Chapter 2
Over in the Arc family's carriage Jaune was staring out the window lost in thought. He was so lost in his own head in fact that when his mother touched his knee to get his attention he nearly jumped out of his skin.
"Jaune why are you so jumpy?!" Mrs. Arc asked
"It's nothing...I'm fine..." Jaune assured her, "it's just nerves." He paused before continuing, "honestly I don't know if I'm good enough for Pyrrha. She deserves someone much better then me."
His father sighed, "I know an arranged marriage isn't ideal son, but I'm sure you and Pyrrha will make a great couple."
"But I don't-"
However, before Jaune could finish his sentence he was cut off by the sound of another coughing fit from Hazel. Followed by a gruff, "we're here."
The blonde young man bit his lip nervously as Hazel helped his parents and him out of the carriage. Then then began the trek up the front stairs of the Nikos' house and Jaune felt as if his heart was going to burst out of his chest.
Mrs. Arc rang the doorbell and within seconds it was opened by a butler revealing Mr. and Mrs. Nikos standing just behind the door.
Jaune immediately noticed how Mr. Nikos sized him up, and how he almost looked...disappointed...in a way.
"Good afternoon," Mrs. Nikos said timidly.
"Yes...hello..." Mr. Nikos sneered, "please. Come in."
Jaune followed his parents inside and was instantly taken aback by how huge the house was.
"Yep...totally belong here." He muttered.
"So where's Pyrrha?" Mr. Arc asked.
"Oh she's-"
"She's taking her sweet time getting ready," Mr. Nikos said, cutting his wife off, "that girl really has no concept of time. Anyway please follow us, let's have a little chat in the living room."
Mr. and Mrs. Arc followed the other couple down the hall while Jaune hung back a bit.
Despite calming down a bit after talking with Saphron and Hazel, Jaune was feeling very panicked. He was about ready to bolt out of the house and go home.
However, just then something in the corner of the room caught his eye, it was a piano. Slowly the blonde young man made his way over to the instrument and his fingers hovered over the keys. Jaune had always loved music and it always seemed to calm him down whenever he was anxious. Quickly he stole one last glance down the hall to make sure he was really alone. Once he confirmed this he sat down on the piano bench and began to play.
Upstairs, Pyrrha was just putting the finishing touches on her hair when the soft notes of the piano drifted into her room. This confused the young woman as nobody in her house played, so she decided to investigate.
Quickly she made her way downstairs and found Jaune completely lost in his music. She couldn't help but smile at the beautiful melody and when the young man concluded playing she began clapping.
Jaune jumped out of his seat and stumbled backwards, knocking over the piano bench in the process.
"M-Miss Nikos...forgive me..."
The young woman kneeled down to help him pick the bench up, "it's alright. You play beautifully you know."
"Thank you. Miss Nikos."
"You know," Pyrrha said, "since we're supposed to be...married...tomorrow why don't you just call me Pyrrha?"
The blonde scratched the back of his neck, "if that's what you want Miss Nik—Pyrrha."
Pyrrha cocked a small smile, she was finding Jaune awkwardness amusing, yet it was also adorable at the same time.
But, upon realizing what she was doing, she straightened up and her grin vanished.
Jaune sat back down on the piano bench, "so....Pyrrha. Are you looking forward to tomorrow?"
"Of course, what young lady wouldn't be excited for her wedding day?" The redhead said, a bit harsher then she meant. "Are you excited? After all this wedding will raise your family's societal rank."
Jane fingered the piano keys, "honestly I could care less about that. I just always thought that marriage was supposed to be between two people who had known each other for a long time, two people who were deeply in love with each other. Taking that away feels wrong, especially taking it away from someone like you. I'm sure there's another person you must be in love with."
Pyrrha's expression softened, "no not really." She sat down next to Jaune, "my family has always been on a pedestal. It makes people think I'm too good for them or that I'm stuck up or something like that. I haven't really formed any friendships. Let alone a relationship."
Jaune turned to look at her and he couldn't help but notice what a beautiful shade of green her eyes were. Slowly he began sliding his right hand over to her left when a loud voice interrupted them.
"What are you two doing?!" Mr. Nikos snapped causing the two young adults to jump out of their seat.
"It's one minute until the wedding rehearsal starts and you're not even in your places. The preachers are waiting now come on."
He beckoned the two to follow and Jaune sidestepped to allow Pyrrha to walk in front of him.
But the two couldn't help but exchange glances and soft smiles as they walked down the hallway together. For you see, it was at that moment everything changed.
