Chapter 5 ~ Voices

"So....where to?" you asked, anticipating his answer, your voice echoing through the endless tunnels that still kind of represented the maintenance tunnels, you knew well enough they weren't though.

"Well to start we need to arrive back up on the higher floors of the facility." he chimed in response, his voice still a melody you'd probably never get over. It was like a favorite song that you just couldn't seem to wear out by listening repetitively. Even though that usually worked.

You sighed with a nod, "Lead the way, Doctor." you said extremely unenthusiastically. While you were happy and all to finally get out of this hell hole, you took into consideration the effort that was going to go into escaping. Were you up for the mission? Not really.

"You remember where the elevator is, correct?" he asked, facing you.

"Um..." nope nothing, you completely forgot the way back, you had put your trust in 049 to get out of this place, not your horrible memory. "No, I'm sorry," you said guiltily.

"That's okay, it just might take longer to find it again to make our exit," he said conclusively, already walking towards the doors of his containment cell, you followed eagerly behind.

You wondered if he was deciding his path carefully. He kind of looked at each way before just turning but he didn't really seem to have a tactic of decision or anything. I mean sure, he was older and probably more sophisticated than you, or at least that's what you thought. Could just be wishful thinking.

"Hey how old are you?" you asked as you walked, your footsteps loud clacks that followed each other in sync.

"Hmm, well I suppose that's classified, now isn't it?" he asked, almost mockingly.

"Well sure, it's not in the files but we are acquaintances, right?" you asked, he nodded after a moment of thinking in response.

"Tell me your age first." he inquired.

"Alright. I'm 19," you said responsively.

"Hmm..." he hummed, stopping once more to look down two long consistent hallways.

        "So, your age?" you asked.

"Technically speaking I'm 23, that's when I stopped aging anyways, I have been around for millenniums," he stated, taking another turn, you followed closely behind him.

Your eyes kinda widened at that fact, he wasn't really much older than you, technically speaking. You'd always wanted a boyfriend older than you but still sorta in your age group. Too bad the doctor didn't qualify, he wasn't even human. Whatever the hell he was.

Something scurried around in the distance, hidden away in the shadows. Instinctively, you jumped behind SCP-049, pulling your hands up to your chin. The doctor stopped and turned his head slightly to see you curled up behind him.

He sighed before looking forwards. "Don't worry," he said, his voice was so soothing. He kneeled down and put his hand out like he was beckoning something to come forward.

"Don't bring it over here!" you squealed, backing up a bit and staring into the darkness. You heard something walk forward slightly.

"It's okay, come here." 049 chimed. Eventually, you spotted a small pair of eyes in the shadows, just on the edge of the darkness. You held your breath. You calmed down immediately when you saw what was really there. A small gray tabby cat made its way half out of the shadows, it was so dark you couldn't even see the other half!

"Aww! Kitty!" you exclaimed. "I love cats!" you kneeled down next to 049 and beckoned the cat with him. The cat walked the rest of the way out but to your dismay, it had no 'other half'. You jumped up and squealed, the cat's hair stood up on end in response.

"Calm down, Josie isn't dangerous," he said unperturbed.

"You gave it a name?" you said, looking at him like he was a madman.

"No, the scientists and researchers did. Would you rather me call it SCP-529?" he asked teasingly.

"No, I suppose not." you returned. The cat approached the two of you, it raised its head to meet the doctor's hand and he pet her in reply. She, well you couldn't really identify a gender, but they seemed to place it as a female, purred and purred. She brushed up against 049 like she knew him from somewhere. As she turned you realized where she halted off wasn't quite guts and gore, it was just a black void. A never-ending abyss. You gasped slightly.

"Can we....keep her?" you asked, it seemed like an out of place question, like a wife asking a husband if a pet would be okay in a household. You thought about rephrasing the question.

"Well, I don't see why not." He responded with a shrug. 'Well alright then.' you thought to yourself.  "I mean of course that's just another specimen to watch over and make sure doesn't die in the whole escaping operation." he looked down at the feline. You walked over slowly and landed your hand to the cat. She sniffed a moment before rubbing against your palm, so you proceeded to pet her.

"How do you know its a she?" you asked curiously.

        "DNA tests," he responded.

You nodded. "Well, we best be moving along then."

Thank goodness you didn't run into any more objects and entities roaming around the lower levels except a cute little half cat. The doctor kept referring to some that sounded really scary. You hated the sound of SCP-939. SCP-999 sounded pretty nice though, especially considering it could roam freely around the facility if it wanted. The small cat padded alongside the two of you as you walked through the dimly lit hallways and corridors in search for the elevator.

"Aha!" you exclaimed, stopping at the entrance to the elevator, "I found it!" you said, hands on hips as you turned to face the other two.

"We found it." the doctor corrected you.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," you said mockingly as you turned back to get on the elevator. "Well c'mon then," you said, stepping inside the tight space, SCP-049 followed behind you. You were about to press the button when you noticed Josie hadn't boarded the mechanical form of transportation.

"Aww, come on kitty kitty kitty!" you called the feline in a bit of a shushed manor. You jerked your head toward the doctor. "She isn't getting on." you vociferated.

He sighed, "Don't be so impatient dear." He knelt down and extended his hand. "Over here, Josie." he clucked his tongue a few times. You sat there and stared as the cat seemed to cower at the thought of getting onto the elevator like she knew something would happen if she did. The cat looked up, not really at the ceiling but more intently at where the wires on the elevator trailed off into the the atmosphere she couldn't quite see. She seemed to trace where the cabled were located and follow them up the building before looking back at the two of us, being idiots as we tried to lure half of a cat into an elevator. The doctor sighed.

"Fine, you greedy pest." He said to the small feline as he reached into his cloak and pulled out a treat. He held it to the cat. He immediately got Josie's attention and she came strutting over.

"Where did you even get that?" you asked in an odd tone.

"Well, this isn't the first time we have had a containment breach, not the first time for me to meet this stubborn cat either." He said, running his fingers through her fur. The elevator closed shut with a droning noise behind  the grey grimalkin. Once the kitty was done eating the small treat she looked up at the walls of the elevator. You reached for the button in which dragged the elevator into motion when the cat let out a hiss. Josie arched her back as she watched the ceiling. You looked at 049. He shrugged, and you shrugged in return as you pressed the button, triggering movement in the metal ascender. The elevator shook a moment and the cat let out another long screech. You looked up at the ceiling and so did the doctor, the cats hairs stayed up on end as the elevator rumbled to life once more, pulling the elevator upwards. Within three seconds you heard an eerie noise as the elevator stopped, the cables made a loud metal clashing noise and the cats scream made its way around the noises. The lights flickered twice before one cable gave out and the elevator went clashing down through who knows how many lower floors. You screamed with the cat but 049 seemed to stay pretty calm. He reached his hand over to the bars lined up on the walls for situations like this and his hand coiled around it. You clung onto him, still squealing, and he pulled his arm around you. The elevator stopped abruptly with a loud banging noise and the elevator tilted forward with one swift movement, sending all three of you onto the floor.

You silenced your screams and finally opened your eyes. SCP-049 had landed right on top of you, and now you were both just kind of staring at each other awkwardly. You blushed and bit your lip, clearly uncomfortable, he didn't seem to notice.

"Um..." you tried to move, "Doctor?" you said embarrassed.

"Hmm?" he asked cluelessly, "oh...OH!" he pushed himself off you immediately. "I-I'm so dreadfully sorry, it's just the accident, I was all hazy, that was uncalled for, I'm so so so so so sorry dear!" he said flustered. You giggled slightly. Josie stood little ways before you, closer to the door which was tilted away from you. You leaned halfway against the floor and halfway against the wall. You shot a look at 049, he was still embarrassed about what happened. He had his legs curled up against his chest and had his arms wrapped around them basically to hold them there. You looked back at Josie. She mewed repeatedly at the door, which had a small crack of an opening. You pulled yourself up with a 'hmph'.

You crawled up with the cat, slipping at one point.

        "Oh dear." 049 muttered.

        "What?" you asked responsively.

"Are you okay?" he asked in return to your question.

"Yeah, why?" you asked once more. He pointed at your side. You looked down, blood-stained your shirt, but you couldn't check to see what was wrong, it was a tad too far up on your body, you didn't want the doctor to see anything he shouldn't. "Uhhhh," you looked at yourself with a bit of a horrified expression on your face, "Hold on," you said unsurely. You pulled your arms in your shirt and out of your sleeves before popping your head inside too. You looked down at your side, yep, you had a gash, but it was fine. You pulled everything back trough the shirt.

"Alright?" he asked once more. You shook your head 'no'.

"What do you need? I can help with your wounds if you request it?" he offered.

"I-" you cleared your throat, "I'm fine, really, I'll make it," you said with a bleak smile before getting back to the door. The half feline stared at you, then the door, then she mewed once more.

You wrapped your hands around the edge of the slightly opened doors and pulled yourself up to them. You secured your feet at the base of the door. "Catch me if I fall," you said, turning your head to the SCP behind you. He nodded. While it probably wasn't even two feet of falling, you didn't want to get hurt any more than you already were. You pulled with all your strength to open the door. It creaked open once, but it wasn't much though. The cat pawed up there with you and squeezed her way out.

"W-wait!" you called, pulling your hand through. There was another long white tiled hallway outside, with one light that flickered eerily. Josie walked away a little before turning and meowing at you.

"Help me out would ya?" you said stubbornly to the useless entity behind you.

"Oh yes," he said, getting up and crawling next to you. You let go of the door and, maintaining your balance, slid down into the crumbled corner of the elevator. He put his hands on the door and pushed it open. Each time it yanked open another inch, a small cloud of dirt would uprise. Eventually, it was open enough for him to get through, he jumped off into the dark hallway. You struggled back up, almost falling but gripping the edge of the elevator. You tried to pull yourself up, 'how in the world did they get up through here? It's so steep!' you yelled self-consciously. Another hand grabbed yours and pulled you through.

"Thanks," you said with a sigh as you brushed yourself off.

"No thanks needed," he said it like he didn't care for you like you just served him some sort of purpose, it made you mad feeling like he was using you.

"What does that mean?" you asked, stiffening slightly.

"Oh, nothing, it's just I can't really get out of here alone," he said, brushing himself off too. So you were serving him a dumb purpose.

"S-so you don't care about me?" you asked, bundling your fists together.

"Well, of course, I care for you, if I didn't I won't be able to escape this place. Of course, your just helping me out, in favor, I won't kill you, you'll earn your freedom, and when we're out of this hell hole, we can part ways and pretend the other never existed. You'll pretend you never saw any of this." he couldn't be serious.

"Well....well fine then!" you said, starting to leave. Josie stood in the middle of you and him, deciding who she should stay with. "C'mon Josie!" you said, stopping a moment. She looked at you, then glanced over at the doctor. She shot a look at you, mewed, and ran over to him.

"Of course, all you SCPs are just stubborn!" You yelled. "You SCPs can never be trusted," you felt your eyes get a little watery as you remembered the things you'd said to that stupid SCP, "I hate you 049! Do you hear me? HATE! I...." you trailed off, wiping away a tear, "I'll find more people on this abandoned planet." you said quietly.

That must have really hurt him cause his posture changed drastically. He sorta jumped a little and stiffened. "(Y/n), I-"

You cut him off "I don't want to hear it." You said, continuing down the hallway.

"Fine." you heard him mumble, "we don't need her anyways." he was talking to the feline.

"Who's there?" a male voice called, his words echoing through the hallway. You gasped, 'another human being.' you lightened up, looking down into the dark hallway that turned away from 049 and 529.

        "H-hello?!" you called.

049 looked up as he heard the male voice too. "Wait, (Y/n)!" he started running towards you. You stuck your tongue out at him.

"Show yourself!" the voice called again. The half cat raced after you with 049.

"(Y/n) please!" he called after you. You ran off into the darkness. You ran far away from where that idiotic doctor was. You pulled yourself into a dark room, dimly lit by another red tinted light.

"Hello?" You called out, but your words were devoured by the darkness.

        "Hello." the voice called back.

"Oh thank gosh, where are you?" you asked, looking around into the nothingness.

"To think, today of all days." the voice said.

"Hmm?" you hummed. Something walked around you.

The voice sighed, "I hope the others are alright." he said.

"What? Oh yeah, I haven't seen anyone else, actually." You told him. His footsteps sounded so....big. It seemed like claws hit the floor with clacks, sometimes twice at a time. Maybe he was pacing.

"What the hell are you?" he stopped, his voice terrified.

"Im...I'm human!" you said, almost offended.

"(Y/n)!" his voice was faint, it annoyed you.

        "That's nothing," you said.

"Huh, maybe I'm just hearing things," he responded.

"You're so weird," you said with a laugh. "Now, can I see you?" you asked the darkness.

You got your wish, but you wished you hadn't. The red beasts muzzle appeared from the darkness, long needle-like teeth, blood stained and all seemed to smile back at you.

"Hello?" it asked before he attacked you, and the last thing you saw was 049 as he dashed in and looked at you fear stricken.

"(Y/n)!" he yelled, but to no extent as you drifted into unconsciousness.
