61. Brother To Brother
Jungkook could never remember a time in his entire life when frozen pizza had tasted so good. Even with the crust slightly burnt, he ate it and did so happily. The dinner table was a bit crowded with him and Taehyung staying over. There was the occasional bump of elbows against each other because of this, but nobody seemed to mind. What Jungkook also liked about this atmosphere was that it seemed to be a never-ending source of laughter. The only other time that Jungkook had remembered hearing laughter so much was when he was with Taehyung and the rest of the boys. Being cursed had been the only time that Jungkook realized that he had ever felt joy. What had happened to him might be more of a blessing than a curse after all. After they finished eating, he and Taehyung moved to help clean up before Taehyung was pulled by the arm towards the living room by Nabi.
"Play a game with me!" she squealed, tugging him along; Bam barking at her heels. Bam was practically this girl's shadow.
Taehyung looked to Jungkook for help, but Jungkook just chuckled and shook his head. Jungkook jerked his head behind him to indicate he was going outside. There was a back porch on the house with steps that led down to the green grass of the lawn that was turning more and more of an emerald shade as the night started to arrive; stars winking into view overhead. Jungkook slipped out the screen door and took a seat on the steps, looking upwards at the night. As he sat there, he heard the screen door open and slap shut before someone came to sit down beside him.
"I feel I should apologize for almost assaulting you on the front porch," said Junghyun.
"You don't need to. You were protecting your family as the man of the house," he said. "No apology needed."
Junghyun let out a soft grunt as a form of acknowledgement as he too moved his eyes to look upwards at the sky.
"You're right. I am the man of the house. I was made the man of the house when I was almost eighteen," said Junghyun. "I was given enough time to enjoy my childhood, but...I feel like I have a lot more responsibility now than I did before. After my father passed away, I felt obligated to stay and put my life on hold. I felt guilty about leaving for the longest time. I think it's why I come back to visit so often. I want to make sure my mom and Nabi are cared for. They are the most important people in the world to me."
Junghyun paused as he brought his eyes down from the sky to look over at Jungkook again.
"You and your friend...what do you need from my mom?"
Jungkook pulled his eyes away from the sky and looked over at Junghyun until their eyes locked. He could sense that the other was worried. He could see the beads of fear in Junghyun's eyes as numerous as the stars above them.
"You were listening," said Jungkook.
Junghyun nodded.
"I tried to eavesdrop outside the office, but I could only pick up snatches. I'd like to know though."
Jungkook thought about it for a moment, wondering how much of the truth to tell the other.
"Your mother knew my father," Jungkook finally said, "And my father...he isn't a very loving man though he should be since others see him that way."
"So your father is two faced," said Junghyun, deciding not to mince words. The bluntness of what the other said made Jungkook laugh.
"Yes, I suppose you can say that," said Jungkook. "He's very two faced. He doesn't like that I fell in love and wants to keep us apart. Your mother was the only one that has seemed to ever get to him. Taehyung and I were hoping that she could help us out."
"Why can't you just try talking to your father?" asked Junghyun.
"He cursed me," said Jungkook.
"Foul language isn't abnormal," said Junghyun. "It shouldn't make you afraid of talking to him."
"It's not the kind of cursing you think," said Jungkook a bit softer. Junghyun picked it up though; his eyebrows furrowing.
"What are you talking about? Is your father some sort of warlock?"
Jungkook sighed, folding his hands into his lap. He found himself wishing that Taehyung were here right then. Taehyung had the right words. Taehyung would know how to navigate this. As Jungkook stared down at his hands, he saw Junghyun's hand reach out to cover his hands.
"You can trust me," said Junghyun. "Think of me like your brother. I mean, if it's true that your father and my mother were once in love, we might have been if things were different."
Jungkook was silent for a moment before he untwisted his own hands from on top of one another, moving to grasp Junghyun's hand as it still rested on top of his own. Jungkook turned his face towards Junghyun to smile softly.
"No more pushing me against posts then?" asked Jungkook as Junghyun chuckled.
"I said sorry about that," said Junghyun as Jungkook chuckled in return.
As the chuckling died away, Jungkook still held to Junghyun's hand as he tried to collect his thoughts.
"My father is Cupid."
"Cupid? You mean the guy that shoots people with love arrows?"
"More like snaps love magic their way," said Jungkook. "I had the power once too as his son. Taehyung used to be my chaperone, making sure that I didn't get into trouble. Before that Taehyung used to shadow my father to watch him work his magic every year over the centuries."
Jungkook watched Junghyun try to take it all in; the shock visible on his face.
"You're joking with me right now," said Junghyun.
"I wish I were," said Jungkook, "But I'm not."
"Alright. So...alright, I'll trust you...even though that seems so unbelievable...but alright. So Cupid is your father...lets move on. What's this curse part you were mentioning?"
"I fell in love right before I was set to take my father's place. I refused to give her up, so he cursed me. Taehyung stood by my side so he cursed him too," explained Jungkook. "Then I find out tonight the reason my father created me was so he could come back to be with your mom."
"That's...insane..." said Junghyun as he struggled to grasp the right wording.
"Insane is one way to put it," said Jungkook. "I finally remembered the woman I fell in love with. Taehyung and I both just got our memories back. We're hoping your mother can talk my father down before he does anything else."
"Just...don't let him hurt her," said Junghyun. "Promise me."
"I promise you. I will protect her," said Jungkook.
"Brother to brother you promise me?"
Jungkook smiled a bit at the rewording and nodded.
"Brother to brother."
Before either of them could enjoy the moment any further, they heard Bam barking from inside the house followed by the rush of footsteps. Both of them turned to see the screen door slam open. Nabi was standing there looking terrified.
"Come quick!" she said. "Something's wrong!"
They both jumped to their feet, rushing into the house on each other's heels as they followed Nabi and Bam into the living room. Haneul was currently kneeling on the floor next to Taehyung who was currently lying curled on his side. Jungkook made his way past Junghyun to drop down on the floor in front of him to see that the other was currently writhing in pain.
"Tae!" said Jungkook, shaking him.
Taehyung opened his eyes to look at Jungkook. Taehyung opened his mouth to try to say something, but instead of words coming out another groan of pain was produced. Taehyung twisted in his spot on his side, practically curling in on himself. As Jungkook knelt there, he noticed a strip of white seem to suddenly race through Taehyung's dark hair as his pain continued.
"Your f-f-father..." Taehyung finally managed to get out as he looked at Jungkook. "He's caugh-ht-t us..."
