In the Cottage

As you open the door of the cottage, the soft scent of fresh bread washes over you. Inside, sunlight lights up the living room that you stepped into. The furniture looks well worn and comfortable. A couch the color of soft moss beckons you to rest a bit, in front of it there is a small table that has tea already set up as if someone was expecting you. You don't see the owner anywhere around so you decide to go sit down on the mossy couch. A small stack of books sits beside the couch, well worn fantasy books you've never seen before, a book with a small lock, and an open book at the top about mushrooms. You pick up a fantasy book but hear soft footsteps approaching.
As you look up from the book, a person about your age is standing there. They have red curly hair and round glasses that frame their warm brown eyes. They smile at you and say, "I hope you're not planning on stealing my favorite book."
You feel your ears burn as you remember that this is not your house and that you are definitely trespassing. The stranger sits next to you on the mossy couch, "What's your name?" you inquire.
A small smile forms on their face. "Emerson, and yours?"
You give them your name. They repeat it a couple times as if committing it to memory. "Your name has quite a lovely ring to it. I can't say I've heard one quite like it before in my part of the woods."
They pour two cups of tea from the set that you noticed earlier, a warm sweet scent wafts from the cup they place before you. As you pick up the cup to take a sip from it, you study the pattern on it, ivy curls around the brim and seems to climb down the handle onto to base.
You talk with Emerson for a bit and find that although they are a bit reserved, they are very kind and seem to hang on your every word, listening intently.
"So where are you from?" they ask. You have to stop and think, you don't know. You don't even know how you got here. You explain your predicament to Emerson. They furrow their brow, clearly trying to recollect any information that is helpful. "Well, let me look in the records, maybe something like this has happened in the past. Since, you don't remember where your home is, you can sleep in one of the guest rooms until we figure this out."
They find some clothes in the attic that you
can change into in the morning and show you to where your room is.

Emerson seems sweet, don't they? But they are surprisingly calm for such a bizarre situation. You will now be moving on to the chapter titled, "The Guest Room".
