Chapter 4

Everything hurt when she awoke. She was staring at an unfamiliar ceiling but after the year she had that wasn't that strange to her. She forced herself to sit up, looking around for Sammy, but instead she found the zombie. He was leaning against a grand desk, staring at her with those electric blue eyes, the red mask of sparkles still on his face.

"Tell me what you see," he ordered.

There was no apology, no mention of where her brother was, just a simple order, or well demand. Kelly glared at him.

"Where's Sammy?"

The zombie straightened. "Tell me what you see or you'll never see him again," he growled.

Kelly could feel the anger and fear taking over her. She glanced around and spotted a door. She glanced back at the zombie and wondered if she could out run him. She bolted for the door, but he proved to be faster.

She had the door open a crack but all it took was one of his large hands to slam the door shut again. He took a hold of her and pushed her against the door. "Tell me what you see," he ordered. His lips against her ear making her skin crawl.

Kelly turned and pushed him as hard as he could, but he didn't budge. She pounded her fists against him, but all it did was mildly annoy him. She brought out her claws, scratching at his face trying to claw that mask of sparkles right off. But he wasn't deterred he didn't even yelp.

He did however, continue to ask her to stop. She just wouldn't. So He let her assault him, getting more and more annoyed. He frantically tried to get a hold of her hands but when he couldn't he simply threw her again.

It wasn't as hard as the first time, but she still flew across the room. She landed first on the carpet and then she pulled herself up to his desk, before whirling around to face him. She was expecting him to have come at her while she was down but he had stayed by the door. As she stood there staring at him, her knuckles brushed up against something smooth and metallic. She didn't have to look to know what it was.

He was heading towards her, slowly, carefully. "Now I'm sorry. I didn't mean to... I mean... I forget my strength sometimes... I won't... if you stop, I won't do it again, okay?"

He was right in front of her now, he seemingly relaxed. Since she hadn't attacked him again and that was what she wanted. The element of surprise.

Kelly grasped the letter opener and plunged it, with all her strength, right into his heart. The zombie staggered back a bit. He stared first down to the knife buried hilt deep in his chest and then to her, shock covering his features like he couldn't believe this had just happened.

There was no pain on his face, and no blood leaking from him, in fact, he didn't look the knife had done any damage at all.

Kelly took her hand off of the hilt and straightened, wondering what he would do to her now. The rage had returned to his face and in one swift motion he had a hand to her neck and had her pinned against the desk top.

With his free hand he pulled the knife from his chest, the blade dripping black ooze. He held it poised above her head, his hand squeezed her neck. Kelly felt the hot tears leak from eyes, she couldn't die here, she needed to save Sammy.

The knife came crashing down, impaling in the wood beside her head and the zombie let her go. He took a few steps away from her and seemingly caught his breath. Kelly slid to the floor gasping herself, caressing the sore skin of her neck. She watched him through hooded eyelashes as he paced to the door and back trying to work up the nerve to say something to her.

"I... I'm not usually..." he started. He glanced down at her, their eyes met and he immediately put all the space he could between them. He pressed his back against the door and then just continued to stare at her as she stared at him.

He looked... he looked afraid.

"I just... I just wanted to talk to you but I've obviously gone about this the wrong way," he whispered. "I don't normally throw people around but you... you unnerve me..."

"I unnerve you?" she echoed. How could something that large and that terrifying be scared of her?

"I think you have a unique talent and I just want to know what you see when you look at me," he said.

"A monster," Kelly spat out. Hurt glimmered in those blue eyes for a moment and Kelly irrationally felt guilty for it. Though she didn't understand why she would. The man had practically attacked her... well after she had attacked him.

Why was she making up excuses for him?

"Yes, well, that is to be expected if you can see through my glimmer. But I want to know if you see something else," he replied, quickly masking his emotion in his eyes. When Kelly didn't respond he continued. "Your brother is safe, he's at the day care. If you answer my questions, I'll take you to him."

A little weight lifted from Kelly's chest hearing that Sammy was okay. Of course, the zombie could be lying to her, but if telling him what she could see would bring Sammy back to her, then that's what she would have to do.

"Sparkles," she replied, avoiding his eyes. "You're covered in sparkles."

"Sparkles?" he echoed. "That's it? You don't see... oh... a normal face?"

"Well, sort of. It's kind of like you're wearing a mask, a mask made out of red sparkles, but it's not opaque. I can see your real face underneath it," she said.

She felt odd telling him this, mainly because she had only ever told one person before and they had thought she was crazy. After that she stopped telling people the things she could see. She didn't know why it mattered, because this zombie was nothing more than a beast, but she didn't like the idea of him thinking she was out of her mind.

When she lifted her eyes to meet his she found that he was just staring at her with an impressed look about him. "That's very interesting, out of all the abilities she's gifted, that one seems the most useless."

She? Who the hell was this she? If he noticed that Kelly was confused, he didn't say anything.

"Your curse hasn't manifested yet either, has it?" he asked. Kelly stared at him. Curse? Oh god, no wonder he didn't think her sparkle story was crazy, the zombie was as mad as a hatter. "Odd, usually it has by now. Maybe she's cooking up something extra special for you."

Kelly cleared her throat to get him off of his tangent. "You said you'd take me to see my brother," she reminded him.

"Right, yes, the daycare. Fine, let's go," he said turning quickly and opening the door. Kelly sat there not wondering why this was happening, or how it was all possible. All that mattered was finding Sammy and getting as far away from this crazy place as possible.
