55. The Return
Jungkook entered the park a few minutes behind Charming and Ame. He saw Charming cuddling her on the bench, and just stood off to the side watching for a minute. He hadn't untied the length of ribbon from his wrist. It had flew behind him in the night as he ran. He had run across one of Ame's discarded heels in his run, holding it now in one hand.
The woman in red had always eluded him in his dreams. He refused to have that happen in real life.
He felt as if a war was being raged on his psyche. One part of him was trying to tell him about his life now being real while another part was telling him that his life was a lie. Jungkook had been trying to process it all on the run over, but it didn't make sense. It hurt to remember both mentally and physically. Every part of him felt set to shatter at any second if he allowed himself to dwell on anything for too long.
From where he stood, he couldn't tell what Charming and Ame were saying. All he could see was the way that Charming was comforting her. His aching brain told him that, that was what Charming's purpose was supposed to be until he returned. How did that make sense though? He didn't know Charming before a few days ago...right?
'I gave her Charming,' thought Jungkook. 'I made the bunny fall for her so she'd have someone to be in my place until I returned.'
Jungkook watched as Charming kept Ame's body tucked up against his; letting her cry into his neck. He allowed himself to remain in the shadows for a moment longer before stepping out into view. He was soon standing in front of the bench where Charming and Ame were. Charming noticed Jungkook first. Charming turned his head towards him and just stared at him in silence for a moment. Jungkook stared back. As the two of them locked eyes, some sort of understanding seemed to pass between them. Jungkook noticed that Charming's eyes reminded him of the bunny he had given to Ame.
That was real? Why was that such a concrete thought now?
Charming eventually broke the stare, looking back down at Ame as he gently squeezed her shoulders. She looked up at Charming for a moment before he nodded his head towards Jungkook.
Ame turned her head slowly to look at Jungkook and the two of them just stared at each other in silence for a moment. Ame took in Jungkook standing in front of her. He was dressed in a midnight blue dress shirt and black dress slacks with a pinstripe down the side. He was currently unmasked so that she could see his face clearly. Ame moved to stand up from the bench. Jungkook was the one that dared to take a step forward first. Ame was blinking back tears as she watched him start to close the distance between them.
There was more to Jungkook than just being a member of BTS. There was a reason he was around, and there was a reason that he was standing here now. Even though it was hard for Ame to believe, she felt in her twisting gut that it was true. It had to be true. The tears streamed silently down her face as Jungkook kept taking steps towards her until he was just a few feet away.
"What is with you and not liking shoes?" He asked. He held up the one shoe he still held; tears in his eyes. "Do you not remember that these are to be worn on your feet and not to be used as weapons?"
The tears sparkled in her eyes like stars on the cusp of falling from the sky. Jungkook let the shoe drop to the grass as he took a step or two closer.
"Where have you been?" she asked softly as a few tears dripped off her cheeks and onto the grass.
"Right here," he said, reaching out a hand to catch her tears. He began gently brushing them away. Her cold cheek burned under the warmth of his touch. "I've been right here. I told you I'd come back to you someday. It just took some time."
"I hate you," she whispered to which he smiled faintly.
"I hate me too," he whispered back. "I'm sorry it took me so long."
"You promised me a year..." she said. "And you're late."
"I don't think I ever told you how long I'd be...Besides, even if I had promised you a year, I'm only late by a few days..."
"Call it what you will...you're still late," she said with a weak laugh. She paused for a moment as she looked at him before adding, "None of this...none of this makes sense."
"When did it ever make sense?" He asked with a weak laugh of his own.
Jungkook ran his thumbs gently across Ame's cheeks, looking her over. The one kiss they had shared in the dark had brought light back to their life. It didn't make sense, and a lot of the memories were still cloudy, but Jungkook knew with certainty who she was to him.
"You're here," she said as she watched him.
"I'm here," he said. "As promised."
"I really, really hate you..." said Ame with a paper thin smile.
Jungkook looked past Ame at Charming on the bench. Charming sat there watching the two of them. He made eye contact with Jungkook again before smiling weakly himself. He nodded his head, as if giving permission to Jungkook. A few tears fell from Jungkook's eyes as he locked his gaze upon Ame again. Moving to cup both her cheeks in his hands, he leaned forward and captured her lips with his. Wrapping her arms about his neck, she was quick to kiss him back. They were soon both closing their eyes as they fell into the loving kiss.
