Chapter 2: Candidates Selection

After hearing the alarms of declaratory, Luz and King were quick to run back to camp before any of the upper soldiers scout them out of the forest.

Upon arriving in the village, there they saw that several soldiers from the lead coven were already forcing the civilians to form a line in front of the grand stage.

They were already taking full control of the place. The people who refused to do what is task is immediately executed, all families had their children were taken away from them, and all other monsters were put into chains to avoid another rebellion attack

While watching all of these happening at the same time, the human knew she couldn't just stand around and watch her fellow abomination members suffer. She wanted to fight and defend those who are in need, yet she remembered that this is a tradition she can't stop

She looked around, finding where the teen witches were assigned to wait. Luckily it was near where Luz and King were positioned. All she had to do now is sneak into the line to participate in the games.

Luz kneeled. "King, I found my line, how about you?" She asked.

The tiny demon nodded and pointed at the group of monsters in the distance. "All we have to do is sneak in, right?"

"Good boy." She started, pulling her friend into a hug. "Whatever happens, stay safe, alright? Let's just hope our names won't be picked up there."

"Y-yeah, see you on the other side, Luz." The demon stammered out in a weak voice before hugging back.

Not long after they parted ways from their hug, Luz gave one last head pat to her friend as she ran into the crowd

King nodded and did the same, running towards the group of demons and monsters in the distance.

As the two ran off in different ways, Luz quickly dropped all her equipment into a bush to avoid confiscation. She glanced around, looking for a possible position to make her a part of the gathered group.

Then suddenly something caught her eye. A smile formed on her face when she saw the stranger she interacted with earlier. Once the two had seen each other, the stranger waved her hand and offered her a spot beside her.

Luz carefully followed and acted normal as another coven guard scouted the area. "Wow, thanks, stranger." The human sighed in relief.

"No problem, Luz. Where were you? The Emperor's coven arrived hours ago."

"I Was out hunting for food. I forgot that today's the day."

The witch sighed. "The coven clash." She continued. "Two of us will sacrifice their lives again just to restore honor onto our coven. I wonder who will be the two?"

"Probably one of the Blights." Luz crossed her arms. "Face it, they're the wealthiest and skillful witches in this district. I heard their youngest kid is the scariest of them all."

"Amity Blight? I think that's her name."

The human shrugged. "Hey, I couldn't care less. Let's just hope we won't be the ones walking up there, friend."

Her new friend smiled. "Yeah, stay strong, human."

At that exact moment, the trumpets rang again, causing most of the gathered members of the coven to tremble in complete fear.

Others started to cry, younger witches were finding their families, and others stood silent as they focused on the selection

Watching others furiously beg for mercy made the teen's heart stop beating. Her eyes widened when a mother was shot in the head just in the distance. Blood scattered everywhere and the victim's children screamed from the traumatic sight

"S-she was just defending her children!" Someone from the crowd yelled.

"Want to be next? Keep quiet!"

The sighting was making Luz delusional. She immediately looked away and bow down, trying to forget what she just witnessed.

The horned-teen noticed her reaction. She placed a hand onto the human's shoulder and wiped her tears away. "Stay strong, Luz. It just happens, we can't do anything."

"You're right. Damn them all." She gritted her teeth.

Luz at that time held her true fear from showing, instead, she displayed anger towards the lead coven. The fact that several members from all covens must die just to represent their clan was getting onto Luz's nerves.

Yet she controlled her anger from raging out. She stood silent and watched the assigned Emperor's coven member walk out the main hall for the Abomination coven.

The woman appeared to have long blackish-blue hair and an Emperor's coven uniform. She smirked as soon as the doors were thrown open.

Luz formed her palm into a fist, still waiting for their declaration for the 2nd war for the "Coven Clash" games.

"Good morning, Abomination coven!" The lady cheered, circling her staff to form a blue raven above them to make the event more interesting.

Others smiled while others responded with rage. As for Luz, she didn't know what to respond nor react. Was she scared, angry, brave?

All she could do was watch and control her emotions. The teen beside her displayed fear, couldn't help crying at the upcoming event.

All civilians in the age range of 12 above were declared after the first "coven clash" games. If older candidates were selected in other covens, it brings a disadvantage to the young selected warriors.

The rule made this year's event more worrying. But for the Emperor's coven, you must sacrifice one's life to restore honor within your clan and its people.

After a few moments of silence, the lady in front cleared her throat and continued with her speech. "Fellow, witches, monsters, demons-" she paused, glaring down to a specific person in the crowd. "Humans."

Luz arched an eyebrow back at her. The assigned host smiled and looked away, making Luz even more furious at them.

She removed her mask. "I am Lilith Clawthrone, second leading in the Emperor's coven and this year's host for the Abomination coven candidates!"

"Today is the second "Coven Clash" game ordered by our great leader, Emperor Belos! As you town folks know, two of you will be chosen to participate in the games."

A coven guard walked up to the stage and presented a huge glass box with the sealed listed names of everyone in the coven.

Lilith smiled and reached inside, taking out the first letter with the candidate's name. By this time, all of the civilians started to cry and worry, afraid of getting picked.

The lady placed down her staff. "And the first candidate for the Abomination district is-" She paused, opening the letter.

"King of Demons."

Luz's eyes immediately widened in pure shock, body trembling as her heart beat faster. "W-what?" She muttered out.

But as soon as she saw several guards taking her friend away, the human suddenly snapped. Adrenaline overtook her body, making her do things without thinking properly.

"K-King? No, King!"

Without any guards nearby their group, she took the chance to run in the direction where King was being taken.

"Please don't take him! Leave him alone!"

"No! Leave him alone!" She cried out after striking one soldier down, but before she could fight before she could even fight back from the incoming guards, one soldier took her from behind and held her tight.

"Let go off me!" She screamed, still trying to fight back. Sadly, all of her attempts failed.

King couldn't do anything either. He watched his friend being restricted by the coven guards as he struggles to break the chains the guards' had put him in

"Luz! What are you doing!?"

The human managed to break free from the soldier behind her. "Don't worry, buddy! I got you!"

When Luz realized that she was being surrounded by several guards, she took a deep breath and did what was right to save her friend.

"Stop!"

All of the crowd's attention was now onto her. The guards follow Lilith's advice to hold fire. When the teen looked towards the stage, she saw that the host was waiting for a response.

"What is this... human doing?" She took hold of her staff.

With the tension getting high, all Luz could think was how to save her friend. She knew that this game was a suicide mission from the start and letting King participate was only going to end his life.

With the urge to save a friend, The human didn't hesitate to yell out her decision. She has lost so many love ones during the war, she couldn't lose another one.

"I am Luz Noceda, Human witch of the Abomination track, and I nominate myself to take place in "King's place" in the games!"

Everybody gasped, even the lead host. No one has even nominated themselves for taking part in the Coven Clash. But the fact that she did this just to save a friend made Lilith look at her differently.

"Well, well, well." A smile formed on her face. "Would you look at that, our very first volunteer for the first time in history!"

She pointed her staff at the human, signaling her guards to release the demon. "Step up, Luz Noceda. Come join me on stage."

The human nodded. But before she could take her first step, she felt someone hug her from behind. She turned around and saw her friend holding onto her tightly.

"Luz! Don't do this, please don't leave me!"

"Hey..." The teen forced out a weak smile after patting her friend's head. "It's okay. Anything to keep you safe, King."

King's eyes started to tear up. His grip tightened on Luz's shirt. "T-thank you... But please! I can handle myself and-"

Before King could finish, a coven guard suddenly grabbed him by the collar and threw him with the rest of the gathered monsters.

"King!" Luz yelled out, reaching out her hand o try and save him. Sadly, she was put into shackles by another guard near the perimeter.

"Leave him alone, you monsters!" She tried to fight back.

"Silence, human. Your friend is safe, now that you took his place." Lilith smirked. "Now join me up here, chosen one"

Luz had no choice but to follow orders. All she could do was hold back her tears to avoid showing any weakness to others.

She bowed her head, secretly looking to her surroundings. Seeing her fellow Abomination members shock and cry for her sacrifice just made her heart feel heavier

The teen witches in her group watched her being escorted by the guards, shock presented in their faces. The monsters and demons along with King couldn't do anything but admire her bravery, and for the rest of the civilians, they just stood there, silent.

Once Luz stepped into the stage, they removed her shackles and secured if she had any given glyphs spells in her body.

Lilith smiled, tapping the teen's shoulder. "Don't do anything stupid, human. That sure was brave of you, let's just hope you'll make it."

"I hate all of you."

"Oh,  I know, dear child. With that attitude, you'll surely be dead as soon as the games start."

The hostess cleared her throat and returned her attention to the event. As she continued to announce the second candidate, Luz took the time to look around from above.

She saw King was still in chains as soldiers surrounded him. The human also saw the stranger she stood beside earlier. She was looking up to her, placing her hand in the chest to show solute for her.

Luz forced a weak smile and nodded at her. She then returned to Lilith as she began pull9ing out the second candidate.

"And fighting beside Luz Noceda is-" She paused, taking the last nominee for the games.

Lilith took a few seconds reading the slip, even if the paper had only one name written in it, she somehow looked happy on whoever it is.

She smirked. "Well, I guess your district might have a chance of winning this year." She started and placed the chose name down. "Your next warrior will be"

"Amity Blight!"
