Chapter 19 ~ Into Paradise
You stared up at the chalky writing quietly, your mouth left open in the slightest as you caught your breath. The doctor hooked his arm with yours, pulling you to the side, guiding you into an elevator you hadn't noticed before, quickly closing the door, tapping his foot as the elevator reeled into motion. You clung to him tighter in fear that the elevator may drop; just as it had near the beginning of this disastrous journey, looking at the floor quietly. Your heart rate picked up, but as you looked up into the doctor's eyes, you soothed yourself, taking deep breathes in order to calm down.
"We're going to make it. Don't worry," he spoke clearly, his voice just as gentle and soft as it had always been. You looked at him in silence, feeling calmed by his velvet soft tone. The doors of the elevator shifted open, revealing a large, white room. The roof caved upward into a glass sphere allowing the sun's beams to shine through onto you.
You felt the need to cover your eyes, as you hadn't seen the light of day in what felt like years. He looked up to the glass panes, and you could tell something sparked within him; a certain determination and hope.
Metal fences lined the side of the pathway to the open gates, leading to a lower area of the room. Another hallway led opposite of the outside world deeper into the facility. You looked back to it, almost as a way of saying goodbye to the hellish building, before looking forward once more. He held your wrist in his hand, almost tightly, making it beyond obvious he didn't want to lose you now that you've gotten so close. It was odd to think that after everything, the torture was finally coming to a conclusion and that freedom was only a few steps away. It was almost doubtful, in a sense, that it was going to be that easy.
The doctor started toward the entrance of escape, but as you approached, you could see all the security swarming the area. He stopped in his steps, hesitating, turning to the stairwell down to the lower area. A sinking feeling began in the pit of your stomach as you saw the patchy black substance form on the floor. In the panic, you quickly clung to the doctor's arm, rather tightly, moving behind him slightly in the process. He stared in as just much awe as a familiar face arose from the growing hole in the floor, consuming the foundation around it. The one the doctor had called 106. He grinned at you with his soppy, ruined smile, his flesh hanging in deterioration.
You covered your mouth a little bit, watching him as he started toward you. The Doctor hadn't even flinched, he just stared, as if he knew his every move before he made it. The old corpse of an SCP continued toward you, his footsteps leaving a gushy, black footprint marked on the floor. Just as you thought he was becoming too close, he turned and started out of the gate, his old decrepit figure inching across slowly. The Doctor followed behind him just as slow, watching his step, seeming to keep himself from walking in his footsteps, so you avoided it just the same.
The walls around you eventually came to a halt and the outside world was bestowed upon your eyes, the light was almost overwhelming. Clouds marked the sky in splotchy grey blobs, hinting it could rain soon. As you looked up at them, you noticed a helicopter circling around them, the distant noise becoming obvious now that you laid your eyes upon it. Sentenials held their positions across a large bridgeway, aiming directly at the SCP before you. An extremely large gun pointed at him from the roof, looking almost like a satellite, following his every move.
The Doctor continued to inch forward with the old man but stopped near the wall, staring, pulling you behind him a little bit. You were confused with this for a moment, looking up at him quietly, then back to 106, knitting your eyebrows together in confusion.
Just as you were beginning to think that the deteriorating figure would make it across, there was a blazing crash that came from the gun atop the roof. The flash was brighter than anything you'd seen; it amounted to the sun above you; sudden, and piercing your ears unlike any other noise you'd heard back in that damned facility. You covered your face in the Doctors shoulder, shutting your eyes tightly. He quickly moved you around him and pulled you alongside him. The flames were still blazing over the black figure across the bridge. He folded his hands over his head and crouched in agony, letting out a gargled, ear piercing shriek. Your eyes widened as the guards targeted the already dying being.
The Doctor pulled you toward the watchtowers and took a sharp turn down another stairwell around the metal fencing that guarded off the steep ledge. he ushered you down to the lower area of the foundation until you were met with a road, leading from a large metal door. You could only imagine what military vessels could come crashing through. Once you were to the bottom, you could see the helicopter wavering through the foggy sky. You could feel your legs getting weak in fear you weren't going to make it.
Once you were on the ground once more, he turned into a small room, pressing his hand firmly against the panel to open it. The rusted door shifted open, revealing what looked similar to a sewage pipe. The walls lining it were dark and musty, having cracks that led deep into the foundation. You cringed as you stepped in, your feet becoming wet with whatever substance had built up in the drainpipe. He led you through, guiding you deeper and deeper in. The air grew thick and smelled horrible, but you ignored it.
Eventually, It became extremely dark as you went, but you kept treading through. It felt like you travelled through the dark, musty area for ages, but then it got brighter. And brighter. You could see light at the end of the tunnel, and it was all the relief you needed. As you neared, the air became cleaner and fresh. Fresher than you'd have ever known. You broke through the barrier of light and stepped foot in a brand new world. One you deemed unfamiliar and new, but extraordinary and beautiful. It was green. And blue. And oddly perplexed. You gazed upon the area in near disbelief, looking at the Doctor, your mouth dropped wide. He looked back to you and smiled, taking your hand gently in his, leading you away from the unforgiving walls of the facility, and into what could have easily been named paradise.
(A/N: Late Merry Christmas!! I hope the wait was worth it! I'm incredibly sorry that I haven't written a proper chapter in near months- and that this chapter may be rather disoriented due to the fact I'm a bit rusty, now. I'll try my hardest to get the last chapter out, though. Perhaps after chapter 20 we'll gain a sequel? Thanks for sticking around, my fantabulous readers ^^ until next time!
