43. A Picture's Worth

Ruby was quick. Taehyung would give her that. He hadn't been that far behind her leaving the clothing store, but he had no idea where she had gone. He started to systematically comb through the mall section by section as he looked for her face. He was just walking out of the food court and towards the west wing of the mall when he passed by a few photo booths that were sectioned off together.

It was as he walked past that he swore he could hear sniffling.

"Ruby?" He asked as he went over to the photo booth, rapping his knuckle gently on the side of it.

"Yes?"

Slipping into the photo booth after he heard Ruby's voice behind the curtain, he saw that she was sitting there half folded in on herself. She had her head turned away from him to try and hide the fact that she was crying.

"I'm sorry. I'm fine. I'll be there in a second."

Taehyung moved to slip into the cramped space, sitting down on what room there was left on the little bench seat after making sure the curtain was shut behind him. Ruby's cheeks turned a dark shade of red in shame at the fact that Taehyung was seeing her be such a mess.

"What's going on?" Taehyung asked softly.

"I saw Talia again," said Ruby. "In the clothing store just now."

"I saw her too. What did she say to you?" asked Taehyung as he moved to take the sunglasses off his face. He wanted Ruby to be able to see his eyes.

"It is more like what didn't she say to me. She always says something mean to me," said Ruby. "She hates me, and I don't even know why. Today she made fun of me again, claiming I was a member of the lonely hearts club."

"What does that mean?" asked Taehyung.

"It's basically another name for someone who is destined to be forever single," said Ruby. "I suppose I labeled myself wearing that shirt last Valentine's Day. She also made fun of me again tonight for having mistakenly fallen for a man that was already married. For some reason, he just threw himself at me last Valentine's Day. I fell for him. I didn't know he was married until his wife showed up. I wasn't trying to make him cheat on his wife. The whole situation was just a mess. Talia thinks it is funny, and harasses me with it constantly."

"Well Talia can go with her Peruvian dreamboat somewhere and just sail off into the sunset," said Taehyung.

Ruby half smiled as the tears continued to roll down her face. Taehyung reached out a hand to gently wipe them away, watching her closely.

"She doesn't deserve even one ounce of your time," said Taehyung. "Don't let her determine who you are. She knows absolutely nothing about you."

'Me on the other hand,' thought Taehyung as he brought his hand away before the moment became awkward.

Looking about them, he nodded his head towards the currently blank monitor of the photo booth.

"I have an idea for you," said Taehyung. "Does Talia know who BTS is?"

"Well, yes, but..."

Without saying anything else, Taehyung shifted to dig some money out of his pocket before putting some of it in the machine to make the screen turn on and come to life. Luckily the chute where the photo strips came out was inside the machine, so it would come into their hands first. Before he clicked on a photo option, Taehyung moved up a hand to remove the hood and beanie off his head before taking the mask off so that his face was completely exposed. The bench they were currently seated on was small, so it was easy for Taehyung to sit close to Ruby.

"Let's give you some photos to show her the next time she dares to hurt you," said Taehyung.

He clicked on an option before sitting back on the bench so that his arm brushed up against hers.

"Now, shall we go for silly first?" he asked as a countdown appeared on the screen.

"Sure," she said as her smile widened a bit more, "You know you don't have to do this."

"Oh, I know. I'm aware. I want to."

He moved to take hold of one of her hands for a brief moment to give it a small squeeze, letting go as the countdown ended. Five flashes happened spaced apart by thirty seconds or so. The two of them gave their craziest looks to the camera, watching as the photo strip came out after.

"Alright, lets do another round," said Taehyung. "This time lets give some less crazy ones. What do you think?"

Ruby just nodded her head. Taehyung was everything she could have always hoped for in a man. At least she had him as a friend. This time - as the countdown appeared for the second round - Taehyung shifted so that one of his arms was wrapped about her shoulders, tugging her in close against him. As the flashes started again, the two of them smiled at the camera; Taehyung doing his trademark 'V' at one point. The photo strip appeared after the flashes were done, depositing itself behind the first.

"Want to do one more?" asked Taehyung.

"Sure," said Ruby as she looked at him. "Thank you for doing this."

"Don't thank me," said Taehyung. "You deserve to be happy, Ruby."

As the countdown started for the third time, Ruby looked over at Taehyung. Taehyung turned to look back at her. Their eyes locked and everything about them seemed to fade away. Ruby watched Taehyung reach out a hand towards her again, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. As the flashes started, he continued to just stare at her before moving to lean forward and kiss her gently on the forehead.

That one kiss seemed to unlock something within her. Her mind reminded her of last Valentine's Day and about a masked stranger that had shown her a good evening after the horrific incident with Dexter. He had been a gentleman to her, but had remained mysterious behind his blue mask. He had never once given her his name. She clearly remembered having been in love with him as if under a spell. Why had she not remembered that before?

A similar thing was happening to Taehyung after he had kissed Ruby's forehead. This hadn't been the first time that he had spent time with Ruby and helped her feel better after heartache and embarrassment. He suddenly remembered that night. The Lonely Hearts Club shirt she had been wearing. The dancing they had done in the street. The desire he had, had to kiss her goodbye, but not wanting to take advantage of her since she was under a spell.

The flashes of the camera stopped and Taehyung turned away from Ruby for a moment, trying to make sense of all the weird foggy memories that were coming to him. Ruby looked over at Taehyung as the memories in her own head became more vivid with each passing second. When Taehyung eventually turned back to her, his own memories were clearer as well even though they still didn't make sense.

"Ruby," said Taehyung softly, locking his eyes on hers again. "Do you remember me?"

"I do," she said. "It doesn't make sense but we...we were together last Valentine's Day. You took care of me and nursed my broken heart."

"It doesn't make sense, but yes. I spent thousands of years watching Valentine's Days pass, but I had never met someone as special as you until that night. Someone who made losing immortality worth it to me," said Taehyung. "Immortality...listen to me. Can all this...can it all be real?"

"It has to be...right?" asked Ruby. "Why would we both remember a night that didn't exist?"

Taehyung nodded as he looked at her. They clearly had a lot to talk about, but there was something he wanted to do first.

"The only thing different about this time around," he said, "is that you aren't under a spell. If anything, I'm the one under the spell now."

Ruby's heart thudded in her chest as she watched Taehyung turn to shove more money into the machine. The countdown started again and Ruby watched as Taehyung gently cupped her face in his hands. His thumbs stroked gently over her cheeks before he leaned in to touch his lips softly against hers as the first flash went off. By the second flash, she was kissing back. By the third, one of Taehyung's hands had moved to the back of her neck to keep her head close as he kissed her more deeply and lovingly. By the fourth, Taehyung's free arm was about her waist to pull her near. By the time the fifth flash was done and the photos were dispensed, they were both completely lost in each other and that moment.
