11| Doubt me
"Wait, don't tell me. I'm gonna guess the initial," he stopped her from saying it.
Yuki didn't even look his way and continued leading the way to the berries.
"Is it, uhh, J?"
She didn't answer; he thought that was a no.
"K?"
No answer.
"E?"
Still no answer.
"F? Wait, I don't think anyone has an F as their initial."
Yuki grew panicked by the second as it seemed like she could neither find the bushes, nor the lake.
"S? M?"
"Oh, maybe L?"
Yuki just froze, and her eyes widened. She gulped and tried not to let the panic show in her voice.
She let out a shaky breath. "I think we're lost."
It seemed like the boy was too caught up in trying to find what her name's initial was.
"It's an I?"
"We're fucking lost, idiot," Yuki snapped.
She started moving again, practically squeezing her last brain cells to remember where the bushes were.
"I thought you said you knew where you're going!" The boy exclaimed.
"Yeah, I did, too,"
"See! That's what happens when I listen to you," the boy huffed; and he, as well, started trying to retrace his steps.
"No point in retracing your steps; the soil is dry," Yuki pointed out.
"No shit," he retorted.
They walked around in circles for two hours; and there was only an hour or two left for the sun to set.
Yuki was sitting at the foot of a tree ripping up a leaf while the boy was still trying different ways to go back, but only ended up in the same spot he started from.
"Stop running around like a lost dog," Yuki said.
"At least I'm trying to find our way back. You're just sitting there being utterly useless,"
He retorted.
"We have like two hours or something before dark. We have nothing to eat or drink; and we're gonna have to sleep in the middle of the jungle. I mean, what's the worst that could happen?" The boy was on his last nerve as his eyes burned holes in Yuki's back.
Yuki stood up and walked to a tree that she's found somehow interesting.
Twigs were nestled on a branch, and it looked like a bird's nest. She remembered the birds fighting each other for a berry twig.
Yuki looked around for more birds or their nests.
"Where are you going? Did you just ignore me?"
"Bears. Bears is the worst thing that could happen," Yuki answered.
"There's fucking bears in this damn jungle, too?"
"Yeah, like those big, brown, scary ones that could snap your head off with one swing of their paw," Yuki continued on.
She didn't find any more nests till now.
"I wish one of them could do that to you," the boy scoffed.
"Yeah, well, I'll die trying to either fight it off or find our way back while you'll either hide behind a tree or run away screaming like a little girl." Yuki smirked.
Yuki pushed away some branches of a tree, but still couldn't find any nests.
"Me? Screaming like a little girl and running away? Please, I've never run away from a fight," the boy scoffed.
"Goddamn it!" Yuki kicked some soil and twigs up.
"Calm your shit. The hell you've been looking for anyway?" The boy said as he leaned his back against a tree.
"Move your ass and help me look for birds or their nests-and hurry up 'cause it's getting dark."
"Birds? What do you want from them-don't tell me you'll eat their eggs," the boy said.
Yuki shrugged a shoulder. "Not a bad idea, and the more birds you find the closer we are to either the berries or the lake,"
"Makes sense." he shrugged and started looking with her.
"Nests are up on trees-not on the ground, dumbass," the boy spat.
Both of their heads turned up, and they scanned the higher branches for nests.
"There's a bird right there," the boy finally said.
Yuki quickly walked to him. The bird was on a high branch, and it was feeding its chicks, but she couldn't exactly make out what the food was.
"Did you see where it came from?" She asked. He shook his head as a no.
"I found another one," Yuki said and pointed at a couple of birds that were standing on a branch.
"We must be close," the boy said.
They found a few more birds, but no berries or a lake.
"We're fucked," the boy sighed as he slid down a tree to rest.
Yuki was still searching; she knew the bushes were there somewhere.
"It's getting dark. Let's just rest here for the night," the boy huffed.
The sun was setting, and they were extremely tired.
"I'm sure it was here somewhere-" she cut off her own words as she noticed something on the ground.
She walked, and there lied a big footprint on a patch of damp soil.
Her brows furrowed; why was the soil wet?
It was when she knelt down to check it that she smelled the disgusting stench. She made a retching sound, and fell back on her butt.
"Come here, I found something," she gagged a bit.
The boy got closer reluctantly. "What did you find?"
"Probably a bear's footprint. Looks like it pissed nearby or something," Yuki pointed out.
"And?" The boy's tired mind still doesn't get it.
"Bears eat berries. I found one the first time I got to the bush," Yuki said and got up.
"More like it found me actually," Yuki corrected.
"What did it do?" The boy asked as he followed her.
"He just stared into my soul until I stepped away from the bush," Yuki said.
"I think I remember this place." Yuki stopped and gasped softly.
She took a few steps and-
"Right there! There were two birds fighting for a berry on this tree." Yuki pointed at a high branch that had a small nest.
"Hell, yeah!" Yuki cheered as she ran to the bushes.
"Thank fuck," the boy sighed.
Yuki started collecting berries almost immediately, "Get as much as you can fast. We don't know if the bear's coming back." She quickly piled the berries in the pouch she made of her shirt.
The boy started collecting, too.
"Let's go," Yuki urged after taking enough and started marching.
"I remember going this way after seeing the bear. And...oh! I walked straight this way." Yuki took quick steps; and the boy had to stride to catch up.
"Finally, bitch!" Yuki laughed excitedly as she finally found the lake after moving a couple branches out of the way.
The boy found the way she cheered a bit...cute. She tried to find the way back so hard, and he actually felt his heart skip a beat when he saw the smile of relief on her face.
"Don't ever doubt me again, bitch." Yuki stuck out her tongue and walked back to the tree that was marked with the bra swinging slightly from the breeze.
"That bra's still there?" The boy chuckled as he watched her walk to the lake and sit down on her knees to take a sip.
"How else are we gonna know it's our tree?" She said between mouthfuls.
He chuckled and shook his head. He gently put down the berries he had on the pile on the ground.
He walked to the lake and joined her to quench his thirst.
