PART 3: Hunting Harpies .5
Kelly was quiet for most of the walk.
Franklin thought that maybe it was just because she was tired and in pain, but no, apparently Kelly was just preparing herself. For what you might ask. Well, she was working up the courage to ask him for something she never should have felt comfortable asking for.
"I wanted to ask you for a favour."
That was pretty brazen of her to just assume that he'd give her a favour after he just saved her life. He stopped walking and then turned towards her. He looked her up and down and then frowned at her.
"I just saved your life. It's not me who owes you."
"You shot me out of the sky when you didn't have to. Yeah you owe me." Franklin continued to glare at her and she sighed. "Can you just hear me out please?"
Franklin sighed well the least he could do is listen to her. "Go a head."
"Right, so uhm... while she had me, the Harpy kinda talked to me. She explained why she took me and... do you want to hear why? Cause like... it scared me, I feel like I might as well share the fear."
"Sure, why not?"
"She thinks we're dating."
If Franklin had been drinking he'd be doing a spit take. The Harpy thought... what?!
"Yeah," Kelly said taking in Franklin's shocked stare. "That was my reaction."
Well, for once they seemed to be on the same page.
"Her exact words were mate," she said. "Anyway, she specifically took me because she thought you'd trade with her to get me back."
"She thought I'd trade?"
"Yes, for her daughter," Kelly said with a nod. Wow, that... that was actually a smart move. He might not have done it to get Kelly back, but he would have let the Harpy think that to bring her back to him and then he'd've just shot her. "You didn't actually steal that Harpy's child, did you?"
Why did Franklin not want to admit that he had, in fact done that. Why did he have a feeling that it would make Kelly look at him differently? And why did he care if she looked at him differently?
"I had to."
Just as he thought she did look at him differently. No longer was it passive annoyance, now it was disgust. "I'm sorry, you stole a child?"
"The Harpy used to hunt us, constantly. We lost three villagers before we came up with the idea," he explained. "It's not like we're tormenting her daughter. She is very well taken care of. In fact, I hear Sammy is friends with her."
That seemed to surprise Kelly but only briefly. "You don't have kids, do you?" she asked with a narrowed gaze. Obviously not. "Course not, if you did then you'd know the most terrible thing is to have a child taken from you. It's every parent's nightmare."
Franklin's own eyes narrowed. It sounded like she was talking from experience. Had someone tried to take Sammy from her? Sammy wasn't her kid, but was that what she was running from? Someone taking Sammy from her?
"Honestly Kelly... I don't think you understand..."
"No, you don't understand," she snapped. "What you've done is kidnapping and if this were any other town you'd be arrested."
"Kelly..."
"Well, the good news is we can fix it," she said. "We can fix it, and stop her from trying to grab me again, cause she is 100 percent going to try it again if she doesn't get what she wants."
"She's wants her child," Franklin growled.
"Exactly!"
"We are not giving her back her child."
"What... but... why not?"
"Because us having her child, is the only reason she's not attacking the town daily."
"Well, us having her child, means she's going to be attacking me, every single day."
"Kelly, I appreciate that you're in danger, I do, but I can't put the rest of the town in danger just to take care of you. I just can't. Especially since she'll no doubt take her word back the second she gets her daughter."
"But Franklin..."
"No," he snapped. "Final answer, do not bring it up again."
He whirled around and stormed away clearly expecting her to follow him. "Fine then... tomorrow... tomorrow can you help me with the totems?" she asked she was huffing though clearly having to run to keep up with him. "And can we slow down please?"
Franklin immediately slowed and let Kelly catch her breath. He almost apologize but he was too angry to do that.
"Yes I can help you."
"I just... I'll need to know who's who and what's missing..."
"We'll we're not sure what's missing from each totem," he admitted. "I can tell you who's who though."
"Oh wonderful," she said with a smile. "And uhm... are they all missing pieces of jewelry?"
"I just said I don't know, Kelly," he barked and she frowned at him. She was right, he didn't need to be mean to her. "Look, everyone's unique, I'm going to assume that each totem is missing a unique piece, and we're pretty sure Lydia's camouflaged them."
"Right... she sounds like a snake and that's what snakes do."
"You haven't even met her," Franklin reminded her but she just rolled her eyes.
"Well, she sounds horrible," she said and he found himself smiling. "What did you even do to upset her?"
Franklin sighed. She hadn't heard the story yet, and he knew when she did hear it she was going to hate him even more. And tonight, after everything else, he didn't want her to know just how horrible he really was.
"I uh... I broke her heart."
That earned him a thoughtful hmm from her. "Wow, so she's one of those vindictive girls, right? Hell hath no fury like a woman scored, and all that?"
Yep that was Lydia to a tee.
After that the rest of the walk was quiet. He got her back to Granny's Bed and Breakfast and the second she got through the door she had a screaming boy sprinting towards her.
Sammy was supposed to be in bed but he had clearly not gone to bed. He had clearly stayed up to make sure that Franklin brought Kelly back like he promised.
Sammy hugged Kelly tightly and then he promptly let her go and rushed to Franklin. He grabbed Franklin's hand and tugged him down, the second he was down to Sammy's level the little boy hugged him.
Franklin was so rarely hugged, especially by the children cause they were terrified of him, that he had no idea what to do.
"Thank you," Sammy whispered. "Thank you for saving my sister."
Franklin pet his back awkwardly. "You're uh... you're welcome."
"Come on Sammy," Kelly said and the little boy let go and ran back to his sister, taking her offered hand. "Thanks for everything everyone but I'm really tired..."
"No problem love," Elouise called. "You simply call me if you need anything."
"See you guys in the morning," she called as she went up the steps with Sammy with in step beside her.
Franklin just stood there watching her as she disappeared. He was left wondering what excitement Kelly had in store for him tomorrow.
