The Potion (Part 4 of 5)
Previously, on Hermitcraft Oneshots:
He resolved to go apologise and check on the others, getting up out of bed and leaving the bunker.
And now, the continuation.
Lynx soon realised that he didn't know where they'd be. He decided to check up and down the bunker first. He poked at the pineapple curiously. He stared at BDubs' decapitated head in confusion. He took one look at Scara Junior and swore to take care of her. He saw the salmon villager, and ran away, definitely not screaming his head off. But he didn't find Cub, or even Doc.
He cautiously made his way into s3, looking around. There was nothing... There was nothing... There was something. Lynx screamed. It was a giant sock monkey thing. He then apologised, why would he be afraid of this sweet thing? He loved it.
And then he snapped out of it and ran, wondering what the hell just happened. Cub wasn't in s3. That meant he'd be elsewhere in Area 77. Where? Vex knows.
Lynx forayed outside the hangar, the wind whipping at him. He saw a treeline, and made for it. It'd be shelter from the weather, even if it led absolutely nowhere. So therefore Lynx decided it would be the best place to be.
He wandered through the woods, and got thoroughly lost. He wondered if he'd left Area 77 or something. He didn't know, and he was sort of afraid. Nonetheless, he pushed on. Maybe he'd find someone who could help him find Doc and Cub. Maybe he'd just find them himself. But he had to do something, or he'd just stay lost.
He found a campsite, where he found some of Cub's things. There was a photo of Cub and another man, presumably Scar, smiling together. Lynx took it, and set off into the woods once more.
Lynx gasped as something small and furry rubbed up against his leg. He looked down, and saw a small grey and white cat. He smiled, as if he knew the cat; she did seem to know him. He pet her, and seemed to get her favourite spot right first time. Something in the back of his head seemed to wake up.
"Hey there." He said to the cat, smiling. "Have you seen Doc and Cub?"
The cat meowed, then ran off through the woods. Lynx followed her, hoping that she was showing him the way. Soon they arrived at an interesting modern build, labelled with the letters HIB. The cat sat by the door, looking at Lynx expectantly.
He went up to the door, quietly thanking the cat, and knocked. He heard Doc yelp in surprise, before the door was opened. Doc seemed to notice the cat before Lynx, picking her up and petting her. Lynx could make out the name 'Jellie'. Doc then looked at Lynx, nodded, and let him in.
Cub wasn't looking good. He was laying in bed, sick and delirious. Whatever Lynx had done, it'd messed up Cub something awful. It made Lynx feel all twisted and horrible. As if Cub wasn't just anyone to him. As if Cub were his closest, oldest and dearest friend. He didn't even notice the single tear he shed.
Lynx took Cub's hand in his own, and whispered an apology. Cub smiled at him weakly.
Lynx was suddenly aware of the presence of another. Doc. Lynx felt his hair bristle, just from the atmosphere Doc brought in with him. Lynx let go of Cub's hand, anticipating what was likely to come.
"You know," snarked the creeper hybrid, as Lynx turned, looking him dead in the mechanical eye, "Scar would never do that. Not to Cub. Not to his friend." Doc emphasised the possessive, as if Lynx weren't allowed to share friends with Scar.
"Yeah, well guess what!?" Lynx's face became a fanged grimace as his tone became short.
"What?"
"I'm NOT Scar."
Things are said that people will regret.
"You are. You even look like him."
"I am me. I'm not Scar. I am my own person."
"You're nothing compared to Scar, and Ren."
"Guess what? They're dead!"
"You'll never mean as much as them!"
And only then did Doc realise he'd gone too far.
Lynx growled, and lashed out, hitting Doc in the face. Doc pushed him away, hissing like a creeper. They paused, and then proper fighting started, but nobody won. They were both just getting more and more injured, more and more roughed up. Lynx only backed down art times when Doc began to reach for his trident, launching back into an attack the moment Doc mistook it for surrender.
Cub looked up, and sat bolt upright at what he saw. He ran, throwing himself between Doc and Lynx, bracing for the inevitable attack. Doc, unable to stop in time, shoved Cub into Lynx. Hard. The two fell to the floor like dominoes. Doc gasped, and backed up in horror at what he'd done.
Lynx groaned, and pushed Cub gently off him. Being knocked over had set what little recovery Cub had made back to square one. He was unconscious, breathing heavily in a fight to stay alive. Doc stepped in to help, but Lynx sent him away with a cold glare. The last thing he needed right now was an argument to distract him.
He carried Cub back to the bed, bridal style. Cub was fading fast, Lynx needed to do something. He looked in a nearby chest and found an awfully convenient healing potion. He gave it to Cub, and waited. It worked, sort of. Cub recovered a little, but was still worsening. A healing potion alone wasn't enough to save Cub.
Seeing Cub that badly hurt, unable to be healed by normal means, made something click in Lynx. The same magic that had hurt Cub buzzed in Lynx's fingertips, begging to be used to heal Cub. Lynx resisted, afraid that he would make the situation even worse than it already was.
And then something - someone - woke up.
Whatever had awoken took hold of the magic, showing Lynx how to channel it to heal Cub. Lynx followed along, and was relieved when Cub's wounds began to close over. Cub turned over, falling into a more restful slumber. Lynx looked at his hand curiously, as it still glowed with magic. What the heck had just happened?
"I honestly don't know what happened either." Lynx heard a voice similar to his own, coming from over his right shoulder. There was an image, not entirely real - he was phasing through the bed - of someone who looked kinda like Lynx, but not quite. As if Lynx had drawn some elements from him.
Lynx stood up to face this person, mildly upset that he was slightly shorter, and asked simply: "Who are you?"
The mirage offered his hand. "Right, manners." He said. "I'm Goodtimeswithscar, but you can just call me Scar." Lynx's worst fears were confirmed.
Understandably, this simple remark made Lynx furious. How dare this person even try to take Lynx's place. Lynx was his own person. He didn't need Scar.
Well, if Scar had woken up, then Lynx could put him back to sleep. Lynx felt the magic glow around his hand involuntarily as he tried to shut Scar down. Scar gasped as he held his head in his hands, evidently in pain.
"What- what are you doing!?" Scar looked at Lynx in fear.
"I'm sorry, but I have to prove I'm my own person." Lynx replied coldly.
"And what does that have to do with me? None of this is my fault!"
Lynx faltered, and Scar relaxed.
"Because I can't have some ghost telling me what to do!" Lynx renewed his attack. "You're DEAD, Scar."
Scar gasped, in pain, shock and betrayal.
"Please. We're essentially the same. You're me, for Vex's sake!"
"No. Wrong."
"Then who are you?"
"I, LYNX, AM MY OWN PERSON."
Lynx's voice roared out so loudly that Cub awoke. He turned over and saw Lynx glaring at thin air, full of rage. Vex magic glowed and crackled around both of his hands, which shook slightly. Cub sat up, looking for the source of Lynx's fury. Not seeing it, he simply asked. Both Lynx and Scar put two and two together. Scar was a figment of Lynx's imagination.
Lynx heard Scar gasp. He looked over to the apparition, and saw a single tear run down Scar's face. The Vex ran to Cub, tried to hug him, but just phased through, as if he were a ghost. This broke the illusion, just to add insult to injury, and Scar vanished, becoming a voice in Lynx's head, nothing more.
A voice which whispered, broken by invisible tears: "Fine. Get rid of me. I don't want to be here anymore."
Lynx almost felt bad for Scar.
My wrist hurts, I'm not writing any more tonight.
