chapter two
Aru dragged herself to school. Another day with useless lessons and ridicule. Fun.
Mini, however, hummed along.
"What are you singing?" Aru spoke, breaking the silence.
"The Philosophy Song," Mini replied. When Aru gave her a blank look, she sighed. "But of course you've forgotten it."
"You have a weird taste in music. You're lucky I love you."
Mini rolled her eyes. But then she froze and grabbed Aru's shoulder. She followed her sister's line of sight and froze as well.
There they were.
Arielle Reddy, Poppy Lopez, Burton Prater, Prince Rudra and Prince Aiden. Poppy sneered in their direction, waving her hand in front of her face as if the smell of humans revolted her. Burton winked at her and she had to hold down her breakfast. Arielle just rolled her eyes. Prince Rudra stared at Mini with a strange look. When Aru heard a thud, she looked to her right and saw Mini, rubbing her forehead after walking into a wall. They snickered.
Aru ran over, taking her sister's hand. "You okay? What was that? Did he use the smolder or?"
"No," Mini said miserably. "That was all me."
Aru threw a hard look at them. "If you don't mind," She said, pulling Mini to her side. "You're blocking the entrance."
Poppy opened her mouth, probably to say something rude but Aiden stopped her. "Let them go in, Poppy."
They moved out of the way. Aru didn't spare another moment. She squeezed Mini's hand and they entered the class.
Aru almost wished she hadn't.
Madame Opal sat at her desk. The minute she heard them enter, she looked up, studying their appearance. "Sit."
Opal never really liked them, but really, who apart from Boo in this world did?
Aru sat down, gathering up all her will power to survive another day in this school.
The rest of them entered the class a minute later, and Opal smiled at them, not caring if they were late. Aru felt her fingers curl into a fist at the unfairness.
"Well?" Burton came over to Mini's desk. "Where is it?"
Mini stared at the floor while handing over her report on The Immortal War. Something must have possessed her, because Aru stood up quickly and snatched it back. "That's not yours."
Burton was momentarily surprised before he started snarling. "And who are you to tell me what's mine?"
"Mind your manners, girl!" Opal shrieked. "Remember your place!"
Burton took back the report in one swift move, snickering. "Remember your place."
Just when Aru was about to sit back down, a velvety voice spoke. "Just leave them alone."
"Standing up for them, Aiden?"
Aiden fixed his starry eyes on Mini and, for a split second, Aru. "It can't even be that good. They're mortal."
Aru almost defended Mini, but her sister kicked her foot with a fierce shake of her head. Burton cackled and left the report. He looked at Aru before he left. "I'll forgive your little outburst today. I like them feisty anyway."
Do I look like taco sauce to you? She almost screamed but it's not like they knew what taco sauce was anyway. Even she almost forgot the taste. It had been ten years, after all.
The walk home was long, but not nearly as long enough.
"Why did I hear from Opal today?" Boo asked, almost bored.
"You always do," Mini reminded him.
"She hates us," Aru added.
Kara, who had finished school already, rolled her eyes. "Opal's stupid, Boo. You really can't blame Aru for snapping back."
"At a prince?"
"I didn't snap back at any of the princes!" Aru defended herself. "Just at their annoying minions."
Boo narrowed his eyes and Aru sighed.
This was going to be a long evening.
