Chapter 6: Progress

Milo's POV

Two weeks have passed since Amon arrived in the coven. He's is learning new things every day and he's doing great. He's definitely special. He's learning so fast and can already do so much.

I'm around him a lot. When he's not training or learning, we've been spending time together and talking a lot and we get along very well.

He's a great person. He seems a bit self-conscious, which is sad because he's very kind and talented.

And... I think I'm kinda developing feelings for him. Romantic feelings. But I know it's my job to look out for him and make sure he doesn't get distracted from the mission, so I definitely can't tell him.

So I just have to ignore these kinds of feelings and the butterflies in my stomach whenever I'm talking to him and he's smiling at me.

Something about the colors fascinated me. His color is purple. No one here has purple. The last person whose color was a shade of purple was my mother. So seeing this kind of glow again... It made me feel emotional. I felt connected to him.

Today, Philo is gonna teach Amon attacking spells.

"Are you excited?", I ask him as we're walking to the training room.

"Yeah, but also scared", he replies chuckling.

"Don't worry, you'll be fine. She is gonna take it easy on you at first."

"At first, yeah", he adds mumbling and we both laugh.

"I'm sure you'll do great. You've been doing amazing so far."

He smiles softly. "Thank you."

"No need to thank me, it's true. Ask anyone!"

I think he's blushing a bit, but he's trying to hide it by looking away. Gosh, he's just so cute. Damn it, Milo. You need to stop. Why couldn't he be a girl or not my type, so I wouldn't have to deal with this?

We reach the training room where Philo and Sophia are already waiting, talking to each other, and laughing about something.

"A wonderful morning to you guys", I say as we enter and they smile.

"Morning, guys", Sophia replies.

Philo turns to Amon. "Today is a big day, huh?"

"Yeah, I hope I don't fuck up too badly", he mutters and we all chuckle.

"You won't", Philo replies softly and puts a hand on his shoulder.

I know Amon is making jokes about it because he's scared. He's just trying to mask his fear and nervousness with humor. And that's something I understand very well, I do that too sometimes. There are worse coping mechanisms than humor, I suppose.

Sophia pushes me playfully. "Ready to train?"

"Yeah."

I smile at Amon encouragingly one more time before walking a bit away to train. We start shooting spells at each other. They're basically just balls filled with energy. Depending on what you want to do, you can use different attacks, including things like fire or electricity. But we're not using them in here, we don't wanna burn something or disturb Philo and Amon while they're training.

I hear Philo explain everything to Amon and I have to focus so I don't get distracted. After a while, Amon tries to do attacking spells. It seems to take him a few tries, but that's more than normal.

Then I hear Philo deflecting an attack. "Hey, well done! Try it again!"

For a second, I look over to Amon and watch how he's producing an attack. I notice his blue eyes glowing purple as he puts all his power forward to throw the force at Philo. Woah. Philo produces a shield to protect herself.

Meanwhile, I don't pay attention and one of Sophia's attacks hits me in the chest, causing me to fall onto my back. I groan in pain.

"You alright?", she asks me.

I hold myself back from cursing because you're very much discouraged from doing that here, but sometimes it does slip. "Yeah, I'm fine." I get up again and realize that all three of them are looking at me.

While Sophia and Philo have smiles on their faces because they know it's not that bad, Amon genuinely looks concerned.

I quickly smile at him to make sure he knows I'm okay. Then I wipe the dust off my pants and turn back to Sophia.

"Sorry, I zoned out."

"Yeah, I noticed", she replies with a weird smirk on her face, but I decide to just ignore it.

We train a bit more before we all go back to our rooms and shower. Afterward, Amon and I meet up again to have lunch together.

"I mean there are things I miss about my old life, but the food is here is really fucking good", Amon says as he shoves a spoon of mashed potatoes into his mouth.

I chuckle. "That's true, it's the best", I reply and he smiles at me. "What did you usually eat?", I ask him.

He laughs a little. "Uhm, well, whatever was in my budget. It wasn't that bad recently, but right after moving out, I was pretty much living off ramen noodles."

I look back at him confused. "What's that?"

He raises his eyebrows. "Don't tell me you've never had ramen noodles before?"

"No", I reply, "Never heard of it."

He shakes his head. "Unacceptable, we gotta get you some ramen one day."

I laugh softly. "Sounds good to me."

We look at each other for a few seconds before both looking back at our plates. God, he makes me nervous. His piercing blue eyes, his pretty smile... fuck. I'm really falling for the man I'm supposed to look out for. This isn't' good at all. Oh, god.

Another two weeks pass and Amon is getting good at both defending and attacking. He's making amazing progress and I'm incredibly proud of him.

I expected him to be good after hearing the prophecy, but it's still so fascinating how fast he's learning. Philo was right, he does have incredible power inside of him.

I really believe that he will be the key to defeating the Onyx Coven.

We're at dinner and Amon is telling me all about the high school he went to. I have no idea what that is like since I grew up and got taught everything in the coven.

"And I swear, people are the biggest assholes there", he says and I chuckle.

"Sounds lovely", I reply smiling.

"Oh, totally. I didn't have the money to go to college so I just got a job and I honestly don't regret it."

"Is college that expensive?"

He laughs a bit bitterly. "Buddy, you have no idea..."

I smile. "I'm gonna be honest, I don't know much about money. Most things here get regulated for you."

He chuckles. "Do you know about taxes?"

I chuckle too. "Not really. All of that gets done for me, you know. I guess looking at all that, I'm kinda spoiled."

"I mean, but on the other hand you had to fight, right?"

"Well, not yet, I..." I bite my lip. "They wouldn't let me. They said I was too young." I frown, thinking back to the argument I had with my mother before the fight. I gulp and try not to think about it.

It's quiet for a few seconds. Suddenly, we hear someone entering the hall. We look up and see that it's Caspian.

He makes a swift hand movement to create a megaphone.

"Attention, everyone. The Onyx Coven is planning to attack the Sapphire Coven in a few hours. Everyone that is capable of fighting, gear up now."

People start getting up from the table. Amon and I exchange a look and I see the terror in his eyes.

"D-do I have to...?"

I nod. "I think so."

He takes a trembling breath.

"Milo! Amon!"

We look up.

Philo and Sophia walk up to us. "Come with us."

I take a deep breath. I'm very nervous. I know I've been trained for this, but this is the first fight I'm gonna be in. As we're following the two women, I look over at Amon.

He looks terrified. He's pale and looks so young, like a child in the war. It breaks my heart to see him like that.

We walk into a room. They hand something to us.

"Put this on. It's armor", Sophia says.

We both nod and then quickly change. A bit later, Sophia and Philo get back, also geared up.

"Let's go", Philo says.

We walk through the corridor pretty quickly. Amon turns to me.

"Wh-what is gonna happen now? Where are we going?"

"I'm not entirely sure where the fight is happening."

He gulps visibly. We leave the building and see several black cars waiting there for us.

"Are we gonna drive there with cars?", Amon asks me.

"Not all the way. You'll see in a bit", I reply and force myself to smile at him a little to make him feel better.

He just nods and I think he's shaking a little.

God, I just hope it all works out. He's only been in training for about a month. And he's doing great, don't get me wrong, but the people we're fighting against have years and years of experience.

I'm just worried about him. I don't want anything to happen to him. Not just because he is our last hope, but also because I really care about him.
