Chapter 1: Into The Woods.

Your Pov
By the time (l/b/n) and I reached the old house, it was evening and the sun was already setting on the horizon.
(l/b/n) had fallen asleep from the exhausting ordeal that we faced. And we still have a long way to go.

The house was surrounded by forest but there was enough room to grow a garden and raise some animals like chickens and horses. Grandpa (g/n) used to have a bunch of chickens on his farm and a Clydesdale colt that he got for me before he passed away. I'm sure that (h/n) is probably a full grown mare/stud by now.

We pulled into the driveway and parked. I took the keys out of the ignition and got out. I opened the back door and carefully unbuckled
(l/b/n) from his seat and carried him to the door. I felt along the top of the door frame until my fingers brushed against the spare key grandfather placed there for anyone who needed to get in.

I unlocked the door and carried the small boy in my arms to the couch that was covered in a blanket of cloth to keep the dust off of the furniture. I tore off the fabric and laid my brother on the couch. I kissed his forehead out of habit and ran outside to grab our bags. After I put the last of the bags inside of the house, I flipped a light switch to see if we had any electricity here. Sure enough, the lights turned on. I smiled to myself knowing that we would at lease have some electricity to do everyday things.

I then went to the kitchen and checked the fridge for any food. No surprise that there wasn't any in the fridge, so I went to the basement to check and see if there was any canned or jarred food. Good thing grandpa was a little old fashioned when it came to storing food. There was rows and rows of canned food and jars filled with fruit and jam. I smiled knowing that we would have enough food to last us for a while.

I wondered the basement out of curiosity because I never came down here over a stupid childhood fear of monsters living down here. I wandered around until I found a strange door that seemed out of place. And by out of place, I mean it had a padlock on the door. I looked around until I found a crowbar. I broke the lock and opened the door. I look for a light switch on the wall. I eventually found it and flicked it on. My eyes widened at the sight before me. First aid kits lined the shelves on the walls alongside anatomy posters and a bookshelf filled with medical books. In the center of the room was a large hospital bed with IVs and heart monitors.

Sheesh. Did grandpa prepare for the apocalypse or what? I chuckled at the thought as I looked through the cabinets and saw pill bottles and cough medicines filling the cabinets. I left the room and locked it so (l/b/n) wouldn't get in and hurt himself with the surgical tools.

I checked the other rooms to see if something interesting was in them. I found a room to put (l/b/) on the bed and tucked him in. He needs as much rest as he can get. I head outside to the garden that grandpa grew by the side of the house to see if anything was growing. Sure enough, there was some vegetables growing in the ground. There were a few weeds here and there in the garden. I'll take care of those weeds later. I thought to myself as I walked to the barn.

I opened the door and a flock of chickens ran out under my feet. I jumped from being startled by the chickens. Following the large chickens were little baby chicks. Aww. I wonder how those chickens are alive. I wondered to myself. When I entered the barn, the mess answered my question. The chicken feed was spilled all along the ground. I'll take care of that later too. I said as I put the task on my mental to-do list.

I then went to the fence where the horses and cows are usually kept. The field was pretty large and had enough vegetation to last the horses and cows for a while. I heard hoofbeats come near me. I looked to my side to see the beautiful Clydesdale grandpa got me as a birthday gift for my ninth birthday.

"Hey boy/girl. Been a long time aye?" I said stroking his/her nose. "We'll go riding later sometime. How does that sound?" I asked. (h/n) perked his/her head up in approval. I smiled as I patted his/her neck. I went back into the house and found some things to make dinner with. I decided to make some spaghetti. It was all I felt like cooking at the moment. And it was
(l/b/n)'s favorite food.

After I finished cooking, I went upstairs to wake (l/b/n) up from his nap. "Hey buddy. Time to wake up. I made spaghetti for dinner." I said shaking him gently. As soon as he heard the word 'spaghetti', he leaped out of bed and ran downstairs to the kitchen. I chuckled as I watched him run. He sure loves his spaghetti.

We ate in silence. We didn't really have much to talk about anymore. Not without Mom we don't. "Mommy's not coming back. Is she?" (l/b/n) asked out of the blue. I knew it was useless to lie to him. "No bud. I don't think so. But we still have to hope for the best. Mom's a fighter. She'll make it out of there somehow. We just have to take care of each other until she comes." I said. "If she ever does." he said looking down. "Hey." I said taking his head in my hands and making him look at me. "She'll make it. I know it." I said looking into his (l/b/e/c) eyes. He smiled and nodded.

"So, while you were napping, did you have any dreams?" I asked changing the subject to a better one. (l/b/n) continued to describe the dream he had about us. I listened intently to his adorable story. After we finished dinner, we washed the dishes together and that just ended in a big watery mess because we kept splashing each other. After we finished cleaning up, we got dressed into our pajamas. I sang a little song to get (l/b/n) to sleep. He fell asleep pretty fast considering the fact that he slept most of the day.

I went to my room where most of the bags were and opened one of Mom's suitcases. It was filled mostly with clothes and necessities. I was about to close it when I felt something in the bottom of the bag. I pulled it out and saw that it was a sword. Where in the world did mom get this from? I thought to myself. Then I remembered the story she told me.

Flashback

"Hey mom, have you ever been to Japan?" I asked. Mom smiled. "Yes. I have. Why do you ask?" she replied. "We were learning about Japan and it's culture in world history today. And since you've been all over the place, I just wanted to know." I said shrugging. Mom smiled. "I remember being in Japan for a month or two before I met your father. I was really close friends with a woman named Tang Shen. She was like a sister to me. We would talk for hours about things that were going on in our lives. I remember when she said that two men were fighting for her heart." mom sighed. "Oooooo. Which one did she pick?" I asked. Mom chuckled. "She said that she was going to marry a man named Hamato Yoshi. She said that she loved him with all her heart. I thought that it was romantic. I remember being at her wedding. She gave me something very special that day. Something that she wanted me to give to my daughter if I ever had one." I smiled with eagerness. "Really?!" I said jumping a little. "Yep. But you'll have to wait for your birthday." she said in a sing song way. I groaned as I faceplanted on the bed. "But that's so far away! Please can I have it now?" I begged with puppy eyes. "Nope. Not even with those eyes." she said laughing.

Flashback over

I admired the dragon designs on the sheath of the blade. The handle on the blade was (f/c) with my initials carved on the bottom of the hilt. I carefully unsheathed the sword and admired it. It's a katana. And a beautiful one at that. I thought.

I noticed a card that was attached to the sheath and looked at it.

To (Y/N).

Happy birthday my sweet baby girl! Seventeen already! You have to stop growing! I love you so much. I'll teach you how to use the blade. My friend from Japan wanted me to give this to you. I hope you like it. I love you so very very very much.

Love,
Mom.

My eyes welled up as I read the card. I love you too Mom. I took the blade and went outside. The sun was gone and the moon and stars were shining brightly. This was an upside to leaving the city, you get to see the stars way better. I got into fighting stance like I had learned in self defense class mom had me go to when we first moved to New York. I closed my eyes and breathed the fresh wild air. I opened my eyes and begun fighting imaginary foes.

This is how you fight. Minus the screaming.

My movements were swift and careful. I don't know how I did this, but it just felt natural. Everything seemed to be in slow motion for me.

I stopped my little exercise and bowed to my imaginary opponent. I looked into the forest that surrounded us. Most people would have an unsettling feeling about living in the woods, but I find it comforting knowing that I feel safe for the trees watching over me keeping me safe.

I walked back inside, put the sword back in its sheath, and placed it on top of my dresser I turned out the lights and went to sleep. I have a feeling that we're going to be here for a long time. Hopefully someone can stop the Krangg before they start a global invasion and no one is safe. Sometime later I'll have to check and see if there are any other survivors. But until then I'll have to manage the farm with (l/b/n). Hopefully everything will be ok.
