Murmurs of the Mind

The next morning, the masters were eating in the kitchen when Master Shifu came in to greet them.

"Good morning, master," they said in unison.

"Good morning," Shifu answered back with a smile. "I trust you all enjoyed sleeping in while I was away?"

"What makes you think we slept in, master?" Tigress asked.

"I've known you all for quite a long time," Shifu told her. "And knowing you fairly well, I can imagine that most of you chose to sleep in during my absence."

"Tigress didn't sleep in," Viper piped up.

"I figured that," Shifu responded. He cleared his throat and said, "Well now that I'm back, your time for relaxing has expired, so after breakfast, I want you all in the training hall.

"Yes master," the students agreed, bowing in respect. The master grabbed some food from the pot so as to eat alongside the students, Tigress lost in thought every once in a while as the group talked. She was puzzling over her bizarre symptoms of a heavy head and the paralyzed feeling she got every time she and Po locked eyes. However, she didn't want anyone to think that she was ill considering that she had spent quite enough time on bed-rest and wasn't about to do it again. After everyone finished eating, they followed Shifu out to the training hall where they got back on top of their exercises. Shifu told them that they would be working with weapons, specifically the tri-bo-yao, bamboo staffs, and nunchucks. The group would be divided in half with each master picking one of the three weapons to use in a sparring match against the other. The winner of each group would then face down against the other in the same manner. Shifu put Tigress, Monkey, and Crane in one group while Po, Mantis, and Viper were put in another group.

"Tigress, Monkey, and Crane," Shifu said. "You three will be going first. Don't spar until I say to."

The students bowed and got into a fighting position, awaiting Shifu's orders.

"Begin."

Tigress immediately grabbed Monkey by the tail, whirling him into Crane who crashed against the side of the training hall. She then dashed over towards the weapons rack and grabbed the tri-bo-yao and ran over to attack the masters. Monkey dodged the hit and grabbed the weapon so as to make it miss Crane by an inch or so. Tigress threw him off, accidentally throwing him over by the weapons where the master quickly grabbed a bamboo staff-an obvious choice, by Tigress' definition. Monkey went to hit Tigress, only for her to duck, and come back to whack him in the face with the tri-bo-yao. Crane, in the meantime, had flown over to the weapons rack in order to grab the last weapon: the nun-chucks. He dived towards the two masters who had begun to spar, dodging Tigress' attack with the nun-chucks and managing to wrap them around Monkey's leg. The primate stumbled for a second, allowing Tigress enough time to kick him across the grounds. She then dropped down to a split and threw her arms forward, swinging the tri-bo-yao ahead and knocking Crane onto the ground. The master quickly spun around and tried to wind blast the master with his wings, but Tigress dug her feet into the ground and flip-kicked him into a nearby wall. Seeing that she was distracted with battling Crane, Monkey came up behind the master and whipped the bamboo stick around, knocking her into the rack.

The master groaned and sat up, quickly dodging another blow from her friend. She glanced quickly across the grounds, seeing her weapon laying stiffly in the dirt. She had accidentally dropped it when she had gotten hit, but didn't have too much time to reflect on it as she rolled out of the way so as to avoid another blow.

I'm surprised Monkey didn't see that I dropped the tri-boe-yao, she thought to herself. Hopefully I can snatch it back up before he notices.

The master lunged over at Monkey, dodging yet another whack from the bamboo staff before grabbing it and throwing it, with Monkey attached to it, across the courtyard. She then darted towards the tri-boe-yao and grabbed it, leaping up into the air with a graceful twirl before slamming down towards the ground and kicking Monkey so hard, she left a dent in the ground.

"Excellent job, Tigress," Master Shifu told her, noticing that Crane and Monkey weren't able to get up and rebound from the attack. "I can see that your Phoenix Dip Kick has improved. Also, while I admire the way you handled yourself when you lost your weapon, I would like to remind you to keep your guard up since, as you've seen, not doing so can lead to negative consequences."

"Yes, master," Tigress said, bowing her head.

"Crane," Shifu said, turning towards the avion. "You had an excellent swoop attack and you made good use of the nun-chucks even though they weren't the most powerful weapon available. However, you need to be a little bit faster in order to dodge enemy attacks."

"Yes, master," Crane acknowledged, bowing his head and managing to get to their feet.

"And Monkey," Shifu finished. "You performed a very tactful ambush and improved your speed, but you need to be more observable. Tigress dropped her own weapon, so you could have taken that to your advantage."

"Yes, Master Shifu," Monkey answered.

The three warriors returned their weapons and waled back to the sidelines so as to rest, Shifu saying, "Po, Viper, and Mantis, you're next."

The masters bowed and moved into fighting positions.

"Begin," Shifu ordered.

As the three warriors began to fight, Viper grabbing the tri-boe-yao, Po grabbing the bamboo staff, and Mantis grabbing the nun-chucks, Tigress began to think again. She reflected back on the incident the previous day where she had gotten the strange feeling flooding over her. She tried to think about what could have been conjuring up the bizarre illness as she had never had that happene to her besides the day her and Po slow danced. And that had been only two days earlier. Maybe I have a head cold, she thought to herself. Except it's more spontaneous. Maybe it's when I'm doing things I normally don't do. But then why didn't I get that feeling when I hugged Po in Gongmen City? That was unusual.

The master tapped her fingers along the side of her pants, trying to think of a reasonable diagnosis. However, her thoughts were interrupted when she heard, "Tigress, you're up."

Startled, the master glanced over at the arena, seeing Po standing triumphantly in the center in a fighting stance. Figures, she thought to herself. He's practically invincible when he sets his mind to it. She then walked towards the Dragon Warrior, standing in a fighting position as well.

"Are you okay?" Po asked. "You look kind of dazed."

"I'm fine," Tigress assured him. "I've just been contemplating something of minor importance."

Po shrugged. "If you insist," he said.

The two warriors waited for Shifu's command to start. After what seemed like an eternity, they both heard, "Begin."

Tigress darted over towards the weapons rack, Po in hot pursuit. As they approached the various weapons, Tigress stopped at the last minute and ducked, swiping her leg underneath Po. Startled, Po tripped and fell forward, knocking the rack over alongside the weapons available. Tigress leaped over the master and somersaulted forward, grabbing the tri-bo-yao along the way. As Po managed to get to his knees, Tigress used the tri-bo-yao to spin her around and kick Po across the training ground, barely allowing him any time to grab a weapon. The tiger master then charged at Po, sparrow kicking him in the face where he skidded across the grounds again. He groaned in slight pain, but noticed Tigress spinning the tri-bo-yao around and quickly somersaulted backwards so as to avoid another blow to the face. He then swiped a nun-chuck and whipped it around, wrapping it around the tri-bo-yao Tigress was aiming at him. The master then pulled hard on the nun-chuck, pulling Tigress forward where she landed unceremoniously on the ground. Po then grabbed one end of the tri-bo-yao and pulled it towards him, spin kicking Tigress across the grounds. Tigress, this time holding onto the tri-bo-yao so as to avoid Po taking it on the way over. She stood up as Po came flying over with the nun-chuck, dodging a few of his punches and kicks and the other way around. She managed to knock Po down with a quick whip from her weapon, but Po jumped up and knocked her over with a dodge kick which sent her flying backwards. He shot the nun-chuck forward in order to grab her tri-bo-yao, but Tigress, still hanging onto the weapon for dear life, was pulled back up where she went crashing into Po and knocked the two of them down.

"Nice love-chuck," Mantis teased from the sidelines.

Tigress felt her and Po begin to lock eyes, but quickly rolled off of him and tried to use the tri-bo-yao to knock him over. Unfortunately, the nun-chuck was still tightly wrapped around the weapon, so when Po went sailing across the courtyard, he dragged the poor master along with him. As he began to land, he let the nun-chuck fly free, kicking the master into the ground as a bonus. When Tigress landed with a thud, Po quickly ran over, pinning her to the ground so that she couldn't get up. Too exhausted to protest or even get up, Tigress accepted defeat.

"Good job, Dragon Warrior," Shifu called over from the side. "That was a very clever way to use the nun-chuck in your attacks. You were a bit slow in the beginning, however which you must improve. It's detrimental to your saftey that you are on your guard and keep control of the situation, otherwise it could result in disaster. You were fortunate to regain ground."

"Will do," Po promised.

"Tigress, you were very strong in the beginning which is very commendable," Shifu told her. "But you need to expect the unexpected. Po got you by pulling a surprise attack with the nun-chuck, so I advise you to be more careful next time."

"Yes, master," Tigress said, getting to her feet.

"Now that we have our sparring out of the way," Shifu addressed the students. "I want to go over some crossbow training exercises before you break for lunch."

Tigress and Po went to put their weapons back, Tigress glancing over at the nun-chucks which resulted with horrible memories flooding her mind....

"Such sad, sad, faces," Lord Shen cooed sadistically in a cordial voice that made Tigress' anger rise. "But now is a time only for joy."

Coming closer to Tigress so that his beak just barely grazed her muzzle, he smirked evily and added, "You are going to be part of something beautiful."

Tigress snarled in his face as a warning to get away from her. He had just destroyed someone who had meant a lot to her; someone who had become one of her closest friends despite her cold exterior towards him in the beginning, and she would never forgive the peacock for as long as she lived. However much longer that would be.

Lord Shen stood back and continued on, saying, "Once we reach the harbor, in front of all the world, you and your precious kung fu will die. Then all of China will be mine." He glanced over at his wolf minions. "Set sail!" he commanded.

Tigress felt the chain that held her in place being yanked up, and she found herself being hoisted high above the boat. Lord Shen calmly walked back towards the end, most likely to watch them in triumph from a safe distance. She thought about Po and how she had just barely missed him, the fiery cannon flashing before her eyes as she remembered him vanishing along with it. Her chest grew heavy as she thought about her friend's death, her vision clouding with hot tears. She was so deep in thought, that she didn't pay any attention to what was going on until she heard Monkey said, "Po would want us to remain strong, hardcore. Right? Tigress?"

Unable to answer him, Tigress turned her face away from her teammate, trying her best to hide her growing tears. Po is dead, she thought miserably. And it's all my fault!......

"Tigress!"

The master snapped back to the present, feeling her cheeks grow hot as she realized that she had completely missed whatever Shifu had said.

"Tigress," Shifu said in concern. "Are you alright?"

"I-I'm fine," Tigress lied. "I was...I..." She sighed and bit her lip, quietly saying, "Is it alright if I meditate instead?"

"If it will help you," Shifu answered. "You can work on your cross-bow training later after dinner if you choose."

Tigress bowed. "Thank you, master," she said respectfully, and she proceeded to walk out of the training arena.

The Five, Po, and Shifu watched her leave, their faces contorted into one of worry, particularly Shifu and Po.

"I hope she's okay," Po said. "You think she's still having issues with the Gongmen City memories?"

"It's a possibility," Shifu admitted. "But we'll let her calm down and then we can ask her later. Hopefully it's nothing too serious."
