Choosing a path (10/11)
The psychic slowly grabbed his head, shaking it. This couldn't be real. His face full of terror. "No... No..." he slowly chanted before his expression brightened up as a sudden thought hit him. "I see. This is your joke, right? You mentioned it's such a nice day. I know!! I was abusing my power, right? I used it to hold the night train! This is my punishment, right?" He slightly laughed, showing he wasn't thinking in a normal way and his body movements were showing it too. "I admit it! You got me! Totally! I'm totally losing my cool here. So let's stop here? Okay?"
However, the man's face was serious and exorcist's silent laughter died. "No, Silver, I'm not joking. My ancestor Maximilian together with Big founded The Order to protect our people."
The purple cat nodded, speaking: "Ah, demons are noise, they scare fishes." He looked at Eclipse who was blankly staring back. Who was this demon?
Nigel smiled, adding to the previous sentence: "And to allow them to enjoy fishing in a peace."
If the psychic could look whiter, then now was the best chance for it. "A demon... The Order..." his brain stopped functioning. Was everything... a lie?
Gold, who tried to control her emotions, was equally lost. She never tried to read her boss' mind, but as of now... she wanted to know the truth. It wasn't like this was her first time meeting Big. They had met on a few occasions... each one leaving her puzzled by who this strange fellow was. Was his case similar to Shadow's one? Somehow... she doubted it... since... Big seemed to be... ugh, her brain refused to work too.
Her ear twitched like she had heard some silent sound. It might have been just an illusion but her eyes trailed to Eclipse seeing his nose to be puckered. He must have been picking the smell coming from the cat demon. No surprise, even the most cold-blooded person would be shocked. The medium sensed Amy's thoughts and based on the feel, she was confused but somewhat happy, knowing this way her familiar had a much better chance being with her.
Her blue eyes flashed toward her boss since it seemed he was about to talk. "But let's put all jokes aside, I shall tell you a secret history of The Order that's only passed from direct descended to its first child." He cleared his throat, continuing.
"My ancestor Maximilian... let's just call him Max... was born in a small village. At that period there were just wild groups of people getting hired to protect others. I don't need to tell you that most of them were fakes and charlatans.
Time in that village flowed slowly and he was fishing as usual, when Big approached him, curious about what he was doing. Max was naturally terrified because he had realized Big was a demon, so he rather answered him, being afraid not doing so might result in his death.
However, to his surprise, the big scary demon turned out to be rather an easygoing person. Soon he found himself to be curious about him as the conversation continued in a friendly manner.
He kept it a secret and continued to meet with him at the same spot. Soon he realized Big was a nice person and meant no harm. One night they went fishing as always, just enjoying the view of the moon and stars, listening to night sounds and Max was telling him stories from his childhood. At that moment he noticed his village was attacked by demons.
He rushed back, hoping to find his family safe and to aid others in the battle. When he had arrived he wielded his fishing rod successfully dragging a small demon away. But of course, such action couldn't change the way the fight would go. If it wasn't for Big to step in, all of them would be lost. Thanks to that action, the casualties were minimized and many lives were saved. From the unlikely friendship formed a strong bond based on mutual respect that leads us to the present." He finished his short story, looking at the people present.
"Such event..." Gold had a hard time to speak. It was so unimaginable. Who would have thought there could be a kindhearted demon? What could cause this change or was he like this from the beginning?
His Holiness continued: "I'm sure you understand if this information leaves this room, it will cause disaster."
"People would lose all trust in The Order," said Sonic for the first time in a long while. He had a hard time digesting all of this like everybody else.
"Not just that," added Amy glancing at the boy and then back at the head of The Order. "It would cause mass panic."
"The consequences would be eternal," added his own Shadow. A demon in the service of Order was definitely more acceptable than knowing a demon actually founded it.
"I assure you, your Holiness," the tenrec agent bowed saying in a firm voice: "Nobody in this room shall reveal this secret." The rest followed her example, promising they won't reveal a thing.
"I believe in all of you," his eyes especially fell on Eclipse. The small demon shivered. Even if this person was hiding his true aura, he could smell he was exceptionally dangerous... maybe even more than Shadow. "This has been a long day," he clapped and from side doors hidden behind a curtain walked a chipmunk woman. "Sally, please show them their rooms."
The woman looked at the bigger demon and he... blushed, mumbling an apology for not being properly clothed. His hectic movements to get the cross and clothes back resulted in Amy's snickering and the tenrec followed soon enough, making an additional blush appear on the tip of ebony ears.
"As you wish, father," she slightly bowed, waiting for the priest to finish clothing himself, before guiding them thru the HQ.
Once they left Nigel started to think. Only he and his daughter knew about a certain aspect of this place... and that was making him seriously worried... or not? He quickly returned behind the desk, opening the drawer and taking out a thin book. He kept reading it while he asked his demon friend, who with a puff of a smoke returned to his normal form. "What do you think about that second demon?" Let's start with a simple question.
"Eh? What the second demon?" He looked down and the squirrel man up.
"I'm talking about Eclipse, the one bounded to miss Amy." Tho his friend wasn't dumb, he still had moments when it was hard to follow his thinking process.
"Ah, that one... he isn't a demon," the big cat walked to the window, looking outside.
Nigel quickly glanced into that book and back, before following him to the big window. "What do you mean? He looks just like a demon. Many of my agents reported similar looking creatures," and as far as he can remember, they were always fighting with similar looking beasts. He personally checked him a bit, sensing the demonic aura around the small body.
Big looked at him and the other could tell there was a knowing spark in those blank eyes, but it was quickly gone. "He is just like a fish bread... it isn't a fish even if it's shaped like one." He tilted his head. "Let's go fishing, can we?"
Nigel sighed. Big won't tell him anything else whether he knew more or not. "Me too, Big, but I have a feeling something big will happen in a near future. And these young ones may have a big role in it." He returned to the desk, resuming the reading process.
He was interrupted when his daughter Sally returned, giving him the report. "I have made sure to accommodate them in separate rooms so you can visit them privately later."
"Thank you, what a good insight from you." He leaned back in his spinning chair. "What do you think of them?"
There was only a moment of hesitation before she had spoken: "The boy and the girl are amazing. Both will provide huge assets toward The Order in the future. But regarding that third person..." he could tell she was having mixed feelings, "I'm not sure if it's wise to let him roam free. I understand he is cooperating with us however, he is still a demon."
Her father nodded. "I agree, but there is something about him... that doesn't sum up."
"Do you mean that is some deliberate attempt to gain a spy here?" Her hands moved representing the ridiculousness of such open action especially when spies were supposed to be... secret.
"That's the thing. Let's observe him for a while." He glanced down at the book. "Sally, do you know what seals protect Albion City?"
She winked in a confusion. "Of course, father. Do you want me to list them?"
Her father shook head. "No, I'm just thinking... something is strange here." He stood up. "Come with me, let's check on the defense team."
She followed him, hurriedly thinking about all the inscriptions that were laid by their ancestors and members of The Order alike. Was she forgetting one? How could she? How shameful! After a few minutes, they entered the underground that led them to hidden rooms. Most of them were only having round seals on the ground but their arrangement was unusual.
The central chamber was the biggest one and had several smaller ones around itself being connected by corridors and being guarded and equipped with several doors. Nigel used his friendly smile, greeting the employees there and having a small chat with them while asking about the state of the seals and what not. Nothing strange was reported and so they left, returning to the main office. Once the door was closed his face turned serious.
"Father," spoke his daughter, "were you checking on the inscriptions because neither of them reacted on that priest?" He looked at her and with a small smile he nodded. "I should have noticed it!" She clenched her fists. Neglecting her duty to protect this place!
"Do you know why my ancestor Maximilian founded The Order here?" he asked after a while giving her the book he was reading before.
She took it in her hands recognizing the copy of Maximilian's diary. She was sure, she had read this book countless time to engrave each word into her brain, but she opened it at a certain page since there was a small bookmark sticking out. Her eyes carefully read these words and then she felt a sudden thought hit her... but that was impossible.
"Father, I... I understand our ancestor found this place based on a dream where a golden woman told him to do so. It was a miracle and a sign of a better future for humans." He nodded encouraging her to continue. "And there was already a powerful circle being prepared and..." she bit her lip, "... it's impossible for that man to manifest so much demonic energy without activating it."
He caught his chin tapping the index finger. "And that's what is interesting about him too." He looked back at his furry friend, who was now sitting by the window looking at the people outside. "Even Big isn't affected by it, but I guess it may be because his energy level is so low," then again... he wasn't sure about it, there was a big chance his true power was just lying dormant. He continued: "In any case, I suggest to watch him, I already have a plan and a guard for him." He snickered a bit. This will be a very interesting duo.
