45. Comparing Notes

Ruby sat in the driver's seat of the car, looking at the photos she had taken with Taehyung in the photo booth. She looked at how they showed a progression from friendship into something more. That kiss had been absolutely magical. It was soft and tender. It was full of love and longing. It also set free everything that she hadn't known had been suppressed in her mind before. The new memories flitted about her mind like fireflies; brightening the darkness that Talia and the whole Dexter situation had brought on.

The interior lights in the car came on as Taehyung suddenly opened the passenger door and got in. He had two notebooks tucked up against his chest with a box of fries in his hand. He put the fries on the dash before shutting the door. Taehyung then moved to take off his disguise until Ruby could clearly see his face again. She had parked the car in a darker part of the mall parking lot where no one would see them. Jimin and Freddi were still in the mall shopping, unaware that they were both outside. Ruby knew Freddi would text if she was worried.

"Here," said Taehyung as he handed her a purple notebook and a pen. "I want you to write down all the new memories you have, and try to be as detailed as possible. I'll do the same in my notebook. Then we can compare notes to see if that night was real."

"And the fries?" she asked. "What are those for?"

"Brain food," said Taehyung with a small smile. "I figured you might be hungry for a snack."

She felt her heart flutter in her chest. He was so thoughtful. She flipped open her notebook to the first page as she began to write down the memories floating around in her head. Taehyung sat next to her doing the exact same thing. While she had to think about what she was writing down at times, he seemed to be writing things down in a frantic fashion.

Ruby decided the best way to organize her points was to make a bullet point list. Sometimes what she wrote down wasn't necessarily in the right order, but she wanted to write the memory down as it came to her incase it slipped away.

She had always thought that there had been someone that had saved her that night, but was it possible that it had been Taehyung? Looking at her notes for a brief moment before she continued writing, she could see it definitely was. Then that would also mean BTS wasn't around last Valentine's Day. It would mean that the band didn't exist. Ruby didn't understand how that made any sort of sense seeing that BTS wasn't a recently formed group. It was like BTS itself was developed as a cover. She had fallen for Taehyung before he had been the Taehyung well loved around the world.

Ruby didn't know how long she had been writing. All she knew was that - by the time she was done - her hand was sore and she had written a full page and a half. Looking over, she saw that Taehyung had flipped yet another page in his notebook, still madly writing. This was one night in her mind that had gotten erased, but it seemed to be so much more for him. Ruby watched him write, reaching out a hand to steal a fry to eat while she waited.

"You're done?" he asked.

She nodded watching as he gave a small frown before jotting down another thing that came to his mind.

"I'll stop for now. I'd really like to compare our memories of last Valentine's Day," he said. "If that matches up, then I will know the rest of these weird memories appearing in my mind are real too."

Taehyung held out his hand for Ruby's notebook, and Ruby handed it over to him. As Taehyung put it down on his lap, he began to compare the two sets of notes. He ripped a clean sheet of paper out of his notebook so that he could compile all the similarities into a chart.

"We match down to the last detail," he said as he looked back over at her, handing her the chart he made so she could see it. Even though they had written the memory down in different words, they mirrored each other. That time they had spent together existed between the both of them and did so vividly.

"Are you okay?" Ruby asked. It felt odd to ask him that, but she could tell how distressed he was.

"I...no. Honestly, no."

She reached across to lay a hand on his knee before using her free hand to grab him a fry from the box, holding it out to him.

"Try one before they are cold."

"And why should I eat a fry right now when my brain is frying?"

"Because they're good. Duh."

Taehyung chuckled softly, putting the notebooks on the dash so that he could place one hand over the hand Ruby had on his knee. He then leaned towards her with his mouth open so Ruby could slip the fry inside. Ruby chuckled as Taehyung leaned back some to thoughtfully chew it.

Ruby looked towards the chart still on her lap when she noticed some odd details she hadn't noticed at first glance. Taehyung had put down that he and Jungkook had arrived to observe Valentine's Day. Not only was Jungkook mentioned, but what did that mean?

"Tae," she said as he swallowed the fry in his mouth. "What do you mean when you say you and Jungkook came to observe Valentine's Day?"

"You're not going to believe it," said Taehyung. "I mean, I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around it, but I'll tell you anyway."

"Well?"

"I used to be immortal," said Taehyung as he turned his head to look at Ruby. "I used to be the right hand man of Cupid. I would watch him help guide couples on their way in love, but my main job was watching out for the son he created. That son was Jungkook. Cupid wanted Jungkook to take his place someday, so he would always send Jungkook and I to observe Valentine's Days together somewhere different every year. Cupid wanted us to know what to look for when trying to match couples, and he wanted Jungkook to learn how to use his power appropriately. Prior to Jungkook's creation, I would visit Earth every Valentine's Day with Cupid himself and watch him as he made people fall in love."

Ruby's face was passive as her mind tried to make sense of everything that Taehyung had just said.

"So Jungkook was a part of that night too last year?" Ruby asked.

Taehyung nodded.

"Jungkook was trying to get me to stop chaperoning him that night, so he had you fall for me and then ended up getting mixed up with a lady for the evening."

"That lady being Ame," said Ruby slowly. "So my sister...the night her ex-fiancée broke her heart..."

"Jungkook was there to pick up the pieces just like I was for you," said Taehyung. "Our situations were just a bit different."

"And you used to be immortal?"

Taehyung nodded his head again.

"Jungkook was set to be immortal too, but we both gave it up and allowed Cupid to curse us and turn us into mortals."

"I should apologize then," she said, flushing.

"Apologize why?"

"First of all because I was under a spell. I threw myself at you when I doubt you wanted to entertain me all evening."

"I will admit that I was ticked by what Jungkook did at first, but as the evening went on, I couldn't help but to admire you. Do you not remember the kiss we just had? I wanted to give it to you when I left the first time, but I wanted you to not be under a spell when it happened. Heck, you're probably under a different spell now. I'm a member of BTS. I'm your bias. I took advantage of Talia hurting you and..."

"Hey," she said, squeezing his knee. "You didn't take advantage of me. Yes, I fell for you. You became my bias, but I've gotten to know you over the last couple of days, and I've fallen for you. The real you. The you that only certain people are lucky enough to see."

She felt him close his hand about the top of hers gently.

"If all this craziness is true, I...I love you even more because you came back to me," she continued before adding in a softer voice, "And I apologize second of all because you lost your immortality for me."

"Don't apologize for that. I couldn't let Jungkook go through this alone, and I wanted to come back to you anyway. I wanted to make it so you could never again say you were a lonely heart," Taehyung said softly.

Ruby felt the tears rolling down her face as she looked over at Taehyung in the passenger's seat. He reached out a hand to wipe the tears away, before holding her hand in a way that would allow them to lace their fingers together.

"You won't disappear again then?" she asked.

"Not in the way I did," he said. "Mortality has given me what I've always wanted."

He frowned when he let his eyes wander to look at the chart.

"As a Dream Team, we have to change our mission a bit. Cupid...Jungkook's father, he's set to keep Ame and him apart. We can't let Cupid win. We're just going to have to get creative about it because Cupid can see everything."

"Then he can see us?" she asked, fear creeping into her voice.

"He can, but he won't notice us. We're not his focus. Jungkook and Ame are. That's why Charming is human. He's using Charming as a pawn to drive the wedge in between them to separate them even more. You see, Cupid has a complex, and Jungkook falling in love with Ame is the center of that. Cupid will not rest until he wins; until he is able to prove he is the only one that can control love. Winning would mean Jungkook and Ame would never be together."

"What happens if we succeed? If we can get them together?"

"Then they'll no doubt remember like we did," said Taehyung. "And maybe Jungkook and I can stop Cupid once and for all."

It was clear that the wheels in Taehyung's mind were spinning as he tried to come up with some solution that Cupid wouldn't see coming. Ruby could tell he was preoccupied, squeezing their joined hands to make him look at her and lock his eyes on hers.

"You're not alone," she said. "As someone famous once said, you never walk alone."

"Hmmm...I wonder who could have said that?" Taehyung said with a small smile and a chuckle.

Ruby smiled too as she added, "We will figure this out together as a team. I promise."

Taehyung knew Ruby was right, and thankfully right now no one's eyes - including Cupid's - were watching them. He moved in to capture Ruby's lips in a gentle yet loving kiss, closing his eyes. She closed her eyes in return as she kissed him in the same manner back. The thank you they both needed to say to each other at that moment couldn't be expressed adequately in words.
