of light tawny tan color. It was drifting through the air like a scent wafted. It was a literal trail leading away from her, where she saw other sparkle colors drifting as well.

They all seemed to have gone in the same direction.

Kelly forced herself to stand up. She leant against the nearest wall and just adjusted her body and the pain she was starting to feel more of. There was a dull radiating pain in her lower back and shoulder, which was probably not good. One leg had a bit of a dull throb too, starting in her ankle and moving up.

That probably wasn't good, but she figured, being slightly injured meant she couldn't get in too much trouble. Chances were, by the time she wandered away, Franklin would show up, and then he could help her look.

So she hobbled off towards the darkness, following the sparkles.

It didn't hurt that much to walk at first, but then the limp got worse. Yeah, she must have really hurt her leg after all.

Franklin really wasn't going to let this go. He was never going to trust her again, she was going to get lectured till the end of time.

She had literally proved him right.

She sighed to herself and pressed forward, all the sparkle colors were converging, as was another color... this bright green she had never seen before.

Also no one had that color. Yes Margaret had a green, but it was more like a vibrant snot green. She hadn't wanted to write that down in her pad but there was literally no other way to describe it except for maybe as a browner version of lettuce green.

She just had to hope that Margaret never asked her what her color was.

She was almost there, she could feel it, she was on the precipice of discovering several missing totems, she just knew it. But when she turned the corner she learned exactly why Stephanie hadn't wanted her wandering.

Kelly couldn't even run, her leg hurt too much, and it's longer bigger stride would have caught up with her in seconds.

So she could really only scream as it grabbedher.
