Chapter 9 ~ Little Finch

You strolled peacefully down the long dark corridor of a hallway, the doctor walking next to you, slightly in front of you really, as he was guiding the way. 529 padded contently beside the tow of you, the remains of a feather stuck with saliva to her small lip. "How long do we have to walk?" you pondered aloud. "Well, we dropped through about seven floors according to my calculations plus the one you came down in order to find me. So, all in all, about a month of walking." He said sternly. "W-What?!" your eyes widened, "My legs will have given out by then!" you exclaimed. "Don't worry, we still get to rest when we can find available shelter by nightfall." he replied cooly. "How do you know it's nighttime anyways?" you asked. "Instinctive, I suppose. Even if it was incorrect we would be able to get to sleep around the same times. Unless we can't find a place to stay overnight or we are too busy getting away from a fellow SCP." he told you responsively, as you thought about it, if you ran into another SCP that month could become longer, or possibly even shorten your time on Earth at all. "049..." you whispered. "Hmm?" he hummed with his stunning voice. You still hadn't gotten over it. "Im scared." you whimpered into the darkness of the hallway. As you walked Josie closed in on you and rubbed her head against your leg in attempt to comfort you.

The air was cold in the never-ending hallways. You brushed your fingertips across the wall as you strode alongside the other two SCPs. It was freezing. "Why is it so cold?" you asked, flinching away from the fortification, almost bumping into the doctor, practically running over the feline. She yelped when you accidentally stepped on her paw before Josie moved to the other side of 049. "Sorry." you whispered to her. "I don't feel cold." he replied. You shivered. His arm pulled around you. You wondered how, but he was still warm. "Where are we even going?"  you questioned. "To the other side of this floor, it may take a while, but it will lead us to an elevator." he said warily. "Are you sure?" you asked, if you found an elevator, why in the world would it take a month to get out? "More like a guess," he said, stepping through another door, "They could be run down or nonexistent. I presume that if there isn't an elevator there will be some form of transportation somewhere on this floor, we just may have to locate it." he said thoroughly and thoughtfully. "Theres no guarantee of escape is there?" you asked him, annoyance hinted in your voice. He laughed a little. "No, dear, there isn't, but perhaps we could at least try?" You weren't sure it was really a question, it just kind of sounded like one. You nodded with a small whimper. His arm coiled away from you, and you shivered once more. He glanced in your direction in a concerned manor. You looked back at him and shrugged, and the hallways never did end. The day went on forever. Another door opened, revealing a large open room. Desks accompanied by computers and multiple files lined the walls, hidden behind large glass walls that separated each distinctive office. "Where are we?" you asked. "Work space, if another elevator is located on this floor it would be in a compatible range of this area." the doctor replied, his voice still soothing you, it seemed to be the only thing keeping you sane. "Alright, lets get going then!" you said, jumping a little from the hype, if you found an elevator you'd be able to escape within weeks. Possibly days! You continued with the other two SCPs throughout some more hallways and small rooms leading off into three more hallways. You kept seeing these dark holes that seemed to pull at all matter. Every time you asked 049 about them he'd cringe in response and tell you 'It's nothing.' when it was quite obviously something. You decided to skip over it next you saw it. "Hey doctor," you asked, he hummed in response. "Why do you always wear the mask?" you asked as you carefully stepped around another dead corpse. You'd seen too many for them to really surprise you any more. "Well, its a common motivation to keep a secret from the rest of the society, especially when they so desperately want to know everything about ones being. To pull them into such foolery is also quite something to watch." you could hear the smirk in your voice. "Interesting." you commented. "Interesting indeed." he said in a distinctive tone. You continued to walk through the cold. "Can I try it on?" you asked him with a smile. "Well..." he thought a moment, slowing to a stop, "I don't see why not." he said with a shrug as he pulled his mask off and handed it to you. You let out a small squeal of excitement. You pulled the mask on. It smelled sweet. You remembered that from somewhere, like plague doctors would put things with sweet fragrances in the beaks of their masks because they believed bad smells induced disease. What a funny thought. "Greetings, I am the plague doctor!" you said, imitating his voice as best you could. He laughed a little. "Kaw!" you squawked. "Ah, so now your a bird?" he asked with a smirk. It was so nice to actually see his face. He was, regrettably, cute. You nodded as you pulled your arms up like wings and tweeted again. "I guess that makes you my little finch." he said, reaching forward and ruffling your hair. You blushed intensively. 'Does he know what that means?' you wondered flustered. "D-doctor-" you muttered. "Yes, dear?" he asked. You pulled off the mask and handed it back to him. "Oh my, are you sick? Your face is red." he exclaimed. Oh dear. "Do you know what that phrase means?" you asked. "What?" he tilted his head as he placed his mask back onto his face. "Little finch." you responded, feeling your cheeks heat up just by saying it. "Oh." he was silent a minute, "Sort of." he says. "Okay, what does that mean then?" you asked. "That I like you?" you started blushing deeply again "As a friend I mean." he said in a rush, had he noticed that bothered you? Josie mewed in the middle of the conversation, it went unnoticed though. "No, doctor...." you muttered embarrassed and flustered. "Thats a sexual term. An old, uncommon one, but still." You winced. "Oh dear, I'm dreadfully sorry, I didn't mean to, I didn't know, I swear!" he panicked. You coiled your hands around him. "Its okay." you pulled him into a forgiving hug. He slowly accepted it. Life was getting just a bit too weird for you, this certainly was not okay to anyone else, so why you? "Sorry." he whispered once more. "Its fine." you whispered back. You heard him snicker. "Alright, little finch." he said with a smirk. "Hey," you pulled away, "don't get cocky." you said pointing at him like a teacher would a student. "Yes ma'am." he replied like a blank slate. "Don't do that either makes me feel weird." you said a bit stingy as you proceeded to continue walking. He and Josie followed as you paced around the frigid rooms and hallways.

You stared up at at the faulty elevator. It did look a little broken down. "Is it safe?" you asked warily. "Should be alright. Is it not a significant form of travel?" he answered your question with a question. You nodded nervously. You stepped on and the elevator creaked. Josie nervously boarded it with you. The doctor just stared a minute. It cracked before it began to descend at a fast pace. You and the half cat hopped off before it fell a few feet. You looked back at the condemned elevator. "I imagined it would be broken down." he chimed. You hit him in the arm, "You lied! You could have just gotten me killed!!!" you exclaimed. He snickered in response. "Why dear, it was a mere test." he said in a compelling manor. "Test? So you were risking my life!" you scolded him. "No, I was fully aware that you were capable of removing yourself from the elevator. It's just the fact I probably weigh much more than you and the cat." he chortled once more. You squinted your eyes as you thought that one over, but as you did you realized that he was 95.3 kg. How many pounds was that? About 200? Than you began to wonder why you would remember something so useless. "True." you concluded, glancing back. "How will we get out now?" you questioned, "Will it take longer than calculated?" you asked. "No, my calculation was based off travel without elevator I was expecting them to be down in the first place, my sweet." whoah. Okay, dear was alright, acceptable, but now your sweet? His sweet? That bothered you, even if it was just the slightest. He may have been the only one you could really talk to, perhaps the only person ever, but it was taking you a hot minute to accept that. It was taking you a while to accept him.

You sighed, the blush was probably present on your face, you were quite flustered.  "Well, where do we head now?" you looked up at him, concern vivid in your eyes. "I..." he thought a moment, "I don't know." he glanced back at you, you swore he was just as concerned. "Well....what do we do?" you asked him. "We settle." he said. 'Please tell me he doesn't mean settle as in.....family settle.' you panicked, you could feel your ears burning. "For the night, of course." he added quickly, was it that noticeable? You nodded. His hand reached for yours, and being too caught up in the situation, you allowed it. His fingers intertwined with yours and you didn't notice until Josie started up purring. You blushed furiously, but you couldn't allow the doctor to find that out, so you did the best of your ability to keep it under control, and as far as you were concerned, it worked. He guided you through another set of doors until he approached another corridor. You allowed him to pull the clearance card out of your pocket, and your stomach got all tickly due to his hand being so close to...well...areas. He swiped it across the clearance pad, his hand still locked with yours. The door shifted open, another small office, belonging to another individual, but you missed the panel to tell who it belonged. In the room was of course a desk, a small desk lamp, more file cabinets, and a couch.  It was a small couch, space for about three people. It was tattered and worn, but still comfortable looking. He directed you over to the couch and let go of your hand. You blinked a few times before he nudged his head at the furniture and you sat down on it. "Its about time to go to sleep, don't you think?" he asked, his head tilting slightly. "I really don't, I barely have an internal clock." you responded with a bleak smile. He merely laughed. "Well, its about time you get some rest, listen, we have had quite an adventure so far and-" you decided to interrupt "Well I got plenty of sleep in the elevator." you argued. "Oh come on, dear. Get some sleep. You need it, in fact, you deserve it!" he chimed. You sighed. You leaned your head back against the cushion of the couch with a small groan. "Your doing it incorrectly." you could hear the smile in his voice. "Hmm?" you hummed. But before you could even think the doctor swept you up in his arms. "D-doctor!" you squirmed a little. He laughed. "Calm down." he said, his voice compelling, soothing. You cleared your throat after you stopped moving so desperately to get out of his grasp. You looked up at him, your hands clutching fist fulls of fabric from your shirt. He laid you gently down on the couch, your head perched up on the arm and your legs sprawled out to where your toes skimmed the other. You looked at him a little worried. "What about you?" you asked him politely. "Im fine dear, remember? I don't even need sleep." He reminded you. You nodded with a yawn. He laughed a bit before sitting down next to the couch, leaning against it, his head touching just under your knee. Most of you still didn't quite trust him, didn't feel anything towards him, and another part of you wanted him so badly. That part wasn't big enough to make a difference though. Maybe it was normal? You eyes began to grow heavy, and the cat jumped up and curled into your lap. Then you fell asleep, falling helpless to the abyss.
