Choosing a path (4/11)

He looked over the edge of the roof, seeing and smelling no guard, so he landed on a small balcony. There was a trailing plant over the wall next to it and it had nice blossom. He smelled it, taking long inhales.

"Do you like climbing roses?" asked him Reagan who was standing in the glass door.

The small demon tensed up, hiding his head a bit. "Roses?"

The man nodded with a smile. "Yes, my ancestors were fascinated with roses and they cultivated several kinds of them. And this is the one that earned us the surname Rose since it was the first kind of wall climbing rose the world had ever witnessed." There was a pride in his voice.

"It smells nice," he admitted. The reddish hedgehog walked to the stone fence looking around. "It's alright," said the demon, "no guards are nearby."

"I see, you can smell them, correct?" The small demon nodded, his eyes were moving widely around, never focusing on one place longer than a second. "Am I making you nervous?"

Eclipse looked at him, silently answering: "A bit."

"Is it because my daughter is your master now and you are worried any mistake towards us will result in a punishment?"

The answer came in a form of head tugged between shoulders. The man knelt, petting the small demon. "It's strange to see a demon to be so anxious, but it's understandable." The brown eyes fell on the collar. "May I touch it?" Instead of a reply, the demonic child stretched its neck.

Two hands examined the smooth surface, not finding a single roughness. "It seems it's made of one piece." He cocked his head to get a better angle. "Do you know what material it is made from?" He put his hands away.

"No, I couldn't even scratch it," he mumbled his eyes wandering inside of the office glancing something interesting.

That didn't escape Reagan's ones. "Do you want to look inside?" He stepped toward the door inviting the other. The small demon slowly entered. The room was quite big, bigger than Amy's room. There was a wide and long carpet under the heavy table having brown and beige flower-like pattern. He as well noticed many bookshelves but the object catching his attention was a big paper picture on the wall.

"It's a nice map, isn't it?" Mr. Rose stood next to it feeling proud.

"A map? What it is?" He was just a few steps away.

"Is this your first time seeing one?" The other pondered about it a bit, before shaking the head and shrugging shoulders. "In short, a map is a drawing showing where important places are." He touched one spot. "Here we are in the Rosemary City." The name of the dot was written in nice flowery text, meaning Eclipse had a harder time to read it. The man continued: "We use maps to navigate in terrain, knowing which way to go to move forward to one's goal."

"But there are so many paths to choose," demurred the small demon. "How do you know which one is the right one?"

"For that, we have a tool know as a compass." He walked to the desk, opened a drawer and brought back a small flat and round object. Inside of it was a long arrow with one tip being red constantly spinning. "The biggest letters stands for north, south, west, and east. These are the four basic cardinal directions."

He then showed him how it works, going into deeper details and showing him what might lies in which direction. The demon child was fascinated by it. Happily trying to find which way is what direction. When he was having the most fun, someone knocked on the door. The small demon bristled, quickly leaving thru the balcony.

"Come in," called the reddish hedgehog.

It was the cat butler, who entered. "Sir, I would like to inform you the lunch is ready to be served per your instructions." He was slightly bowing.

"Yes, thank you," he nodded in acknowledgment and the man left.

He then called Eclipse, guiding him to a small outdoor saloon where the lunch was served. The maids and servants only brought the meals and dishes leaving the actual serving to the lady as she asked for it. They all sit around a round table from whitish wood and the nearby trees provided nice shades.

During the sitting the small demon realized his wings weren't truly suited for normal chairs as he was constantly moving with them, trying to find a proper position without feeling stiff. Mr. Regan, who was sitting next to him, noted in his mind the next meal they will need something else for him.

Amy started to tell them about her escape and how she had met Mr. Shadow and Sonic, that led to the kidnapping and meeting with Eclipse. There she had to stop, unsure how to phrase it, but it was her familiar demon, who silently spoke these words: "I have attacked her." He didn't dare to look into their eyes.

Adeline showed a visible shock, but it was quickly gone. How else could they meet after all?

"It wasn't that bad," the pink lass quickly tried to soften it. "I have actually bit him into forearm a lot."

Her father nodded, signaling he would love to hear the rest of the story. She was glad her parents weren't dwelling on it, letting it be in the past. They had a lot of questions about her ability to see souls and how she knew Eclipse's name, but she had only vague answers.

The story as well confirmed for Mr. Rose the priest's credibility. Their daughter made sure the story from the cellar was softened a bit and she omitted some details, but they had gotten the overall picture. When she finished it with describing the interrupted lunch by captain Knuckles, it was more than two hours after the meal started.

"I see your girl had more adventures in a few days than I had my whole life," noted with a smile her father.

"Don't say it like it was stress-free," rebuked him his wife a bit, but there was a playful spark in her blue eyes.

"I know," he dropped his ears a bit.

"Mother, father," Amy interrupted them. "I suppose you know what will come next."

Their faces turned sad. "Yes," said the father.

"Can't we... get a home tutor for you regarding it?" asked with a hope lady Adeline.

"I know how you feel. It makes me sad too."

"Dear," Mr. Rose gently rubbed his wife's cheeks with the back of his hand. "Our daughter has grown up, let her spread wings."

She accepted his hand, softly pressing it. "I know. I just wish it could be closer to us."

"Don't worry," the pink lass looked at Eclipse, "I won't be alone."

Mr. Reagan then started to discuss the details concerning her departure. But it wasn't just in this mansion where a big decision was made. A certain blue child was thinking about his own path too, but getting the courage to speak about it after the midday meal.

He followed the tenrec to the kitchen, where Shadow was unwilling to let her do the dishes, so she had no choice but to leave it to him. "Miss Gold," he called her as she ventured into the living room. "Can I have a question?"

"But of course," she sat down on the sofa and the boy took the seat next to her.

"Why am I so fast?" he looked into her blue eyes. She had no idea what to answer, but there was more he wanted to say. "Yesterday, I ran... but... it felt strange..."

"Was it unpleasant?" she quickly asked afraid he might be starting to experience some physical pain connected to an enormous strain on his small body.

The blue hedgehog shook his head. "No, it was just... I had no idea what I'm running for."

"I see. You don't know what you can do with your gift." The tenrec understood him well. When she discovered the ability to read other people minds, she was shocked and scared. It caused her many scars and nightmares and she eventually closed her heart, running from one place to another.

"I have seen some kids," he slowly continued, looking at his slightly swinging legs. "They were happy they got faster, yet there was no reason for them to become better at running. It was just a game for them."

"Tell me, why did you want to be fast in the first place?"

His eyes widen and he turned his head towards her. "Why?" She nodded and he averted his eyes, thinking. "I wished... I wanted to run to my parents... I wanted to find them," he silently whispered. "But now they are gone."

"You feel empty because you had lost your reason to run." He replied with a murmured yes. "I wonder, why can I read other people minds?" His ears perked up seeing she was looking at the ceiling. "To find secrets? To dig up a dirt? Or to find lost souls and guide them?" She shrugged her shoulders, turning the head down. "Till now, I have no idea, but it's inside of me. I can't deny it. It's the part of who I am." She sighed. "I feel like I haven't answered your question that well."

"How do you become an agent of The Order?" he suddenly inquired.

"You... want to be one of the agents?" Her body twitched a bit.

He nodded. "My mom and dad were ones, right? So... I want to follow in their steps. My speed... it may help somebody." He remembered both Amy's rescues, and it was only possible thanks to his speed.

"I see you are determinate. Let me tell you this, being an agent isn't easy. It's really hard."

"I'll make it!" he clenched his fists.

"Alright, I'll---" she stopped as she noticed Silver, who was standing in the door frame.

He was smirking a bit, rubbing his chin and having one of his cheeky grins. It was obvious he had heard them. "Well, well, I was just about to propose it."

"Were you?" she cocked her head and lifted a right eyebrow.

He answered with his own eyebrow. "I'll make the call," he simply said. "Enjoy your childhood, it will be over soon," the psychic added, leaving them. Tho it was harsh such was the truth. He left the house, heading to the branch office to use the phone.
