"You sure you want to join this sports club?" Lucky asked Shaurya skeptically.
Shaurya looked up from wrapping his hands with a wrap. "Yeah. Why?"
"No, I mean it is a sports club and-"
"Relax," Shaurya said as he tested the punching bag. "They have ensured complete privacy. Heck! even cell phones aren't allowed on the premises."
"But-"
"There are richer and more affluent people that are members of this club, so just get off my back and let me focus."
"Okay." Lucky shrugged his shoulders and sat on the bench. He rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a bag of chips.
"Seriously? Put those away and come workout with me." Shaurya ordered.
"Hell no. I am the manager. I can't let your fans get confused about who they should crush on. You know between you and me."
Shaurya shook his head and continued with his workout. Punching the bag again and again. The slight pain in his knuckles and adrenaline flowing through his veins, helping the pent up frustration. Yesterday's events kept playing in his mind, making him beat the bag even harder.
Lucky watched with a little amusement as Shaurya beat the life out of the punching bag for a while.
"You are doing great, man." Lucky cheered from the bench. His mouth was full of chips. "Keep it up and damage this bag. Soon they will kick us out of this club, and then I won't have to drag myself here."
Shaurya paid no attention to Lucky's taunts and continued handing out his harsh ministrations to the bag.
"Shaurya!" Lucky pulled away from the bag when he noticed Shaurya's knuckles beginning to bleed slightly. "Stop it!"
This time Shaurya did stop. He went and sat on the bench in a huff. Poping the cap of his water bottle, he chugged down the water.
"You want to talk about it?"
"Talk about what?" Shaurya snapped, still messily drinking water.
"About your behaviour, Shaurya," Lucky said irritably. "Who told you to go to Dhvani's office yesterday when I explicitly told you that she had already sent me the details."
"I had questions." Shaurya lied.
"Then you should have let me know. I don't understand why you had to go there directly?"
Shaurya opened his mouth to lie some more, but he couldn't think of anything to say, so he just closed his eyes and rested the back of his head against the wall, thinking about Lucky's question.
Why did he go there in the morning? He didn't need to go there at all. He had all the information he needs, but he still went there.
He had liked Rajveer when they began talking, but as soon as he saw him flirting with Dhvani, he wanted to do nothing more than wipe that smile off his face. The entire party, he had not once left his side or taken his arm off her shoulder. What the hell was up with that?
Did Dhvani like that? He wondered. Not even when he and Dhvani were a couple, did they stick to each other like that.
'Maybe they are a couple' Shaurya thought. 'Great! Here she had so easily moved on, and he was struggling to mend his broken heart.'
Damn! Why the hell was giving her this power over him. Even after all these years. When she sneezed, he wanted to yell at her for getting wet in the rain.
Shaurya ignored the way Lucky looked at him. "Don't do it. I don't want to talk about it."
"Fine!" Lucky sat in front of the bench in front of Shaurya and stretched his legs out in front of him. "You know you still love her. Right?"
"Lucky" Shaurya warned. Just as he was about to rebuke him some more, a young boy ran into the room.
Both Lucky and Shaurya watched on in confusion as the boy ran and hid under Lucky's bench.
He quickly reappeared from under the table. "Shhhhh!" He instructed with a finger on his lips.
"Are you sure he went in here?" A guard asked as they rushed into the room.
"Yeah this where I saw him." His partner said.
Both of them seemingly froze when they saw Shaurya sitting on the bench.
"Shaurya sir, I am a huge fan of yours." One of the men said in awe as he walked into the room.
"Me too!" The other one nodded enthusiastically.
Shaurya's mood instantly lifted, and a genuine smile appeared on his face. "Thank you!"
Both of the staff members awkwardly smiled at each other. Shaurya guessed it was probably because they weren't allowed to ask for autographs or pictures from guests.
"Is there anything wrong?" Lucky asked.
One of the men cleared his throat. "Sirs, did you see a b-boy come here? He was wearing a red t-shirt."
Lucky was about to say yes, but Shaurya interrupted him, "No." He said when he saw the boy shaking his head. Clearly, he had done something to have these men looking for him. "Why what did he do?"
"He pushed one of the vases in the main lobby down and ran away."
"What are you going to do when you find him?"
"We'll contact his parents and then get reimbursed. If the manager decides, then he might not be allowed in the club again."
Shaurya watched as the boy's eyes widened in shock and he hit his little fist on the floor.
"I'll let you know if I see him. I would really love some privacy." Shaurya said with a curt nod, dismissing the security officers.
Once the door closed, the child tried to book it out of there, but Shaurya caught him by the back of his shirt. Pulling him to stand in front of him.
"What?" The boy asked with a raised eyebrow.
"What?" Shaurya scoffed taken aback by the child's attitude. "Why were the guards looking for you?"
The boy's eyebrows furrowed together as he did some deep thinking. "I pushed off the vase." He whispered.
"That's bad!" Lucky chided slightly. "They are going to call your parents, and you are going to get into trouble."
"Why did you do that?" Shaurya asked as he folded his arms.
"An old lady was cleaning the vase, and the bad uncle kept yelling at her to clean properly, so I pushed the vase down. Now, the uncle can't yell at the lady." He shrugged his shoulders.
Both Lucky and Shaurya looked at each other in utter confusion. What were they supposed to say in such a situation? Should they give him a pat on his back, or hand him over to the authorities?
"So, then why are you hiding?" Lucky asked in a light, hearted manner. "Are you scared of them?"
The boy narrowed his eyes at Lucky and pouted. "I am not scared of anyone."
"Not even your parents?" Shaurya feigned surprise and shock.
"Mumma is going to get angry at me because I didn't count till ten when I got angry." He sat down beside Lucky dramatically. "Also when mumma gets angry, she cries, and I don't like that." He said sadly.
Shaurya smiled at the young boy. His parents had taught him well.
"Wait a second!" The kid hopped off the bench and stood in front of Shaurya. "You are that Maggi noodles Uncle." His eyes lit up in recognition, and he grinned widely at Shaurya. Shaurya noticed that his front two teeth had fallen.
Both the men watched, thoroughly entertained, as the boy performed the whole commercial for them.
Lucky and Shaurya laughed in response. "Yes, I am."
"But why do you put vegetables in Maggi?" He hit his forehead with his hand. "It tastes bad."
To be honest, he didn't like vegetables in Maggi either. "But they are good for you."
"That's what mumma says, but I don't like -" he stopped mid-sentence and then scowled at the men. "She says not to talk to strangers."
"Hey! Hey!" Shaurya pulled the boy back again as he made his way towards the door. "I am Shaurya Gupta. I am not a stranger. You already know me, right? We can be friends." He smiled at the little boy and extended his hand out.
He wanted to spend time with this cute little boy. Maybe this was what people called a pre-midlife crisis.
"Mrs. Varma says that you should only be friends with someone you like, and I don't like you yet, but my name is Dhruv. Dhruv Gupta." He placed his little hand into Shaurya's hand.
Dhvani and Shaurya were sprawled on their bed. It was a chilly, Dehradun night. He stroked her hair and back while she had her ear against his chest, listening to the steady thumping of his heart.
Dhvani raised her head to look at her husband, who watched her with so much adoration that she wondered how they got into such ugly fights. That's what had happened that night too. They had an argument over another trivial issue before she used a new trick she learnt from a women's magazine.
"What?" He asked, with a silly grin on his face.
"The magazine was right!" She said, rolling her eyes and going back to her original position. "Anything with you men can be fixed with a kiss and sex."
Shaurya's chest rumbled with laughter and Dhvani sighed happily as she snuggled closer to him. "That's not true."
"Really? I was planning to use this trick all the time we fight, but I guess since it is not working I'll have to find something else." She said with mock seriousness.
"I mean, not all men, but most men." He clarified, and she giggled. "You are lucky your husband is in that most men category."
She raised her head once more to look at him, "My husband is not like most men. He is one in a million for me."
Shaurya scoffed. "Where is my wife, and what have you done with her?"
Dhvani narrowed her eyes at him, and he immediately raised his hands in defeat. "I love it, though."
"Good!" She grinned and bent down to kiss him.
Her phone pinged just as they broke apart.
"Who is it?" He asked as she smiled into her phone.
"Rinki didi," She said with a grin and put away her phone and cuddled with Shaurya. "They are having a baby!" She said with absolute joy.
"The one in the US?"
"Yes! This morning she called me to share her doubts, and I guess she just took the test."
"Wow! That's exciting." He said with a smile. Although, the smile was more of mirth because of how happy Dhvani looked and sounded.
"When we have a baby, I am going to-"
"To have a baby, we need to grow up." He tapped her nose playfully.
"Hey! I am the mature one in this relationship." She pouted.
Shaurya laughed in response. "Sure, you are! But let's make one thing very clear." His voice turned sombre, "We are not having a baby till we can afford everything we want to give our child."
"Shaurya," Dhvani sighed. "Money is not everything."
"That's because you don't understand what it is like growing up without money. What it is like to be rejected at every step of the way because your parents are not rich. I am never going to let my children ever face anything that I did."
"And I am not going to let my child face everything I did." She said sourly. "I don't want to be that parent who assumes good parenting is buying them things. I am going to be there for him or her. In every achievement. Big or small. In happiness and sadness."
"Okay. We will figure it out when we plan our baby." Shaurya quickly tried to control the looming disagreement.
"Okay!" Dhvani nodded.
"Have you thought of a name?" Dhvani asked after a few moments of silence.
"Dhvani," Shaurya sighed.
"What? It is just a name." Dhvani pouted.
"I don't know." Shaurya shrugged his shoulders and kissed the top of her head. "Do you have names chosen?"
She nodded excitedly. "If it is a girl then Shanaya Gupta and if it is a boy then Dhruv Gupta."
Shaurya was brought back to the present when Dhruv jerked his hand back and brushed past his leg as he walked out of the room.
"Some attitude for a child, huh?" Lucky mused.
Shaurya laughed and nodded.
