Chapter 2: What We Believe

As we walked over to the temple I let my mind wander to what life might be like outside our little valley. There would be so many problems with people invading all the time. They wouldn't have our mountain walls after all and there are always tales of war outside the valley. Some king fancies himself more important than another and tries to take over more land to prove it. What foolishness. Here in Lelafe there are no battles. No battles or war just as the Great Lord intended.

The temple was the gold painted building near the east of town. It was squat and quaint while being large enough to house the entire village at one time.

Walking into the temple I took my regular place and winked at the Sennani girls, Kvitten and Kotogne. Kvitten was really quite striking with deep brown hair, stunning blue eyes, and a pair of perfect little ears. She was wearing a dark brown cloak with a bright amber tunic and grey skirt. Her sister Kotogne could not be more different yet nearly the same, her eyes were dull where her sister's were bright; her clothing was worn to bore when her sister's was worn to shine. Yet somehow she looked nearly identical to her sister. Perhaps it was the way she walked or carried herself. Kotogne seemed to glory in her sister's shadow while Kvitten would make the darkest room seem bright. So well matched to be sisters I supposed.

Biser sat down beside me and groans in mock protest, "Another hour at the Temple. Really Sento, must we do this every day."

I nudge him and point to our left where Quitte was now looking away "I think she likes you Biser."

"Quitte?" he asked straightening his clothing.

We were cut off as Dunja started temple by raising The Staff of Wisdom. That old artifact it was said Mesna carried with him into battle before the exodus to the valley.

"In the beginning our Great Lord and Lady High wove our realm out of moonshine and starlight. The Lord forged our sun while the Lady pockmarked the moon they..." Dunja continued preaching for quite some time like we didn't know our own religion. I mean even the children know that the Lady keeps the dead and the Lord keeps the living. Sometimes Dunja talks like we don't know that we live in the afterlife as long as someone living holds us in their memory.

Dunja's sermon takes the better part of the hour re-explaining the dangers of Trickster and how the Heroes like Olag and Mesna fell before his servants. She reiterates the entire chain of the Great Lord's command and how we must always worship and name first the Great Lord and then the Lady High. I bade Biser good luck wooing Quitte and set out hunting. It was a few hours before I see a column of smoke coming from town. Then I heard the warning Horn. The Bruten were attacking. I charged off to help. Where were Biser and Aya?
