37. Brushing Up
"Thank you for bringing something over for Charming to wear," said Ame when Jungkook stepped through her apartment door thirty minutes after the last text had been sent between them, shutting the door behind him.
Jungkook had shown up dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a black Puma hoodie. The sunglasses were currently on the top of his mess of black hair as he looked at her, extending the shirt as if it were some sort of peace offering. If Jungkook was willing to be a friend and help, she wouldn't say no. She needed a man around now to help her with Charming anyway. The more time that passed in Charming's presence, the more that Ame realized that he really didn't know what to do.
"Where is he?" asked Jungkook.
"In the bathroom getting ready," she said, nodding her head down the hall. "Do you think you could take the shirt and go see if you could help him?"
Jungkook didn't say anything for a moment before nodding his head. Keeping the plaid shirt in hand, he walked down the hall and almost collided with Ruby as she emerged from her room.
"Oh Jungkook! I'm sorry!"
"You're fine, Ruby," he said. "Good morning by the way. You heading out with Taehyung?"
"Yes," she said.
Ruby had changed into a pair of tan pants and a gray oversized sweatshirt. She hadn't bothered to do much to her hair besides tying it back into a ponytail with a red scrunchie. She wanted to be comfortable but not be dressed over the top. She didn't want to make Taehyung feel uncomfortable like she was idolizing him even though she couldn't help the way she felt.
"You and he are twins," Jungkook remarked as he stepped past her down the hall. "You dressed really similar today."
"Should I change?" She asked as she looked after Jungkook as he walked off.
"Nah. He'll love that you two share the same fashion sense," said Jungkook as he stopped outside the bathroom door, knocking on it.
Ruby moved to walk towards Ame, and Ame could see the flush of pride that was on her face at Jungkook's comment.
"I'm borrowing the car if that's okay," said Ruby.
"That's fine. We were going to walk anyway," said Ame as she watched Ruby grab the car keys out of the bowl by the door.
Ruby turned to look behind her shoulder to see that Jungkook had disappeared behind the bathroom door. Satisfied that he wasn't within hearing range, she narrowed her gaze on her sister.
"Be nice to him, Ame. Alright? Get to know him some."
"And why should I? He's just going to disappear in the end anyway."
And there was the truth of the matter. Ame was worried about letting her walls down because she was afraid of being hurt again by another man. Ruby looked her sister over with a passive expression on her face as she chose her next words carefully.
"I think Jungkook is one of those men that will always come back in the end. You will never know if you don't open up."
"Wonderful bit of advice there," said Ame with an eye roll. "But yes. I agreed to be his friend, so I will try."
"Thank you," said Ruby as she moved to give her sister a quick hug before slipping out the door to go meet up with Taehyung.
As the door shut behind Ruby, Ame's attention turned back to the bathroom door that Jungkook had disappeared behind. It had been left open a crack. Ame moved to walk that way since neither man had emerged from behind it yet.
"Is everything okay?" She asked as she moved to crack open the door.
Charming turned his head to greet her when she came in; his hair sticking up every which way still. The spare toothbrush that she had given him was half dangling out of his mouth, and the shirt that Jungkook had brought with him was only over one shoulder.
"Just give me your other arm," said Jungkook as he tried to grab Charming's right arm. It was clear that he was struggling to get him to wear the shirt.
Ame couldn't help but to chuckle at the sight. It was delightfully adorable. Ame entered the bathroom and moved to wet her fingertips at the sink, trying to get Charming's hair to lay back down flat on his head.
"It's like you've never worn a shirt before..." muttered Jungkook as he finally managed to get Charming's right arm through the sleeve of the plaid shirt.
"Ell ive maveent," came Charming's garbled reply around the toothbrush still in his mouth.
Once Ame had finally gotten his hair to lay down, she turned to the matter of brushing his teeth.
"Give me that," said Ame as she took the toothbrush out of Charming's mouth. As she did, a bit of toothpaste that was left on the brush flicked out and hit Jungkook in the side of the face.
Jungkook blinked his eyes quickly once or twice before bringing a hand up to his cheek to wipe it off.
"Come on dude!" said Jungkook.
"Sorry," said Charming as a faint blush appeared on his face.
Ame chuckled as she moved the toothbrush back towards the sink to put more toothpaste on it.
"Did you just eat the toothpaste instead?" she asked him.
"It tasted good," said Charming. "Very...sharp. What was it?"
"It's called mint flavored toothpaste. You're supposed to brush your teeth with it, not eat it," said Ame as she ran some water over the top of the toothpaste on the toothbrush head before turning back to face Charming. "Now smile."
Charming smiled at her then without showing his teeth, causing her to chuckle again as Jungkook muttered, 'unbelievable' under his breath as he moved in front of Charming to try to do up the buttons of his shirt.
"No. Smile but show your teeth," said Ame.
"Like this," said Jungkook as he did what Ame was asking as he faced Charming.
Charming looked at Jungkook, managing to imitate him.
"Good," said Ame. "Now stay like that for a minute."
Ame stepped forward until her shoulder was brushing up against Jungkook's as she moved to brush Charming's teeth. Jungkook looked over at Ame standing beside him as he finished up the last button. He pretended to stall with the last button just so he could freeze that moment for a little while longer.
"There," said Ame as she stepped away with the toothbrush.
Charming's mouth was now filled with the frothy toothpaste. Small dribbles of it were coming out of his mouth.
"Now you just have to spit it out," said Ame.
Before Ame could explain where to spit it out, Charming did exactly as she said. Charming spat out the mouthful of toothpaste right into Jungkook's face just as he was about to back away from buttoning Charming's shirt.
Ame couldn't help but to full on laugh then as Charming looked over embarrassed at the toothpaste covered Jungkook. Ame moved to grab a clean towel off a nearby rack then, coming over to Jungkook with it.
"Sorry. I should have told him the sink first," she said, trying to suppress her laughter.
"You think?" asked Jungkook as Ame gently rubbed at his face with the towel.
Charming watched Ame and Jungkook interact as he stood off to the side. There was something familiar to him about the whole thing, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was.
