Chapter 7: Impossibility
Amon's POV
I step through the portal, holding Milo in my arms. As I reach the other side, I feel cold air breeze over my skin and shiver. The cold air feels suffocating, and my body tenses up.
Snow is lying on the ground, and it's freezing. A small cottage is standing a bit away, looking very lonely in this landscape of ice and nothingness.
I quickly walk up to it, but before I can knock on the door, a woman, presumably in her forties, opens the door and looks at me.
"You seek my help, don't you?", she asks.
I nod, a few tears still slowly streaming down my cheeks.
"Come on in."
We enter the house. It's only two rooms, one is probably the bathroom, and the other one has a kitchen, a bed, a table with a few chairs and a couch.
"Put him on the couch." I very carefully put him down. She turns to me. "What is your name, young man?"
I gulp because I'm still crying, and it's so hard to stop right now. "A-Amon."
Her eyes widen. "Amon?"
I nod and sniff.
She steps closer and takes my hands, looking at them more closely. "You defeated Azrael," she mutters, more to herself than to me.
I just look back at her. She lets go of my hands. "What happened? Who is he? He looks so familiar..."
"His name is Milo," I reply weakly.
She looks at me, surprised. "Milo? Oh, no... Fiona... Why is your boy here? This can't be good..."
I'm a little confused about all this. I guess I'm just gonna ignore it. I have more pressing matters.
"Can you help him, please?" I ask, my voice shaking.
"What happened?"
"T-they used the morsus curse on him."
She looks shocked. "Was that the first time it was used on him?"
I shake my head, more tears rolling down my cheeks. "The third."
She stares at me and then at Milo. She gulps visibly. "Who used it on him?"
"Azrael once and Caspian twice."
She stares at me. "Caspian? Caspian tortured Milo?"
I nod.
"Caspian and Azrael... They..." She sits down on the bed. Then she looks up at me. "They're two of the most powerful sorcerers, Amon. I'm sorry, I... I won't be able to undo what they've done. I'm powerful, but not that powerful."
I look at her? What? No, no, that can't be true.
"There has to be a way, please," I beg, almost sobbing by now.
She looks at me with a sad look. "I'm sorry, Amon. It's... It's impossible."
I stare at her for a few seconds, desperately trying to find a way out of this. I feel light-headed. I hold on to a chair so I won't pass out.
"You know about Ares' Key right?" I ask her.
"Of course. I don't know where it is now, though."
"That's because it's destroyed," I reply, "I destroyed it when I killed Azrael."
She looks back at me. "That's impossible."
"Exactly. It was impossible, but I did it. So maybe... Maybe I can save Milo. I need to try. I... I can't lose him."
Calypso looks at me for a few seconds. "Might as well try," she says quietly.
I take a trembling breath and wipe away tears. Calypso starts explaining the movements of the spell and what words I have to say. It's all Latin.
"Are you ready?" she asks me after explaining everything.
I nod. She hands me the paper on which she's written what I have to say out loud.
I take a deep breath. I step up to Milo and lift my hand. I start moving it slowly and say the spell out loud.
"In summa esse quod factum est autem verba in quas maledicta congessi."
I let the paper fall to the floor as I use my second hand as well, the purple glow emerging from both of them.
I can feel the energy and electricity pulse through my veins, and I feel a burning pain in my arms. I bite my teeth together and put in all my power.
It needs to work. I need him.
Suddenly, there's a small blast, and I stumble back and fall down. Purple smoke fills the room, and I cough as I get up again.
I hear coughing from someone else, but it doesn't sound like Calypso. When the smoke clears up, I see Milo sitting up, still coughing.
I rush up to him and kneel down next to him, tears streaming down my face.
"Milo," I say softly.
He stops coughing and looks over at me, confused, breathing heavily.
"What just happened?" he asks me.
I carefully touch his face, just wanting to make sure he's actually awake and I'm not just dreaming.
"Are you okay? Are you in pain?" I ask, still squishing his face.
He looks back at me, still confused. "My chest hurts a little."
"Give him this," Calypso says and hands me a glass with a pinkish liquid in it. I give it to Milo, and he drinks it. Then he exhales deeply.
"Better," he mumbles, and I smile softly.
I'm so glad he's awake. God, I love him so much.
"Where's Caspian?"
"He left. I think he got scared of me."
Milo raises his eyebrows. "Woah. I've never seen Caspian scared of anyone or anything before."
I don't reply. I just look back at him.
"Who is that?" He asks.
She steps closer and smiles a bit. "My name is Calypso. I'm a healer. I knew your mother, Fiona."
Milo looks at her, surprised. "Oh. Thank you for healing me."
"Oh, I didn't heal you. I'm not powerful enough. He did." She points at me, and I smile softly at my boyfriend.
He looks surprised. "You did?"
I nod. "I have no idea how I did it, but... I had to try."
He smiles at me. "Gosh, I'm so proud of you. Thank you."
I smile back. "Thank you. I love you so much."
He chuckles. "I love you too."
I realize that Calypso is observing us smiling. "Oh, young love. Something so beautiful."
We both blush a little.
"Oh, hey, I need to call Sophia. I told her I'd keep her posted. She's worried about you."
"Right," Milo mutters.
I dial and put the call on speaker. But she doesn't answer.
"She's probably busy," I say, and Milo nods. I take his hands. "Let's go back to Mike's place."
"Can we go there? Is it safe?"
I frown. "I think so. I think Caspian is more scared of me than I am of him. I think temporarily, we're safe."
He nods. "Okay. Let's renew the protection spells, though."
"Sounds good to me."
I help him up. He seems a little bit dizzy, and I need to make sure he doesn't collapse.
We turn to Calypso. "Thank you for your help. I couldn't have done it without you," I say.
She smiles. "It's been an honor, Amon. The whole world owes you a favor anyway. Thank you for everything you've done, both of you. And make sure Caspian gets what he deserves, okay? I never really liked him, but I didn't think he was that bad."
"You know him?" Milo asks her.
"I used to be in The Crimson Coven too, you know. But it all got too much when my husband died. That was at the same time your father died, Milo. They were killed on the same day. And I still don't know why or who did it. I couldn't stay at the coven. Too many memories..." She glances off for a second. "So, I came here. From time to time, I have visitors, like you, who seek my help."
"I'm sorry about that," Milo says quietly.
She nods. "It's alright. One day, I hope I can figure out what happened back then."
Milo nods. "Me too. Thank you for everything."
She smiles. "You're welcome. I'm sure we will meet again someday. Take care."
"We will," I say with a soft smile, "bye."
We leave her house. My hand is resting on Milo's shoulder. "Can you walk?"
"I think so."
We walk through the snow and eventually through the portal. We arrive at the house again and then get into the car.
I take a deep breath before I start driving. "I was so scared I would lose you", I say quietly.
Milo looks over at me. "I think I'm immortal if I have someone like you by my side, huh?"
I chuckle. "Well, I would go to the end of the world for you, so..."
He smiles softly. "You're the greatest thing that ever happened to me, d'you know that?"
I chuckle and blush a bit. "That might be the cutest thing someone has ever said to me."
"Well, it's true."
"Thank you," I reply softly, "I love you a lot."
"I love you more."
"Shut up, that's impossible," I reply, and he laughs.
"Whatever. I love you the most."
I roll my eyes and smile. I'm so glad he's okay.
