Chapter 17: A Sudden Scare & Duty

Hello everyone!! So, this chapter, guessing by the title, erm- (lots of commas) something happens! (wOw something happens) So, now with that, let's jump right into it :D

Enjoy!!

Hugo sleeps silently. He then gets a panicked knock on his door. Hugo groans and rubs his temples. "Come in," he says wearily.

His assistant burst into the room. "There is an incident," he remarks with fear. The prince's face was whiter than the bedsheets. His hair was messier than a bird's nest. He didn't look up to the standard he put on himself. "Continue," Hugo pushes impatiently. Goodness, what is with all the staff saying something bad with no context?

"It's your father - the king. He's in the hospital wing."

***

Emma blew her nose into a tissue. Louis looked sadly at his dad, gripping the hand railing of the bed. Everyone was deathly silent. They focused on the steady thumps from the machine. It was the constant reminder tragedy could happen any second.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Hugo found himself thinking to the rhythm of the machine. What was he supposed to think? Sadness? Worries? They were all blurred into one blob of emotion. The emotion he sucked deep into the hole where romantic traumas went.

Hugo doesn't know how to react, so he doesn't. He leaves the room and rubs his temples. By the time he was done, his thumbs and forehead would be red. Red like roses. Red like his father's blood. Red like Angela's heart.

"Hugo?" Angela says. Hugo turns his head around. "Angela," he replies stiffly, clearing his throat. He opens his mouth to say more but closes it. She is obviously here to talk to him, so he wants to make an opening for her to talk.

"What's happening?" She asks, lacing a strand of hair between her two fingers. She ties it into a knot. The knot shrivels back into the rest of her hair. Damn it; focus, Hugo. "My father, he's in the hospital," he finally says.

Her expression went sympathetic. "Any news on that scare?" She asked cautiously. Hugo shook his head. She nodded stiffly. "I'm sure we'll be hearing news soon, though," Hugo says after a long moment. She nods again, a smile forming. "That's good, right?"

"If only it was," Marinette says as she walked out of the room. She tossed Angela a wave. "His disease has been kicking at him for a long time. Let's hope that it releases him from this tight grip."

Hugo nods for a reaction. He wants to say something - anything. He can't; the shock mutes his mouth from working. "I do believe that we will need someone in his place," Marinette says. The two pairs of eyes shoot at Hugo.

"Yes," he says. "Wait, you mean me-" Hugo cut himself off. He looked to the ground. "Is this really the appropriate time? Could you not ask anyone else?"

"Is there something stopping you from helping out your poor mother?" Marinette says wittily. Hugo opens his mouth to protest. "How great. Hugo, go to your father's office. I'll give you time to get yourself ready." Marinette says, interrupting her son's protest.

Hugo sighed deeply as Angela giggled. "The queen truly is remarkable," she says with a glint in her tone. She then whipped her head to Hugo. "I-I mean, to bystanders! It may get annoying being related to her - not that it is annoying being related to her! I-"

Hugo chuckled as she cut herself off. "I would like to see how long you would be on that thought, but it seems I now have more pressing matters to concern myself with."

Angela nodded. "Do you need my help?"

"No, I will be okay," Hugo sighed. "No one can really help with this."

"Do you need an assistant?"

"I...what-?"

"Don't look at me like that!" Angela shout. "All kings have assistants - someone to keep track of all your work, bring your meals-"

"That just sounds like a slave," Hugo muttered.

Angela facepalmed herself. "Do you want the help or not?"

Hugo sighed. "Even if I were to consider your 'assistant' title, this would mean you would need to resign from your old job for the time being."

"That's fine," Angela says. "My mom is head maid, and once she finds out why, she'll be totally cool with it."

"Also, I do not think that the king has female assistants," Hugo remarked.

"What is that supposed to mean!" Angela shouted, the last part of her sentence pitching to a high, high D.

"Isn't it self-explanatory," Hugo replies with a smirk. Angela's face was unamused. "Nonetheless, it is a challenge. Are you up to it?"

Angela nods. "I'll be fine. You just worry about your problems, and I'll help you in the cloaked shadows!"

Hugo found himself smiling like a giddy little kid. "Okay, Miss. Cunningham," he says, referring to her formal name. "Send the documents to my chambers by noon, and also organize a set meeting with the prisoner of the name of Mr. Fu."

Angela nods. "Right away, your majesty."

***

Hugo nodded for the guards to disperse. Mr. Fu had refused to spit out a word until they left. It was fine, Hugo didn't learn the art of duelling for no reason.

Plagg stretched out his arms as Mr. Fu smiled. "Hello, Plagg," the old man smiles wearily. Hugo was stunned but kept his mouth shut. "Care to introduce us...?" Hugo asks his kwami.

"This is Master Fu, last leader from the organization of the guardians of the miraculous," Plagg explains.

Hugo cleared his throat. "So, you were the previous owner of the jewels?" He asks somewhat sheepishly.

Master Fu nods. "I do believe you had your reasons to reject my proposal to take them back," he replies calmly. Hugo's eyes dart to his kwami. "You could have told me, Plagg."

Plagg shrugged as Master Fu chuckled. "Plagg had always been a rebellious kwami. It made sense why he chose his own holder." Master Fu went on.

"I thought that you were the guardian, didn't you send Plagg to-" Hugo cut himself off. "I apologize, but, I still believe that I can prove to be worthy of the miraculous."

"I am giving you a chance, but I do believe you won't go rogue with the miraculous. That is how the villain was created." Master Fu says. He rubbed his temples. "But, I am shocked in the amount of information you were able to discover on your own."

Hugo smiled subtly. "Plagg had explained most of it, so I..." He trailed off, not used to the praise.

"Still," Master fu says. Hugo smiled widely.

Angela jumped into the room as Plagg hid in Hugo's jacket. "Miss Cunningham," Hugo says hurriedly.

"Hello, your majesty," Angela says with a smile. "Oh, and hello again." She gestured to Master Fu as he nods his head.

"Am I interrupting something?" Angela asked cautiously, noticing them not conversing anymore. "No, of course not," Hugo reassured.

"Could you go check on Louis? I think he's a bit off today." Hugo asked as Angela nodded. She scurried off as Master Fu smiled.

"She is certainly someone," he praised. Hugo chuckled. "Yes, Angela is definitely special. But, the good kind," he says, the smile still hanging onto his face as he thought of her.

Master Fu nodded. Hugo cleared his throat. "Do you want the crown jewels back?" He asked. "They were originally yours. I feel no right in keeping them from you."

"And, I am the king," Hugo added, "well, until my dad gets better." He couldn't stop the sentence in the first part. He wasn't the king. His dad was the king. He was just the prince; the powerless prince.

Angela peaked up again and tugged on his shoulder. Hugo begrudgingly followed her to a separate hall. "Yes?" He asked. The annoyance was evident in his tone, but Angela didn't care.

"Okay, so I overheard your conversation since you weren't whispering and we are practically in the same-"

"Yes, Angela?" Hugo interrupted her rambling. "Is there something wrong with our conversing?"

"I-I just heard the part that you offered to give the crown jewels to him?" She squeaked.

Hugo sighed, already anticipating the lecture he was going to get for giving them. "Yes, they are rightfully his. Why would I keep them?"

"But, you become king and the first thing you do is give away the crown jewels to a stranger!?" Angela whisper-yelled. Her tone, even when upset, still sounded like someone who was in sugar-rush.

"How do you think the people will react. How do you think your father will react! And don't even get me started on Lady Marinette." Angela continued. She then sighed deeply as Hugo crossed his arms.

"My decision on the matter is final," Hugo says. He noticed a glare was still pasted on her face. He sighed. "I have my reasons for giving them. I trust you as my assistant, you trust my word. Is that a deal?"

Angela's gaze softened. "Your mother is going to kill you." She sniped. She then mumbled that they had a deal. He smiled.

"Good," he concluded strongly. "And, my mother will have to learn to trust me as well. If she has enough trust to make me king, she needs to have enough trust that this is the right decision."

Angela and Hugo split ways. Hugo went back to the old man and sent the guards to retrieve the crown jewels. Plagg came out of his pocket once more. "If you never chose me as Monsieur Noir, what is stopping you from taking my miraculous now?" Hugo asked. He didn't dance around the subjects. He didn't work that way.

Master Fu sighed. It was a mix between a fond sigh and an annoyance one. Hugo couldn't tell which one. "Because I believe that Plagg chose a good person." Master Fu says. "And, as well, I can't take back the memories and information that you already have."

Hugo nodded stiffly. The guards handed the crown jewels to the old man. Hugo looked at them, and then looked back at the old man. "Where will you be going?" Hugo asked. Plagg was still hiding in his pocket.

"Wherever the fate takes me," Master Fu says simply. Well, this man is starting to sound nuts. Let's hope this is the right decision.

"Enjoy your journey," Hugo says with a sigh. Master Fu gives him a slight nod. "Do not worry Monsieur Noir," Master Fu says as Hugo tilts his head up.

"I-" "You will be seeing much more of me, even if we do not live in the same city." Master Fu walked off as Hugo stood there, starstruck.

"What just happened," Hugo muttered to his kwami.

"You ready for your first meeting, Your Majesty?" Angela's voice echoed.

Hugo nodded. "Yes, tell them I will be arriving shortly."

King Hugo. He thought. Doesn't have a ring to it.

So, that's the end. Hugo doesn't want to be king, and that makes sense to me XD. I mean, he'll have to be king eventually, and he's just getting a free preview :D

So, with that, stay tuned! Have a great day/night :)!
