Alternate Endings

1) Somehow, the one time that they frick-fracked led to a baby/Fionna ended up marrying someone else.

The princess Jazz watched the people scurry around, before sitting down and biting into a jam tart that she had grabbed from the Royal Kitchens. No one would find her here, tucked away in a part of the castle that no one really went into.

She heard the door open and close, and she moved underneath a table that was covered with a long white cloth to remain out of sight and out of trouble.

"What did you want to talk to me about?" Jazz heard her mother ask.

"The illegitimate child." Jazz's father replied.

"She is not illegitimate!" Fionna hissed back.

"And she is not my daughter, and I am your only husband!" Jazz guessed that they were talking about her younger sister, Desdemona. That was sad. She liked Desdemona. She liked being her sister. Would Desdemona have to go now?

"That doesn't matter. You knew I was pregnant with her, and you still married me!"

"Because I assumed we could pass the child off as mine!"

Now that was odd. Jazz couldn't remember a time without both of her parents.

"What does it matter?! Desdemona will inherit your land, Jahzara will inherit mine!" Fionna growled.

"Or she could inherit the Unknown Lands." Jazz's father snapped. "Haven't you heard? That demon is back in Duine waters."

"He told me he'd never dock in a Duine port again." Jazz finished her jam tart. Demons were interesting. She'd seen a few, and they told cool stories. It was sad that this demon wasn't coming back.

"He's obviously changed his mind! We should just appease him by letting him take the girl, or he may take you again."

"He'd never kidnap me again. And the Shadow is no place for a child."

"Really? Because yesterday, I found Jahzara hanging upside-down trying to get a tooth to fall out! She'd do amazingly on a ship!"

Jazz remembered that. It had not been fun to be yelled at, and the tooth didn't even come out! She wiggled it with her tongue a little.

"Why did you bring me in here? To talk about Marshall?"

"Because I'm afraid that you're going to let the little illegitimate demon get everything that should go to my children!"

Jazz peeked out from underneath the table. Who was he talking about, anyway? Desdemona was his favorite. He'd never be mad at her. And what did 'illegitimate' mean anyway?

"Jazz is the oldest, so she will get the crown following my death. It doesn't matter if she's not your child, it only matters if she's my child."

"You gave birth to a demon, and nothing will ever change that." Jazz's father hissed, grabbing Fionna's arm. "You gave birth to a bastard demon, and out of the goodness of my heart, I pretended that she was my child. But now you're pushing to leave your legitimate children out of the loop, and only provide for her. Jahzara is a demon, and she's always going to be a demon! She should have just been left to the wolves long ago!" Jazz frowned. Her father always used her full name, and she didn't like that. She didn't really like the idea of being left to wolves either, and it didn't sound like he was complimenting her.

Fionna tore herself away from him. "Don't you touch me, and don't you talk about Jazz like that! I won't leave Desdemona and Blake with nothing, but Jazz will be queen. But that's not for many years."

She turned to leave, but her husband caught her arm. "And what about the pirate? What will happen if he comes in to port here?"

"He won't. But if he does, I'll talk to him. He won't bother you."

Fionna watched as Marshall climbed into her room once again. "This seems familiar."

"Yeah." Marshall smiled softly. "How've you been?"

"I got married."

The mood instantly turned sour.

"Oh. I see. Any-any kids?" Marshall asked carefully.

"Yeah. Three."

"Oh."

Fionna crossed one arm over her chest. "So why are you here?"

"To repeat my offer. To whisk you off to the high seas."

"And leave Duine in his hands? I couldn't."

"Sounds like you don't have much faith in your husband."

"It was a marriage of convenience, not one of love."

Marshall smiled slightly. "There's that at least."

They were silent for a minute, then she said, "I've never stopped loving you."

"Me neither. I've been on so many adventures, to so many places, but I could never get you out of my mind."

"...I wish I could come with you, but..."

"Duine?" He asked.

"More like the Shadow would not be good for a child."

"You don't trust him with your kids?"

"I'm scared he may get rid of one of them in particular. She'll probably be fine if I stay."

"How old is she?"

"Six and a half." Fionna smiled softly. "Her name's Jazz."

Marshall nodded slowly. "So, that's it?"

"That's it."

"And there's no way you can let me stay with you, because you're married."

"Yeah."

He moved forward and kissed her gently. "Then this is goodbye? Forever?"

"I guess it is. You better go, my husband will be up here soon."

"I... yeah." He kissed her on the forehead before moving back to the window and rappelling down.

2) The Shadow going down at sea.

Water crashed over the ship as lightning crackled in the sky.

"Keep her steady!" Marshall yelled over the storm. "We have to get through this!"

Demons scuttled to and fro trying to bail the rising water, and trying to keep the ship under their control.

The ship was tossed on the waves, and the mast began to creak ominously.

"Shorten the sails! Trim the ropes!" Marshall ordered. A minute later, lightning struck the mast, bringing it down. A fire briefly began, but the rain and waves soon quelled it.

That was the least of their problems. Marshall's eyes widened as he took in the wall of water before them. "Not here. Not now. I wanted to die with her nearb—!" He was cut off before he had uttered the last word. The wave had crashed down upon them, taking the Shadow and her entire crew down to the bottom of the ocean.

"Milady? There's something you should know." A servant said.

Fionna looked up from her fencing, covered in sweat. "Yes?"

"We just received word that the Shadow went down at sea."

Fionna froze. "The-the Shadow? From the Unknown Lands?"

"Yes, milady. There were no survivors."

Fionna's sword clattered to the ground. Fionna stared at the messenger in shock. "He can't be dead... he can't be dead."

The servant bowed and left.

"He can't be dead." Fionna repeated. "I love him, he can't... Marshall can't die... he can't..."

Someone helped her upstairs to her room, where she sat on her bed, still in numb shock.

Days later, she finally snapped out of her denial. "Why was he sailing into a storm, that stupid idiot. Didn't he think about what would happen? Didn't he think about what he meant to other people?!"

Then she passed into the bargaining phase, followed by depression, followed by acceptance.

"You really want to rig up a gravestone for him? He was lost at sea, and he wasn't even from Duine."

"I'm sure." Fionna said. "A public memorial should also be brought up for all those that Duine has lost at sea, but this is just for him."

In one of the palace gardens, a small limestone gravestone was placed in the corner, engraved with, 'In honor of a fine captain, a good friend, and the love of Queen Fionna's life.'

3) Marshall stays with Fionna (so that none of us drown in our tears).

"I look stupid." Marshall grumbled as Fionna tightened his tie.

"You look great." She corrected.

"Why are you making me do this again?"

"Because you never attend any of the ceremonies, and I hate going to them by myself."

"Well, your subjects hate me. What am I getting out of this, anyway?" Marshall huffed.

Fionna grabbed his tie and pulled him into a long kiss, before whispering something into his ear.

Marshall's eyes widened. "Okay, you've got yourself a deal."

Fionna laughed, and Marshall pulled her into a long kiss. "I swear to Glob, your laugh is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard."

"I love you too." Fionna said, leaning against him.

"Shall we?"

"Let's go." She agreed as they swept into the ballroom.

4) The Original ending featuring Olivia and Gumball. Note: the Duine-Dulce marriage was still relying on Gumball/Fionna to be married.

"Marshall, I don't know if I can go with you." Fionna said uncertainly.

"Come on, Fionna. What have you got to lose?"

That was when Prince Gumball knocked on the door. "Your grace? Are you awake?"

"Um, yes, just a second."

Gumball immediately poked his head in, and his eyes widened upon seeing Marshall. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same question."

"Are you here to take this young woman's virtue?!"

"Again, same question. Also, why are you placing so much value on that?" Marshall asked.

"I— never mind that! You need to answer my question immediately!" Gumball hissed.

"If you must know, I was trying to convince her to run away with me." Marshall replied. "She can leave Duine behind, it's steady now."

"I hadn't made up my mind yet." Fionna amended. "It would be hard for me to just leave Duine."

Marshall took her hands in his. "Couldn't you do it, though? Either situation would be hard. But I need you, and you need the sea."

"Oh, for the love of—! Fionna, to address you informally, it is your duty to uphold the relation between our two nations as was already specified!"

Olivia poked her head in, before coming in fully. "Great, gang's all here. Prince Gumball, you need to go... um... look, I think someone said your palace was on fire?"

"It does not matter. While it is being rebuilt I can live in Duine."

"Right, right, right. Anyway, can you go sit outside, for like, five minutes? 'Cause that'd be great."

"I don't see why I have to be put outside while Marshall Lee—!" Olivia shoved him out the door, before taking one of Marshall's hands and one of Fionna's hands in hers.

"Alright, let's make this quick. Fionna, do you love this guy with all your heart, and for the sake of plot convenience will probably never love anyone like this again?"

"I do." Fionna said, slightly confused at the usage of 'plot convenience'.

"Marshall, same question."

"Of course I do."

"Then by the power invested in me by the fanfiction community, you are now hereby married. Boom!"

"Wait, what?" Fionna asked.

"You said 'I do', I said you're married, I am right." Olivia explained.

"Does this mean you can come with me now?" Marshall asked.

"Certainly doesn't mean she can marry Gumball." Olivia shrugged, walking out of the room. There was the sound of a scuffle outside, so presumably she made Gumball leave as well.

"Fionna, even if we don't believe the crazy woman, I like the idea of being married to you."

"I do too... I guess... I've made my choice. I'll come with you."

"And we'll believe the crazy woman?" Marshall grinned. "Or should we get married again in the next port?"

"Either one is fine." Fionna smiled.

THE TRUE ENDING: WHICH I DECIDED TO SNEAK IN AT THE END OF THE ALTERNATE ENDINGS LIKE A TROLL:

Fionna was at the helm of the Shadow as dawn broke, when someone snuck up behind her and suddenly hugged her.

She let out a small noise, and Marshall laughed. "That was the cutest sound I've ever heard, Fi."

"You scared me!" She accused, and he nodded happily. "I did. But you are supposed to be in bed."

"I'm pregnant, not sick." Fionna huffed.

"Yeah, yeah. Heard it all before. I also heard you throwing up before, so..."

"That's a natural thing." Fionna replied. "Everyone we've come across has told us so."

"Mm-hmm. People who later hated us, were trying to sell us something, or had never seen a Duine woman before."

"Well, you clearly don't believe them anyway. I assume you also want the baby to be born on the Shadow?"

"It might be. And in that case, our son is going to be the best sailor ever." Marshall said proudly. "Already less than a second into the world, and he will be on a ship."

"I'm telling you, it's going to be a girl." Fionna replied, smiling. "And she is going to be the best sailor ever, so I guess you're kind of right."

"We'll see." Marshall said. "But I'm totally going to be right about everything."

Fionna laughed. "Fine, fine. When the baby comes out a girl, you're going to eat your words."

He rested his head on top of hers. "Any sign of land yet?"

"No, but we're bound to find some soon. Are you sure no one's never explored this far west? It seems like they would have."

"After the whirlpool? No chance. Besides, Duine also didn't explore." Marshall countered. "Anyway, even if we don't find anything this way, we have enough stuff to impress everyone back home."

"Duine or your lands?" Fionna asked, smiling.

"Whoever needs impressing." Marshall grinned, before they noticed land looming up in front of them.

"Looks like we've found our next adventure." Fionna commented.

"Hopefully this won't go as badly as it did last time."

"Hopefully? That only happened because of you deciding that we should take the Shadow up against a water-dragon." Fionna laughed.

Marshall smirked, before pulling her closer. "I think you had something to do with it too, Miss Dragon Slayer."

"How did I know they actually liked the thing?" Fionna replied, on the edge of laughing again.

Marshall kissed her deeply. "My wonderful Fi... I love you so much."

"I love you too."

Soon, the Shadow was anchored and they went ashore. It was a very sandy beach, and Marshall frowned at it, raising his boots to better scrutinize them.

"Worried you'll get it in your boots?" Fionna asked.

"Laugh all you want, but sand in your shoes is terrible." Marshall sighed.

Fionna leaned against him. "Believe me, I'm not laughing. You always get crabby with beaches."

"Well, the sun can literally kill me, so..." He planted a kiss on her collarbone, walking with her.

The beaches soon turned to green forests, with a thick canopy. "Does anyone live here?" Marshall asked, taking off his hat.

"Doesn't look like it."

"Great, new colony for us then. Awesome." He picked an apple from a tree, and handed it to Fionna, before picking another for himself. "Mm... more access to apples."

"It's easier to get them from Duine." She smiled, before looking around at the trees. "It's odd... I thought apples only grew on Duine."

They walked a little farther before they came across a circle of stones covered in moss. Some of the stones were clearly broken.

"What happened here...?" Marshall asked.

Fionna frowned and drew her sword. "I don't think we should step inside the circle."

"Why? Are you scared?" Marshall teased.

"There are circles like this in Duine. That's where the fairies are supposed to live. I've never seen one broken before..."

"Fairies?" Marshall scoffed. "That's all in your head."

"Says the vampire-demon hybrid." Fionna replied. "The Duine are said to be descended from the fairies. The apples, the circle... the Duine were here, Marshall."

He turned to her, not noticing the creature peeking out behind the top of one of the rocks, which eyes like burning coals and long sharp nails. "Okay, so the Duine were here. But you didn't know about this island."

"I think I might... there's an old legend about a sister island of Duine, called Siog..." She trailed off, noticing the creature.

"And you believe it?" Marshall asked.

"Turn around slowly. One of the creatures is there."

As Marshall turned, the creature lunged, baring disproportionately long fangs. Marshall quickly ducked, and Fionna slashed. The creature ran away into the forest, shooting a quick glare back at them before disappearing.

"What was that?!" Marshall demanded.

"It was never really given a name in the legend. It is just used to scare little children." Fionna answered. "Come on. We have to leave this place."

"Why? Can you at least sit me down and tell me?" Marshall asked.

Fionna hesitated, before nodding.

"Long ago, this island was filled with prosperity. The people of Duine were in awe of the glittering fairy courts and the fairies themselves. Then one of the Duine killed a fairy over a disagreement, and a war erupted. The fairies changed themselves and created new problems to wage war on Duine. Eventually, it was believed that either party destroyed the island— the fairies in an attempt to keep the Duine from getting their valuables, or Duine to win the war. Evidently I was wrong."

"So what kind of creatures are on here?"

"That thing, banshees, the dearg due which you can talk to, since it's a kind of vampire, the fairies which steal children, and apparently a dark force that rules them."

Marshall's eyes dropped to her abdomen. "They steal children?"

"Not from the womb, Marshall."

"Still... I don't think we need to leave though."

"They will try to trick us and break us apart. They don't want the Duine here at all." Fionna warned.

"Fine. You go back to the ship, the crew can come ashore."

"Marshall, I refuse to leave you alone out here. I don't think they distinguish between intruders anymore."

"I think they don't have intruders anymore. We're something of a novelty to them." Marshall said, planting a kiss on the inside of her wrist.

Fionna pulled her arm away slowly. "There will be time for that later. What's your plan, anyway?"

"It's simple. We forge a path to the dark force that rules them, and try to add them to our growing list of alliances, trade with him, or be run off the island. Or both."

Fionna smiled. "Well, at least you have an idea of what we're doing."

"Mm-hmm. C'mon, Fi. No one's going to hurt you while you're with me."

Fionna laced her fingers with his, keeping her sword in her other hand. "Whatever you do, don't lose sight of me." She warned.

"Never." Marshall promised as they began to walk into the thicker part of the forest.
