Revelation
I wanted to thank you guys for giving me name ideas for this next chapter. I really appreciate the help. For Po's real name, I went with something that kind of crossed together rudegirl7 and wildkratticusfever's idea. For Po's mom, I went with the name wildkratticusfever suggested. I want to thank you guys for commenting on my book and being supportive. I really appreciate it. You guys gave me really good ideas and really helped to make this book. Thank you again!
Po managed to get to the training hall just as his friends arrived to begin training. He huffed into the training arena, telling everyone to wait a moment before he caught his breath. (Which didn't take very long since by now he was used to running for a long time). Monkey snickered as he walked over to them.
"Run right from the noodle shop again?" he asked jokingly.
"Kind of," Po admitted. "I ran to my room and then I came here. I had to drop off something dad found."
"I'm sure everyone one is interested to hear of your discoveries, Po," Master Shifu said in slight irritation. "But we have training to get to and I don't want to waste a minute."
"Right. I'm coming."
The masters all entered the training hall where they were greeted once more by the redish flames of the advanced hall. Master Shifu stood in front of them and said, "We'll begin today's training with a simple warm-up: help your teammates move through the training hall blindfolded."
Po froze in panic and fainted onto the floor.
"Po, get up!"
Monkey and Tigress helped him get to his feet, listening to him muttering about how he was going to die.
"You'll be fine," Monkey assured him. "Just pay close attention to what we're saying."
Po swallowed nervously. "Okay," he whimpered.
"Since you seem so excited, panda, you can go first," Shifu announced.
Before Po could even protest, Tigress pushed him forward where he was immediately blindfolded by Shifu.
"Hey! I can't see!" the panda protested nervously. "How do you expect me to not get sliced in half?!"
"Do you trust your team?"
"Well, yeah! We always help each other."
"Do you trust me?"
Po swallowed nervously. "Will I get assigned extra chores if I say not all the time?" he replied.
Monkey held back a laugh as Shifu resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "No," he promised. "But I don't quite appreciate you insinuating that I'd try to kill you."
Po stumbled around with his arms in front of him, trying to move around and get used to not seeing anything.
"Don't step dow-" Tigress went to say, but Po placed his foot on the open air and went sailing into the training area and landed flat on his face.
"I didn't say to start," Shifu told him sternly.
Po groaned and stood up. "Okay, where am I?" he asked, feeling in front of him. "Can I take this blindfold off for a second?"
"No!" Shifu yelled.
Hearing his master's voice, Po walked towards the platform where he bumped into it and then climbed back up. "Okay, I'm good!" he exclaimed, getting in position and turning towards one of the walls. "You guys let me know when to begin!"
"For starters," Tigress told him with a grin. "You're facing the wrong way."
Po hesitated a moment before turning around in another circle.
"Stop!" the master said when he was facing the equipment.
"Now move a bit to the left," Crane added.
Po scootched over a bit.
"A little more."
Scootch.
"Okay you're good."
"Sweet! Okay, try not to kill me!"
"Try to listen carefully," Shifu warned him.
Po flashed him a thumbs up and proceeded to slowly walk forward.
"There's a gap right in front of you," Mantis said quickly.
Po stopped and proceeded to hop ahead, slipping on the spiraled beams and bouncing around the equipment.
"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!" he cried with every bump. As he went to stand up, Monkey called out, "Club on your left."
"Which lEEEEEEEEEEFT?!" the Dragon Warrior exclaimed, getting hit across the training hall. He skidded to a halt on the ground where he heard archers firing arrows at him. He got up to run, hearing several different directions being shouted by his teammates.
"How am I supposed to live if you guys can't-OOF!" Po yelled, feeling something hard and metal hit his stomach.
"Flop back!" Tigress yelled.
Po fell flat on his back, hearing an object just barely miss his head. "Thanks!" he called out. He then got up and tried to do the rest of the course, getting bumped and scraped left and right by sharp spikes and swinging logs and getting burned by the Field of Fiery Death. When he finally reached the end of the training hall, he sat against the wall and tried to catch his breath. The masters ran over to him, Tigress taking off his blindfold and asking if he was alright.
"I'll be okay," Po promised wheezily. "Just let me take a quick snack break."
"No breaks," Master Shifu told him firmly. "You'll be perfectly fine. Everyone back to the start of the course. Monkey, you'll be going next."
The red panda sighed. "And for goodness sake, do a little better this time! I know you're all capable of working together!"
Tigress helped Po to his feet and guided him back to the front of the training hall where he collapsed in exhaustion and pain. Monkey, seeing his friend in pain, gulped as he was given the blindfold and guided to the beginning of the course.
Li, in the meantime, was busy walking through the valley of peace, checking out the various shops and talking with some of the villagers. He fascinated them with his travel stories and almost made them cry with the tale of how he lost his wife and son and just recently discovered his son still lived. During one of his conversations with an apple merchant, he noticed Mr. Ping heading over to the Jade Palace.
"Is something wrong, Li?" the apple merchant asked him curiously.
Li shook his head. "No, of course not," he promised. He looked back at him and added, "But does that restaurant owner...Mr. Ping, right? Does he make home deliveries?"
"Oh, no. He's probably just visiting his son. He lives in the Jade Palace as the Dragon Warrior."
"Does he?" Li asked with a smile. "He must be very proud."
"Oh I'm sure he is," the merchant told him, handing him a large bag of fruit. "Po worked hard and he helps everyone when he's needed. I don't see why anyone wouldn't be proud. I mean, he started off as a noodle maker and now he's an awesome kung fu master!"
"If he's the Dragon Warrior," Li said with a smile. "He must be perfect at this art. Alas for me, I can only sense visions. I'm not much of the...butt-kicking type. I'm way too fat for that."
"That didn't stop Po," the apple merchant assured him, watching Li fumble with some more money. "He's a panda too, you know. In fact, I heard from a good source that he sucked at it when he first got up there. But now he's a butt-kicking genius! You should go up there and see him in action. I'm sure he's dominating the training hall right about now."
Li handed the merchant his money with a sigh. "I can't wait to see my son again," he said quietly. "I'm sure he's doing something good as well. I just wish my Linhu could be able to see him."
"I am sorry about your wife. She must have been a really nice woman."
"She was. She could farm, bake, and raise our son. All without tiring out or getting snappy." Li smiled. "She was quite a gem," he murmured.
"Where do you think your son is?"
"I wish I knew. I've been searching for over a year now. I just hope he's been raised well. Pandas aren't always kindly taken in due to our appetite."
"I hear that," the merchant sympathized. "But I'm sure he'd be fine. Mr. Ping took in Po and he's not broke or lacking in food. In fact, Po still helps him when he's not busy fighting off crimes or training at the Jade Palace."
"How old is this Po?" Li asked. "Is he that panda that I saw in the noodle shop earlier?"
The merchant nodded, amazed that Li wasn't putting two and two together. "He's almost 34," he told him. "I think."
Li smiled. "I'm sure his father would be in for quite the surprise if he saw him," he said. The panda heaved the bag over his shoulder. "Well, I'd better be off," he added. "Good day to you, Mr. Mu."
"And to you, Mr. Shan," Mr. Mu called out. He rolled his eyes when Li went away thinking, Yep. He's definitely Po's father.
Not seeing the eye roll, Li continue walking down the road, getting ready to leave the Valley of Peace. He thought about the other panda that he had seen in the noodle shop earlier that day, hoping that Po's reunion with his father would be good. He hoped the same would be true with his own son. He just turned 34, he thought to himself in some slight worry. I wonder if he has an actual family. Like...a wife.... He shook his head. Probably not. Most people don't really understand our kind...except for us. Although Po seems to get along with everyone. And he's a kung fu master. He chuckled to himself. Imagine that, he thought. A panda the all powerful Dragon Warrior. His real father would be proud....
Something in Li's head clicked, making him freeze in the middle of the lane. Wait a minute... he reasoned. Po's a panda...adopted...34...looking for his dad...I did see brown markings and green eyes...Like Linhu's markings.... Is he....
Li realized at that second that Po was the son he had been searching for all that long time. Startled at this, he dropped his things on the ground and immediately dashed up to the Jade Palace. He's a kung fu master, he reasoned. So he must be up here!
Li reached the bottom of the thousand steps and looked up towards the top of the mountain where the Jade Palace stood. Without a second's hesitation, he began to run up the stairs, slowing down after a few steps when he quickly started to run out of breath.
I'm coming, Lei-Feng! I'm coming!!!!!
The masters continued to do their blind-guide exercise, doing a little better than before so that they wouldn't injure anyone else going through the course. Of course, no one got through completely unscathed. Monkey, who went next, got a few burns and was hit by several flying objects. Mantis nearly got crushed by a club while Viper got tangled up in The Earthen Marks of Eternity. Crane almost got through completely, but got his wing caught on a chain and he was swung into the Jade Tortoise of Heavenly Wisdom. Tigress went last and wound up injuring her arm on a spike, nearly getting sliced by the Slicing Blades of Fear, and almost impaling herself on the Gauntlet of Wooden Warriors. When they were finished, Master Shifu let them rest for a moment before he headed over to one of the fire holders and grabbed a tea pot and a tea cup that the masters hadn't seen earlier.
"Now that we've got the warm-up out of the way," he said. "It's time to move on to today's lesson."
"Please don't tell me we have to take the tea cup through the training hall blindfolded," Po moaned.
"Of course not," Shifu told him. "That's next week. Today, you'll be working together to get me a nice hot cup of tea."
The masters eyed him. "That's it?" Mantis asked. "Sounds easy."
"I wasn't finished. You'll have to pour a cup of hot tea into the tea cup and take it across the entire training hall without spilling a drop and while keeping it hot."
"And if we spill it and it isn't warm enough, we'll have to start all over again?" Crane asked reluctantly.
"Exactly. Now you'll all be working together in order to get this cup-"
"POOOOO!!!!"
The masters jumped in startledness and turned towards the noise.
"Dad?!" Po called out in surprise.
Shifu sighed. "Po, can you get your father out of the Jade Palace, please? I'd prefer training to go uninterrupted."
The Dragon Warrior nodded and went outside to find his dad. After looking around for a bit, he saw the old goose by the beginning of the slope that was leading up towards the training hall, yelling loudly enough for everyone in China to hear him. When Mr. Ping saw his son, he happily ran over to give him a hug.
"Dad, what are you doing up here?" Po asked in surprise. "Aren't you supposed to be running the noodle shop?"
"Yes," Mr. Ping said with a nervous smile. "But I wanted to come and see you real quick."
"I've only been gone for twenty minutes."
"I was thinking that you and I could spend some more time together. And maybe talk about my future grandkids."
Po slapped a paw to his head. "Daaaaaad....."
"I know, I know. No more talk on grandkids. But I do want to spend time with you, son."
"I do too, dad, but I have training right now and we can't really hang out at the moment."
"That's alright. I'll just hang out in your room and cook something for everyone when you're all done. How's that sound?"
Po thought about that for a moment. "Um..." he started, but the two were interrupted by a loud wheezing noise coming from the stairs some distance away.
"What on earth is that noise?" Mr. Ping asked suspiciously. "It's creepy."
"I don't know. Let me look."
The Dragon Warrior got up and went over to the stairs, the wheezing getting louder and louder as he got closer. He finally reached the gate where he opened it, revealing an extremely out of breath Li struggling to crawl up the stairs.
"Li Shan?" the panda asked in surprise. "What are you doing up here?"
Li wheezed for a moment before he asked, "Are you Po?"
Po blinked. "Um...yes?" he said slowly.
"I am your father."
An awkward moment of silence passed over them, Po feeling a bit confused as he watched Li try to catch his breath, still trying to climb up to the top of the steps. "Um...what?" he asked.
"I..." Li huffed. "Am your father."
He finally gave up and laid on the steps in an effort to catch his breath. Looking up at Po, he asked, "What's with all the stairs?"
Still dumbfounded, Po stood frozen, looking at Li wheezing his head off, unsure of what to do. "Po?!" came Mr. Ping's voice. "Who is it?"
The old goose reached the gates where he noticed Li trying to catch his breath from the climb. "Oh!" he exclaimed nervously. "What, uh....what's he doing here?"
"Uh...." Po still stammered, not sure of what to do. He knew he needed to get back to training, but he had his dad to deal with as well as...his other dad? Po wasn't sure what to make of the situation at the moment and he didn't feel capable of doing so.
Mr. Ping walked over to ask Li why he had climbed all the way up to the Jade Palace, leaving Po to stand uneasily at the top of the stairs. While watching Li explain to Mr. Ping in between breaths how he just realized Po was his son, Po heard his name being called and, startled, nearly jumped ten feet in the air. He quickly turned around and realized that it was Tigress.
"Oh, hey. There. Tigress," Po stammered quickly. "What's up?"
"Shifu wants to know what's taking so long," she replied. Glancing over his shoulder, she added, "What's going on?"
"I'm not quite sure," Po admitted. "This guy, Li, told me he thinks I'm his son...I guess.... And dad wants to hang out later...and cook...and tell embarrassing stories probably...and um....." He looked at his friend with a pleading expression. "What do I do with them?" he asked.
Tigress, a bit surprised by the story, said, "I'll ask Shifu. I'd suggest bringing them to the training hall so that he didn't have to walk all the way over, but...I don't think one of them can get up right now."
Po glanced over at Li. "Probably," he said. "Um, so should I just wait here, or...."
"Oh, who's this?" Li asked, finally catching his breath and managing to get to his feet. "Is this another kung fu master?"
"Yeah, this is Tigress," Po told him. He swallowed. "Um, listen...I don't want to be rude, but you guys did come at a bad time, so...is it okay if we talk to Shifu about this before we get into what's going on here?"
"Of course, son!" Li exclaimed happily. "I can be flexible."
"Hey!" Mr. Ping snapped. "He's my son! I'm the one who raised him and loved him and taught him everything he needs to know about noodles!"
Tigress cleared her throat. "Perhaps we should get going," she suggested, grabbing Po's wrist and leading him back inside.
"Right," Po said. "Dad? And.......dad? Do you two mind following us in for a second?"
"Of course," the two answered simultaneously.
Po and Tigress quickly ducked inside the gates with Li and Mr. Ping following them inside. Tigress looked at Po and asked him if he was okay.
"I'm feeling very confused and a bit lost," Po admitted. "But I think once I get them...and me...settled, I'll be fine."
"Lets just talk to Shifu about this and see what to do."
"Good idea. Two dads and a strict Shifu during a training session probably won't mix well."
