A silhouette dashed through the inky darkness of night, jumping over logs and sticks and anything else that might get in his way. A pained cry echoed throughout the forest, scaring the birds and causing the sleeping animals to lift their heads in alarm. "I'm coming, Sea!" The figure yelled. "Hang in there!" The only answer was another cry of pain, weaker than the first.

As the creature reached the heart of the forest, he saw something that would cause anyone to screech in horror. His mate, covered in blood and laying half-dead on the ground. He ran towards her, grooming and cleaning the blood from her pelt. She smiled weakly, only to be interrupted by a spasm rippling throughout her body and another cry of pain.

Collapsing, she panted, her each breath weaker than the rest. The tom saw three tiny bodies near her flank. Only two were stirring. He grabbed the kits, which were both she-cats, and began cleaning them off.

After he'd finished, he turned his attention back to his mate. Her eyes were closed and breaths were shallow. "Sea?" he said, licking her cheek. She opened her eyes slightly. "Sea, your kits have arrived." He nudged her head to look at them, and she smiled weakly. "They're beautiful." She forced out, and reached out for one that was pitch black with a white muzzle and red eyes. "This one will be," She coughed, "Dark Rose." She put her down and let her continue suckling. Chocolate-her mate, of course-smiled at the small kit for a few moments. Still gazing at the kits, he asked "And the other?"

...

There was no answer.

He spun around, checking to see if Sea was okay.

Her chest had stopped rising.

Her eyes had stopped blinking.

She was dead.
