Chapter 2
Aubrey takes a deep breath and breathes a pray. Markus was crying for his parents while Jakeston was throwing Cheerios at Cole, who was laughing. If she was on the outside looking in the scene might have been humorous, but not on her first day keeping them.
"Jakeston since you are finished eating I'm gonna let you down and you can pick up all of the Cheerios," she tells the two year old while she takes him out of the high chair. She then picks Markus up and comforts the child. Her first day keeping the twins had begun!
"Momma hold me!" Cole cries holding out his arms. Aubrey sighs before answering.
"Just a minute, Cole." She switches Markus to her left hip and then picks Cole up with her right arm. With a kid on each hip Aubrey takes the bowl Jakeston had put the cereal in. With the mess, cleaned up for the most part, Aubrey takes the trio to MJ's room. After a few minutes Jakeston entices Markus to join he and Cole in playing. Aubrey reads her book while sitting in the chair, glancing up to make sure they were playing nice.
When lunch time rolls around Aubrey has homemade mac and cheese, and meat ready and waiting. Traven comes home to eat with them.
"Rae said she took her lunch. She said to tell you sorry that she couldn't make it home on your first day," he announces as he fixes Markus a plate.
"That's alright." She fixes Cole and Jakeston each a plate before sitting down with her own.
"How has the morning gone?"
"Well Markus had a small melt down when y'all left, but we got over that. Other than that they did great," she tells him leaving out Jakeston throwing cereal.
"Good. Do y'all like staying with Miss Aubrey?" He turns to the twins with a broad smile.
"Yeah!" They chorus happily. They all finish eating with laughter and toddler chatter taking up the air. Traven helps Aubrey clean the table off and cleans the twins up.
"Alright boys y'all be good for Miss Aubrey. I've got to go back out to the pastures," he tells the twins as he sits at the table with one on each leg.
"But Daddy, I don't want you to go," Jakeston whimpers as tears roll down his cheeks.
"Can I go with you Daddy?" Markus asks seeming unfazed by what his dad just told him.
"Not today Markus I have to ride."
"But I can ride," Markus insists.
"I know you can and you are very good at it. You aren't quite ready to go with Daddy. I'll take you riding in a few days," Traven tells his son with a proud smile. Markus wanted to go with him, that means a lot.
"Jakeston, Momma and I will be back by supper time. And you get to play with your brother and Cole."
"I want to go ride with Momma," the boy whispers.
"I know, but you can't because she is riding a colt. Maybe you can go with her in a couple of days."
Not knowing what to do Cole climbs in Aubrey's lap and snuggles close to her. It breaks her heart, she knows that he doesn't understand why his friends have a dad and he doesn't, but how are you suppose to tell a two year old that his dad didn't want him? That his dad flat refused to have anything to do with him?
"I love you sweet boy," she whispers pushing the taunting memories away.
He kisses her cheek,"I wove you too Momma."
Traven lays Markus and Jakeston down for their naps before heading back to the pasture with his horse. Cole falls asleep in Aubrey's lap soon after Traven leaves. She puts him on her bed to sleep before returning to the recliner with her book.
Cole wakes up before Markus and Jakeston. He crawls up in Aubrey's lap and cuddles up with his head on her chest. She smiles and kisses the top of his light brown hair. Within a few minutes he falls back asleep.
The trio sleeps until 3:30. When they wake up they are happy and running full throttle. Screams, crying laughter, and arguing fills the previous silence. The never ending noises of toddlers was back and in full swing. Having all three verses just Cole with no one to share the load with has become slightly over whelming.
"Jakeston don't put that in your mouth." The two year old has a sand covered rubber pig in his mouth and happily chewing in it. The three boys had taken toy animals and machines outside to the sand box and were playing. Aubrey knew that all three would be covered in dirt and need a bath. She also knew that Raely wouldn't care and actually liked them that way. She herself enjoyed being dirty and played with mud when she was a kid; in turn she encouraged Cole to do the same.
"Boys share the toys. There are enough to go around," she tells them breaking up a fight over the red combine. The toys aren't popular until one of them had it, then everyone wants it.
"Momma you aren't dirty yet!" Cole declares before throwing a handful of sand at an unsuspecting Aubrey.
She covers his legs in sand exclaiming, "You haven't seen dirty yet!" He giggles and shrieks for more. Markus and Jakeston join in on it. After a Aubrey buried them all up to the waist they turned on her.
"Get her!" Markus declares in his toddler voice.
"Yeah!" "I'm gonna get you Momma!" "You need to get buried!" And other phrases go up from the two year olds as they pile sand on Aubrey. Buried in sand up to her chin Aubrey is laughing as Markus Jakeston and Cole drive their tractors across her sand covered body. Never in a million years would she have guessed she would be laying in sand laughing as tractors drive over her.
Thank you Lord for this wonderful care free day!
As the toddlers piles more sand on her feet she pops out of the sand scaring them. After they shriek they are thrown into fits of laughing. Rolling around in the sand puts more sand in their hair making them laugh even more, at each other.
"Jakeston watch out!" Cole declares as Markus throws a fistful of sand at Jakeston's back. Jakeston turns and chunks one back at Markus then one at Cole. The three engage in a full on sand fight.
"MJ come here! I got a secret!" Cole exclaims. Markus and Jakeston huddle up giving Aubrey the feeling that she was about to be bomb barded. Before she has time to react sand is flying at her from every direction. She shrieks with surprise and grabs fistfuls to throw back at the small sand blowing machines. In five minutes everyone including Aubrey is covered in sand. Their hair is covered in it and they have all eaten a little.
The crazy sand fight is interrupted by a red Four Sixes pickup door being closed. None of them had heard the truck pull up.
