58. Lost In The Forest
As Taehyung and Jungkook drove out of the small town into the forest of trees, the sunlight seemed to become blocked from view. Even though it was only about midday, the whole place seemed to be shrouded in darkness like it had become night. Taehyung kept his eyes focused on the road as he turned the headlights on to be able to see a bit better.
"I feel like we're off to see a witch," muttered Jungkook beside Taehyung.
Taehyung smirked, rolling his eyes as he looked over at Jungkook briefly before turning his eyes back to the road. After a few more minutes of driving in darkness, the mini van emerged into the light of the sun again. They now found themselves amongst a small smattering of cabins near the base of the green mountain. A lake off to the right blinked at them in the sun; looking as if each ripple was made from a piece of sunshine. Taehyung scanned the houses, pulling off onto a small side street. There were more houses here, but they were spaced out more. He eventually parked the mini van outside a house with the number '234' blowing back and forth in the wind on the mailbox.
"We're here," announced Taehyung as he turned the van off.
Jungkook leaned forward to look out the window at the house they had pulled up in front of. It was a small wooden plank house that had grass green shutters on every window. The yard was rather spacious; a swinging bench in the backyard swinging back and forth in the breeze in front of a play set. Taehyung moved to get out of the van first; Jungkook being quick to follow.
The two of them walked past the wooden fence at the foot of the road and up the weedy stone walkway. The front porch of the small house was covered in a variety of children's toys. Some were lying on their sides, completely forgotten. Others looked as if they had become a dog's chew toy. As Taehyung climbed the steps, he made sure not to step on any of them. From the inside of the house, he could hear the loud barking of a dog that was announcing their presence.
"Are you sure about this?" asked Jungkook.
Taehyung nodded. This place seemed familiar even though it had been a while since he'd been there. He lifted up his hand to knock on the door, waiting a beat or two before a twelve year old girl opened the door. Her cinnamon brown hair matched the freckles that danced along the bridge of her nose. Her spring green eyes narrowed at the two masked men standing before her.
"BAM!" she shouted.
Five seconds later, a large doberman came barreling down the hallway; its thunderous footsteps making the pictures on the wall of the hallway bounce against the wall. Soon the dog came to a pause beside the little girl. The dog had its ears flattened against its head, narrowing his black eyes at the two standing there. The girl turned to wrap her arms about the dog's neck in a gentle hug.
"Do I need to release my dog to attack the both of you?" she asked. "Bam is very protective."
"We haven't come to hurt you or anyone else," said Taehyung as he reached up to push the hood off his head. He took the mask and sunglasses off shortly after, just leaving the beanie on. "Is your mom home?"
She looked at Taehyung's now exposed face to Jungkook's as he moved to do the same.
"She's not home right now. She went to go get my older brother. He has come to town for a visit," she said. "Wait...are you...wait a second!"
The twelve year old girl took off running back through the house, letting go of Bam so the dog was left in limbo wondering whether or not to attack these strangers. When she came running back, she had a BTS album clutched tightly in her hands. She began to rummage through the photo book inside, pausing when she came across their pictures. She moved to hold the photo book up to compare it to their faces.
"My mom just bought me my first album," she said. "It's slightly used, but I still love it. She wouldn't buy me one of the albums for the longest time...You two...you're them?"
Taehyung smiled softly, nodding.
"Why do you need to see my mom? Did she try to buy tickets for me or something?" she asked; her eyes lighting up at the thought.
"No, I just..."
"Get away from my daughter!"
Turning at the shrill sound of a woman's voice, Taehyung and Jungkook both looked to see that a woman had suddenly appeared at the foot of the path. A small beat up white car was currently parked behind the mini van. The woman looked to be about in her fifties with a carmel brown coat and blue jeans on; a bag of groceries balanced on her hip. A man in his early twenties stood beside her. He was wearing a red baseball jacket and navy blue jeans. His black hair stuck up a bit in the breeze as his dark eyes narrowed in on the two strangers near his little sister. He looked almost exactly identical to the woman, so one could see instantly that, that was her son.
"What do you two punks think that you're doing?!"
The man dropped his grocery bag and came rushing up the steps. Jungkook was the closest, so the man gripped him by the collar and pushed him up against one of the support beams on the porch. Jungkook was left to stare into the angry gaze of the other man. Jungkook was trying to push the man off him but in vain. The man - though similar to him in age - seemed to be just the tiniest bit stronger in his rage.
"JUNGHYUN! Let him go!" the woman shouted.
The man named Junghyun looked past Jungkook's shoulder to his mother as she rushed up the walkway before letting out a grunt of acknowledgement. Jungkook was trying to straighten out his hoodie as the woman looked at the two strange men that stood on the porch. She looked from Taehyung to Jungkook; her face paling when she saw him. She took slow steps towards him, soon pausing inches in front of him. Jungkook stared at her back, unsure of what to do.
"You look a lot like him..." she whispered so quietly that Jungkook almost missed it. The woman turned her head to Junghyun who stood awkwardly off to the side.
"Go inside and help Nabi get things ready for supper. We're having some guests tonight."
"I don't think you should be inviting these strangers in. What I think you should be doing is calling the police," said Junghyun about to argue with his mother. She held up a hand though to indicate that he was to bite his tongue, so he did.
"Junghyun, you do as I say. While you are under my roof - even if it's just temporarily - you will obey my rules."
He grumbled but nodded his head. As he walked towards the front door, he brushed past Taehyung. Nabi still stood there holding the BTS photo book, shoving it up at Junghyun as he walked quickly down the hall.
"Junghyun! Look! It's them!"
"Stop it, Nabi!"
"But really! It really is!"
Bam - deciding that the strangers weren't a threat after all - barked and followed after them to the kitchen; all three of their voices eventually becoming drowned out by the house they had entered. Once it was just the three of them on the porch, the woman turned back to studying Jungkook's face. Jungkook hadn't moved a muscle from where he was standing as the woman grabbed his face in her hand, studying it closely. He let her.
"You're his son, aren't you?" she asked softly as she looked at Jungkook. "The one he was telling me about."
"Yes," said Taehyung as he looked at the woman, answering for Jungkook. "He is."
The woman dropped her hold on Jungkook's face then as she turned to look at Taehyung. Her eyes widened when she saw him as if just noticing him for the first time.
"Hello, Haneul," said Taehyung with a small smile. "Sorry it has been so long. We need your help."
