44. Some Assembly Required
Jungkook never thought that assembling furniture would become such a big part of his life, but here he was yet again trying to assemble something. When Jungkook had discovered that Charming had fallen asleep next to Ame in her bed last night because he had felt too out of place on the couch, he had suggested that she get him a futon to sleep on. It was still a bed in a way, but he would be able to feel the metal braces underneath the thin cushion. The presence of the metal bars could serve to remind Charming of the cage he had, had at one point in time. Ame had agreed to the idea.
Jungkook figured that he would have an easy enough time assembling it since he had helped Taehyung to assemble their own. However, the futon that Ame had picked up at the discount store had directions that were poorly explained. It almost seemed as if Charming had been the author. It made about as much sense as he did at times. Speaking of Charming, he certainly wasn't helping matters though he was trying to offer to be helpful. He sat near Jungkook, watching him bite the corner of his lip as he studied the directions in his hands.
"What can I do to help?" Charming asked.
"I don't know yet," said Jungkook, "Just like I didn't know when you asked thirty seconds ago."
Jungkook put the directions aside, beginning to rifle through the plastic bags. Why were there so many this time? The futon was the same size as the one he and Taehyung had. 'Some assembly required' is what the box had warned in red block lettering on the outside. Talk about the understatement of the century.
"What are you looking for?" asked Charming as he watched Jungkook.
"The bag of nuts," he said. "I need them to hold the screws in place."
Jungkook saw Charming move to spring to his feet out of the corner of his eye. Charming rushed off to the kitchen where Ame was finishing up supper. After everything that Jungkook had done for her that afternoon - both with Charming and the money - Ame wanted to cook him a supper to thank him. She remembered her mother once telling her that food was the way to satisfy a man; that it was a way to either win his heart or to thank him. She was looking to do the later at this point in time. Jungkook had proved to be an amazing friend, even more so when he had offered to put together the futon for Charming so she didn't have to worry about it later.
Ame was under pressure to cook a dinner that Jungkook would like. She looked at the strips of beef she currently had sizzling in the pan before flicking her gaze over to her tablet that she had propped up against the backsplash. She currently had a YouTube tutorial on pause so she could follow it step-by-step. Why was cooking beef stir fry so hard?
"Ame, where do you keep the bag of nuts?" asked Charming as he stood in the kitchen doorway.
"Huh?" She asked, half turning to look at him in confusion, not having any clue why he would ask that. If she wasn't so focused on the cooking she was doing, she might have put two-and-two together.
"Do you have a bag of nuts in here?"
"I have a bag of pistachios," said Ame as she nodded towards one of the nearby cabinets.
Charming moved towards the cabinet she nodded at. He couldn't read all that well yet, so he kept grabbing up every bag in the cabinet until he had found the bag that Ame confirmed was the pistachios. Holding it tightly in his hands, he returned victorious to the other just as Jungkook tried (and failed) to insert a screw into one of the futon's legs. The screw that Jungkook had been trying to insert flew out of the hole and hit the nearby wall.
"I found the bag of nuts, Jungkook!"
Turning, Jungkook looked at what Charming held in his hand.
"Those aren't...you're nuts!" He said in exasperation.
"I don't look like this though," said Charming as he looked at the picture of the pistachios on the bag.
Jungkook looked at Charming, shaking the screwdriver in his hand at him for a moment before muttering under his breath as he turned back around to work on the futon. Jungkook felt that either Taehyung's furniture assembly frustration was contagious, or his patience for the day had fallen worn out. Charming watched Jungkook work, standing off to the side a bit. Ame moved to enter the living room once the meal was set for a moment. She had heard the end of the exchange, moving to kneel down beside Jungkook. She looked at the mess of parts still spread out along the carpet.
"I think the food is alright on its own for a moment. Do you want help, or did you want to tap out for a moment and I could try taking over?"
"Help would be appreciated," he said.
Nodding, she leaned forward to pick up the directions.
"I think it'll take two people to get this done anyway," said Ame.
Jungkook couldn't help but to think how what Ame had just said was a metaphor for their friendship. For their friendship to exist, it was going to take the both of them giving an effort. If only one of them tried to build the friendship on their own, it was destined to fail and fall apart. Two people building a friendship together would build something that would last. Maybe even something more.

Working together, Jungkook and Ame had managed to assemble the futon. They showed Charming how it worked like a bed, and watched him test it out. It took him a moment, but he seemed to enjoy it better than the couch. He enjoyed it so much so that - as Ame disappeared into the kitchen to dish up the food she had cooked - Charming had passed right out. Ame didn't have the heart to wake him, moving to save a plate of food aside for him.
Jungkook and her ate the food cross-legged on the living room floor in silence for the first minute or two. She watched him scoop up a strip of beef with the rice and spring peas, slipping it into his mouth.
"Be honest," she said. "Is it good or bad?"
"Do I do a five star rating?"
"I guess," she said. "Is this a Yelp review?"
He smirked as he chewed the mouthful slowly as if contemplating every flavor before swallowing.
"Three," he said.
"Three!" She exclaimed before chuckling, "Why three?"
"Needs more sauce," he said as he nodded at his barely saucy rice. "Plus I think the steak got a little chewy in the pan while you came to help me with the futon. I'll forgive that though since you were more help than Mr. Pistachio."
Ame smiled as she moved to shove a bite into her mouth.
"Charming is just trying to help."
"He is helping to test my patience for sure," said Jungkook. "Why are you so adamant that he is your bunny?"
"He just knows too much," said Ame.
"And you're sure he's not a stalker?" asked Jungkook with an arched brow.
"I doubt he even knows what that word means," said Ame.
"Fair point," said Jungkook. "But I mean...a bunny turning into a man. You really believe that can happen?"
"Well, stranger things have happened."
"Oh really? Like what?"
"Like Jeon Jungkook sitting in my apartment eating a meal I prepared after giving me a million dollars because my shoddy ex fiancée emptied my account."
Jungkook was silent for a moment before he chuckled.
"I still think your bunny man is stranger," he said.
'Oh if only Ame knew why I was really here,' Jungkook thought. 'Then she would think that was the strangest reason of all.'

After Jungkook and Ame had finished eating, the two of them moved to sit on the couch together, flicking through the television for something to watch. Charming was still sound asleep on the futon the two of them had built together. Eventually, Ame decided to leave it on a dancing competition. The two of them sat side-by-side on the couch in silence as they watched different couples in bright uniforms waltz about the stage.
Ame started to cry softly when she watched one man go over to a woman seated in the front row of the audience. He kissed her hand and then drew her to her feet. It was obvious to everyone in the studio and anyone watching that this man was infatuated with this woman. He loved her, and they moved as one. Seeing such a loving relationship display itself in front of Ame hurt her. She was again reminded of her ex. A man that she had been with for five years. A man who had promised her the world, and instead ruined hers.
"Are you okay?" Jungkook asked.
Ame just nodded, quickly reaching up a hand to wipe the tears away. Normally she didn't break down in front of others over something so sappy. However, she obviously felt comfortable crying in front of Jungkook. She felt like she had been doing that a lot lately.
"Why are you crying then?" Jungkook asked softly; his head turned to look over at her.
"You're not going to let it go, are you?" She asked, finally managing to make her eyes stop watering.
"Not until you answer, no," he said.
She rolled her eyes as she watched the dancing on the television for a moment more before answering.
"I want to find someone to love me like that. I want someone that can sweep me off my feet like those couples on the television."
Without a word, Jungkook stood up from the couch and moved to stand in front of her, extending his hand out towards her.
"What are you doing?" she asked, looking at his hand.
"I'm asking you to dance," Jungkook said. "Now take my hand and come on."
She looked at his hand for a moment more before a thin smile came upon her face. Ame moved to stand to her feet as her hand slipped into his.
"I should warn you. I have two left feet."
"You're lucky I can dance," he said. "Though this kind of dancing is not usually what I do."
Ame let him pull her into a hold in front of the television.
"Stand on my feet," he said as he nodded down at his black stocking feet on the carpet.
Ame looked down at her own white stocking feet near his black ones, gently moving to put her feet on top of his. He kept her close in a hold as they gently began to dance around in time to the music on the television. Silence stretched between them for a moment as they just slowly moved about together.
"Am I breaking every bone in your foot yet?" Ame eventually asked.
"Maybe," he said with a small smile, beginning to laugh when Ame slipped a hand out of the hold for a moment to playfully swat at his shoulder.
This felt familiar to Jungkook. Maybe like the futon, all it took for their friendship to develop into something more was a bit of assembly. It would take patience and time, but maybe they could eventually be something more.
