She had no idea why she was mad or why she was allowing him to upset her. Or even why he was upsetting her.
Or why she even cared.
She slammed the palm of her hand on the vanity in front of her.
He was just another man, in another hotel lounge. She had come across dozens of men just like him.
Hadn't she?
.
She stared in the bathroom mirror for a moment.
"Why do you care?"
She was upset with herself.
.
As she left the washroom, she was sure that the table was going to be empty.
.
It wasn't.
.
She went to the bar. She never spoke a word. Kevin had been watching the events at the table unfold.
He quickly made her drink and poured her a beer.
"Good luck."
.
She simply shook her head and rolled her eyes.
.
She passed him the beer as she sat down.
"I didn't expect you to be here."
.
"I didn't expect to be here."
.
"So, why are you?" she practically snapped.
She was still angry.
.
He sipped his beer.
"Thank you."
.
"Your welcome."
.
"I don't believe in one night stands."
.
She half laughed.
"I beg your pardon?"
.
"I don't believe in one night stands," he repeated.
.
She didn't know what to say. Part of her was insulted and the other part was even more insulted.
"You think I sat here so you would sleep with me. Do I look that desperate?"
.
He looked into her eyes.
.
She saw the sadness immediately cloud them.
She immediately put her hand on his.
"Oh my God, I am so sorry. I didn't mean it that way. It was just a natural reflex. I ..."
.
He smiled and stood up.
"Good night, Miss Yetman."
.
She jumped up from her chair.
"Please. Please. Honestly, I didn't mean it that way. Its just that guys hit on me all the time and when you said that, i just ..."
.
He stood quietly for a moment.
Once again, all eyes in the bar were on the two of them.
He honestly did not know what to do.
.
She took his hand in hers.
"Please. Please."
.
He slowly sat back down.
He had no idea why he did. The little voices in his head were screaming at him to leave. He did not like this type of confrontation. Rejection had been a large part of his teenage and young adult life and it was the main reason for his choice to be alone.
This evening was just confirmation that it was the right choice.
.
"Hey."
.
He looked at her.
.
"I am so sorry."
She was genuine.
"I am a jerk. It was just a natural..."
.
He cut her off with a wave of his hand.
"It is ok. Honestly, I'm used to it."
.
She sat back in her chair.
"What do you mean?"
.
"Look, Miss Yetman."
.
"Vickie," she said softly.
"My name is Vickie."
.
He smiled slightly, through eyes that showed his hurt.
"Vickie. I choose to be alone for a reason. I don't need the rejection."
.
"Mr. Richards."
.
"I'm Dylan."
.
Her eyes beamed.
"I love that name."
.
He smiled.
"Look. I know you didn't come to my table with the intention of hitting on me. I had the only empty chair in the place. Like I said, its just one of my stupid ways. I just don't believe in one night stands."
He sipped his beer and looked out the window at the Falls.
.
"Why do you think I would reject you?"
.
He shook his head.
"Let's just drop it."
.
She looked at him. He did not have the look of a man that lacked any confidence.
He was very handsome. The kind of handsome, boyish look, that made it very difficult to determine his age.
His long dirty blonde hair that fell down over his back, kept in place by a black bandana, was a contrast to his slight, dark brown goatee.
But what really jumped at her was his eyes. Light blue and expressive, they did not hide anything.
.
She was not totally impressed by the earrings and heavy silver chain. She was not one for that kind of 'bling', on a man.
But Dylan seemed to pull it all together.
.
And of course there was his smile.
His amazing smile and beautiful teeth.
.
"They must be crazy," she commented, finally.
.
"Who?"
.
"Any woman who would reject you."
.
He started blushing.
.
"Ah ha. So you blush too, Dylan."
.
He nodded.
"Oh yea. Very easily."
.
She sat forward in her chair.
"Look. I think it is evident that we both find the other attractive."
.
His eyes opened wide in surprise.
.
"Yes. I think you are very attractive."
.
He put his hand up.
"Ok, enough."
He was blushing even more.
.
"Truth is..."
She hesitated, as though searching for the right words.
And even then, her voice was but a whisper.
"I have never had a one night stand in my life."
.
"Really?"
There was almost a hint of happiness in his voice.
.
She shook her head.
"Not to say I haven't thought of it. Even came close a couple times, but I feel that sleeping with someone is something you do with someone you love and are committed to."
.
"So why did you come to my table?"
.
She sipped her drink, smiling devilishly.
"Because you had the only empty chair in the lounge."
