59. How I Met Your Father
After the awkward encounter on the porch, the three of them entered the house. There wasn't much to the small place. It was a simple two story house. After entering through the front door, they walked down the narrow hallway and past the living room off to the left. The kitchen laid to the rear of the house. Haneul made her way towards the kitchen and then turned off at the last second to enter a small study. After ushering them both inside, she moved to shut the door. Taehyung and Jungkook took in the office. Taehyung noticed the small fireplace in the office and the framed photos that adorned it. He moved to pick up a framed photo of Haneul with a younger Junghyun and Nabi. There was a man in the photo too who had his arm draped about Haneul's shoulders; a wide smile painted across his face.
"I see you are looking at a family photo," said Haneul as she took a seat in a reading chair by a picture window. The window overlooked the side yard where one could clearly see the empty bench swing rock back and forth in the breeze.
"Sorry," said Taehyung as he put the photo back. "I assume that is your husband in the photo. That is Kujo, right?"
"You're right. That is Kujo, and yes, he was my husband."
Was. Taehyung's cheeks tinted red as he moved to go and sit down in a chair. He grabbed Jungkook's arm and made him sit in the chair beside him.
"I'm sorry for your loss," said Taehyung. "I didn't know."
Haneul nodded with a tight smile upon her face.
"It's alright. I know. It happened about five or six years ago now," she said. "The pain is still fresh at times though."
Her eyes moved to look at Jungkook sitting in the chair, going silent again. Taehyung decided to speak up and fill in the void.
"I am sorry that it took me so long to remember you," said Taehyung.
"I assumed he would make you forget me, so it didn't come as a surprise that you haven't come in so long. You both being here now is certainly a surprise however."
"I didn't forget you until what happened lately. I just was unable to visit previous to that because I was made to watch this one over here grow up," said Taehyung as he nodded his head towards Jungkook.
Jungkook's mind was all over the place. He kept flitting his eyes about the office they now found themselves in while his mind hummed with a thousand questions. The way that Taehyung and Haneul were talking made it seem like they knew each other.
"You haven't changed at all," said Haneul. "You still look the same as you did all those years ago."
"Come now, it wasn't that long ago," said Taehyung. "You're still looking good yourself."
"You knew my father," said Jungkook suddenly then, focusing his eyes on the both of them as he interrupted their conversation, "I want to know how."
Haneul turned to look at Jungkook then. He could see some sort of sadness dwelling in her eyes just underneath the surface. It was as if looking at him caused her pain. Haneul sat in silence for a moment before she started to speak.
"It all happened on Valentine's Day when I was twenty-five years old. My family had been trying to - for the last several months - get things arranged so that I would marry a man from my younger years named Kujo. He was a lovely man, and I didn't have anything against him. I just wasn't in love with him. My parents didn't care about that though. They told me that I needed to get married soon so that I could have a family and be a respectable woman. What my parents didn't understand was that, it wasn't that I didn't want a family, but what I wanted was to wait for love. I wanted to wait for a person that felt like my other half and that gave me butterflies every time I saw them. Kujo knew I wasn't in love with him the way he was with me, but still tried to make me feel like a princess. That Valentine's Day was no different. He took me to the town festival and it was there that I met your father."
She sighed as she paused for a moment, fiddling with her hands.
"He looked almost identical to you," she said as she nodded at Jungkook. "He was standing off to the side, and watching couples throughout the evening. You were there with him Taehyung."
"I remember," said Taehyung. "I was with him like I had been at every Valentine's Day for the last several centuries. He was once again enjoying spreading his influence as he did every year. When he saw you though Haneul, you intrigued him because you looked so miserable in love."
"I didn't have a very good poker face then, and I still don't now," she said. "I remember he came over to me when Kujo had walked off for a second. He introduced himself to me as Cue, and said that he could help me fix my problems. I didn't believe such a thing was possible so I made a bet with him. I bet him that he couldn't make me fall in love with Kujo by the end of the night. I told him that if he won, he was the best matchmaker around. He took the bet greedily. If only I had known then how fast he would win. Or at least, think he would win."
"Wait...what do you mean?" asked Jungkook.
"I certainly fell for Kujo because your father made me," she said.
"But how do you know that?" Jungkook asked confused. Had his father really revealed his identity to someone?
"He was jealous," said Taehyung, jumping in. "He was jealous that her attention was on someone else. He couldn't explain why - after several decades - this one woman wouldn't rid herself from his mind. Everything that Haneul did with Kujo just caused the jealousy to rise. I told him that he ought to go talk to Haneul; that maybe this was love. He got mad at me, telling me that I knew nothing about love and that he was the only one that did. To prove his point, he snapped Haenul out of the spell towards the second half of the night, and told her everything. He told her how the love she felt for Kujo was fake; that it was something that he fabricated because he was Cupid. He told her that she was weak to fall so easily for Kujo - even with his spell - and demanded to know how she could be so gullible."
"He was rather cute when he got jealous," she said, "And a jerk, so I told him so."
"Which resulted in him exchanging some heated words with her back," added Taehyung.
"Until it finally culminated in a kiss," she said, "And it was in that moment that I felt what love really felt like. My stomach exploded in a flutter of butterflies. It was the most loving and passionate kiss I'd ever felt."
"He felt the same," said Taehyung. "I had never seen him with anyone the way he was with her."
"We spent the rest of the night in each other's company," Haneul said as she continued the story. "He asked me to wait for him. He said that he would create an heir to take his place, and that when the heir was his age, he would come back to be with me. Even though I loved him desperately, that...that wasn't practical for me. One, it would be horrible to subject someone else to a loveless fate, and two he may be immortal, but I wasn't. I was going to continue to age, and my time to start a family would come and go. I told him he ought to just give it all up and stay; that love didn't need someone controlling it, but he didn't listen. He said that love was a chaotic beast that needed to be directed; that love couldn't form on its own. He said that we were an exception. When we said goodbye that night, I knew he wouldn't come back. I was right."
Haneul fell silent again as she looked at Taehyung and Jungkook.
"My parents were ultimately right. I didn't have time to wait for love. I couldn't afford to. I waited a year or two in the hopes that Cue would change his mind, but when he didn't, I couldn't wait anymore. I had to move on with my life. I married Kujo, and over the years I did grow to love him. My parents gave us my childhood home to raise my family in with him, and we had Junghyun and Nabi together. He was a wonderful husband to me."
"Why didn't my father make you forget him?" asked Jungkook. "Make you forget him and everything else about that night?"
"I suspect he didn't have me forget him because he was still hoping to come back someday to prove me wrong. He seemed to be someone that liked doing that."
"I suspect the same," said Taehyung as he looked over at Jungkook.
Haneul's eyes looked over Jungkook as he sat in front of her.
"I don't know how he did it, but you look almost identical to the man I met all those years ago," said Haneul. "Almost like a perfect clone."
Jungkook just sat there for a moment, letting everything sink in. It was odd for him to think of his father loving anyone. It still seemed like nothing changed though. He still chose power over love. But then...then maybe that was why he was so angry at him when he refused to give up Ame. Maybe a part of him still loved Haneul and was angry he couldn't go back to her because Jungkook chose love. Maybe his father was angry that she was right that he wouldn't come back; that he made his choice.
Jungkook turned his head to take in all the surroundings around him. If his father had chosen love, would this be his life? Taehyung sat beside Jungkook still as Jungkook's head turned to look at him.
"Why didn't you come to visit Haneul at all over the years? Why didn't you tell me any of this sooner?
"I wanted to, but your father...he made me feel responsible for it all. He had to watch Haneul accept Kujo as her husband. He told me to make sure that you - his son - grew up to be different than him. He told me not to screw up again. So I dedicated myself to watching over you like a hawk."
"Wait..." Haneul interrupted; tears glistening in her eyes. "Cue made me fall in love with Kujo?"
"Sort of," said Taehyung. "He didn't stand in your way, but he let the love happen naturally. He didn't stop the engagement or marriage, but I could tell it hurt him."
She nodded as she looked at Taehyung and Jungkook; quickly wiping away her tears.
"So why are you two here now? It's not Valentine's Day."
"We were cursed to be mortals because Jungkook fell in love," said Taehyung. "He refused to forget her or give her up. Cupid was angry, and I...I told him to punish me with him because - not only did I feel responsible - but I too fell in love."
"That makes sense then why I thought members of BTS looked so familiar..." said Haneul. "I didn't let Nabi have anything of theirs for a while because it was too painful to have a reminder around. I eventually relented because I thought I must be crazy."
"But you weren't," said Taehyung.
Taehyung turned his head to the side as he watched Jungkook stand up. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides as he did. Tears of an undetermined emotion stirred in his eyes.
"On behalf of my father, I am sorry," said Jungkook as he looked at her. A tear or two slipped free from his eyes as he stood there.
Haneul smiled softly as she moved to stand up from the chair. She closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms about him in a hug.
"No...I should be the one that is sorry," she said as she hugged him. "He created you to take his place because of me. He made your life miserable because of me..."
Jungkook's arms went about her, hugging her back. This must be what having a mother felt like. He hugged her back for a small while, trying to control the emotions broiling inside him.
"But never apologize for love," he heard her whisper. "Love is never a mistake. It is a blessing. That woman you fell for...don't let her go. Hang on to her no matter what."
Jungkook nodded, pulling back from the hug. Haneul grabbed a tissue out of the tissue box on her desk, gently dabbing at his eyes.
"Now, please say you'll stay for supper. I'd like you to get to know my children," she said.
"We'd like that very much," said Taehyung as he dug out his phone to text Ruby that they'd be a bit late.
"Why did you say you needed my help though?" she asked as they walked towards the door, only then seeming to remember Taehyung's words on the porch.
"Because Jungkook and I both remember who we are. We remember the people we love," said Taehyung. "We have no doubt made Cupid angry again, and you're the only one that he will possibly listen to because somewhere deep inside him, he still loves you."
Haneul looked anxiously from Jungkook to Taehyung before looking at her family's picture on the mantle. She eventually nodded her head.
"I'm not sure what I'll be able to do or if he'll even love me now seeing as I've aged, but I can try."
Taehyung nodded moving over to pat her on the shoulder. As they exited the office, Bam raced over to Haneul, jumping up on her leg.
"Mom! Junghyun is burning the pizza!"
"I am not, Nabi! Geezum! This is exactly why I moved out!"
"You'll have to forgive my children," said Haneul as she moved to walk into the kitchen where Junghyun stood near the stove. "Junghyun, stop yelling at your sister! You're twenty-three! You should know better."
Junghyun turned his irritated look at his mom and saw the two men standing behind her. He couldn't help but to smirk then.
"I can't believe it. Nabi was right. You two are from BTS."
"See! I told you," said Nabi as she stuck her tongue out at her brother for a moment before racing over to the two of them. "Can I have your autographs? Please!"
Bam seemed to bark a 'please' of his own then, and Jungkook - for the first time since his memories came back - couldn't help but to smile. For the first time in his life, he finally felt like he was home.
