Earning a Combat Rank.

After finishing our meals Miyo lead me outside.

It sounds stupid, but the first thing I noticed was the floor was another material that made no sense. It was smoother than tile, but it wasn't slippery in the slightest.

The next thing I felt was my powers come back to me.

The final thing to notice was the uncanny valley I had found myself in.

Going here, there, and everywhere were creatures of countless variety. Some were bipedal, some quadrupled, some with countless limbs, some none. Some had exoskeletons, some skin, some scales, some feathers, all in a myriad of colors.
As you'd expect all of the shapes and sizes were unreal.

None of them really payed me any attention past walking around me to whatever destination they had in mind.

Miyo cleared her throat and said "We should get going. We need to get you to the testing area. We want to see your skills first hand."

I snapped out of my stupor and followed her. Thankfully the hallways of this ship were incredibly large. As in big enough for the biggest species I saw to easily walk by if there were five of them standing end to end. And the biggest I saw was like a water strider that was about thirty feet tall and it's legs spread apart at least twenty feet.

So the several much smaller species like myself could easily travel with no problem of bumping into anyone else.

And from what I could tell we were on the smaller end of the average size of people there.

"Wow...... it really is amazing to see soo many different types of intelligent beings....."

"Well most are..... some are drones and robots." She answered me.

I nodded and noticed she stopped in front of a large door. I stopped with her and waited. She held a finger to her ear and said "We have Will here for testing. Please open the testing door."

The door immediately opened and she motioned for me to step in.

I did so.

The door closed behind me and I was swathed in darkness.

I sensed around with my telekinesis and saw the room was massive. Several strange things were scattered all around the room. They didn't move, but I could tell they weren't attached to the floor.

Before I could do any more investigation the things all started glowing.

I quickly used my power to fly up to the highest point in the ceiling.  It was good thing too, those weird things exploded. Just then the lights turned on.

I lowered myself down and heard a voice.

"Level one complete. Level two initiated."

All round me small robots started coming towards me.

My abilities aren't suited to so many.... but they're small enough for this.....

I calmed down and focused on all of them. I raised them up and crushed them into one big ball.

That's better....

I flung them into the wall and they practically disintegrated.

Some test.....

"Level two completed. Level three engaged!"

Five moderately sized robots wielding small blades came forward.

Hmmm.... maybe I can take one of those.....

I did so and the knife slipped right out of its clutches.

I started doing the same to all of them. Before I knew it they were all weaponless. I put the ten small knives in my pocket for now and threw one of them into the others. They all popped like party favors.

"On to level four!"

I saw this time a large spider like creature come into the room and started scuttling around at high speed.

I asked it "So what am I supposed to do? Catch you?"

It replied "Correct!"

I made it float towards me and asked "This count?"

It went limp in defeat and said "Yes.... please put me over by that vent now...."

I nodded and sent him gently over there.

After he scuttled away I heard a "Level 5." from the voice.

Out came a two foot tall rodent wielding a blade.

"I am a level 1 combatant. If you defeat me you gain that title."

I nodded and got one of the knives from my pocket and readied it in a reverse grip.

He looked nervous.

"What, you haven't seen this style of knife wielding before?" I asked.

He gulped and said "Only once....."

He tried a simple overhead swing, but it was easy to block.

I pulled out a second knife and jabbed it into his side. He squeaked in pain.

He tried swiping at me, but he wasn't focused and I blocked him again. This time though I knocked the blade out of his hand and pinned him down with one of my knives to his neck.

"Do you surrender?" I asked.

He nodded.

I got up and asked "You need help with walking or can you make it to the infirmary yourself?"

He shook his head no and scampered off.

Guess I didn't hit any of his vitals. That's good.

The next few rounds were incredibly easy as well especially when I got a strange lazer weapon off of a robot sentry. It was unfortunately too big for me to lift with my hands, but a ranged weapon is a ranged weapon..... even if I had to use my powers to lift it.

Lucky me I was pretty much the strongest psychic known on my planet.

And then I got to the tenth level.

Out came a bug guy with six arms. He was a couple inches taller than me and had quite the interesting looking pistol.

"I am a level two fighter. I hope you aren't tired."

I just couldn't get passed his weapon.

It looked just like a classic raygun from the movies, but had actual electricity going alongside the inside of the barrel.

I giggled "That thing can't be real. It looks like a toy!"

He growled "Hush you! It is an antique from my homeworld! I refuse to use any other gun! It beats that crudely made lead firing toy you had."

"At least mine was sleek in design and didn't look like a bad prop or a toy." I taunted back.

He screeched before firing his gun at me. As expected it shot a beam of electricity at me that was easy enough to deflect with some psychic energy.

"Heh, I'm not even a defensive class of psychic and I can deflect that easily. It's actually difficult for me to deflect bullets."

He screamed and fired again. I just teleported behind him and gave him a roundhouse kick to the back of the head. He stumbled foreward, but his thick exoskeleton definatly protected him from most of the damage.

"Damn, that is a tough shell of yours. Is the reason you're only a level two that you only have interest in using that gun specifically?"

He grumbled "It's not my fault the council can't see the beauty of my weapon!"

I guess just because his species is advanced doesn't mean they don't have weirdos....

I lifted him up with my power and threw him around the room a few times.

When I let him stop smashing into things he was unconscious, but still clutching his gun.

I continued on for five more levels and was happy that my next fighter was here.

This time it was.....

"Wait.... Miyo you're my level three opponent?"

She nodded and said "I am. But let me warn you, a level three is much more powerful than a level two."

"How many levels are there?" I asked.

"Five. One's are generally very bad at combat, two's have potential, three's are fairly adept, fours are masters, and fives are legendary warriors. We have about twenty level fives at any one time in the entire galaxy. Only one is on this ship."

I smiled "Alright. I guess I'll just have to do my best to see how I stack up. I am a very well trained human after all. Although I don't have any weapons I specialize in......"

She nodded and said "Your weapons are probably refitted now. Would you like them?"

I blinked "Refitted?"

She nodded "Your weapons were easy to refit with up to date blaster technology. They will function and look the same, but fire compressed plasma instead of the lead projectiles they fired before."

"Nice! Why didn't you fix up the last guy's weapon?" I asked.

She sighed "Ianston refuses to allow us to modify his weapon. It is an antique after all."

I shrugged and said "I'm fine with it. I would actually love my guns back. It beats lugging this around and using these knives."

She nodded and a panel rose up from the ground.

I walked over to it and saw my five seven. It didn't have the silencer, but I assume it wasn't necessary. There were a few strange clips of what I assume was the ammo. It looked like clear glass with strange purple liquid inside.

I loaded up my gun and asked "How many shots do I get per clip?"

"That depends on the firing mode. We converted the secondary safety switch into a button that lets you choose three modes. Single fire, burst fire, and stream fire. With that big of a clip you have one hundred single fire shots, thirty burst fire shots, and/or fifty seconds of stream fire. Just a warning, the stream fire not only depletes ammo quickly, but it is meant to cut through things in case of an emergency."

While she was talking I had put on my holsters for both my guns and picked up my shotgun.

"Your other gun uses rail gun tech to launch almost any metal object you want at speeds reaching ten times the speed of sound." She added.

"I assume there is a reason for the two different types of ammo?"

"Yes. Plasma shields block plasma, but have a hard time with physical projectiles. Physical armor blocks shrapnel easily, but gets burned by plasma like you wouldn't believe."

"I see. Judging by your attire you have a plasma shield."

"You are correct."

I looked at the metal I was provided and asked "This stuff looks pretty sharp. You sure you won't die from it?"

She shook her head and said "as long as you don't outright shoot me in the head I can most likely get healed in time. Even so that is why the infirmary is right next door."

I nodded and got ready.

She counted down.

"Three, two, one..... Go!"

She flew off and disappeared from my sight. I quickly sensed around and found she was moving at incredible speed. Thankfully if I could sense her I could hold her.

I stopped her abruptly and I felt her aim out at me.

I teleported behind her and shot my first round from the shotgun. It shredded into her wings, but she managed to wrestle from my grasp.

I learned very quickly while she was fast in the air, she was stupidly fast on the ground.

Every time I thought I got her she would slip away.

At the same time she open fired with her weapon. It was apparently plasma based because the shots were slow, glowed brightly, and nearly singed my skin as they passed by. Thankfully they were also slow enough to see, so they were slow enough to dodge with teleporting.

In a way we were at a stalemate.

Alright.... let's try this then!

I pulled out my pistol and switched to continuous fire before shooting in a circle creating a rapidly expanding plasma ring low to the ground.

Just like I had hoped it tripped her up long enough for me to grasp her with my power and slam her into the wall.

I focused and made sure she didn't slip. I asked "Do you give up?"

She struggled, but I had a firm grip and even managed to disarm her.

She groaned and said "I concede defeat....."

As I released her I asked " How heavy and how restrictive would some decent physical armor be?"

"It depends. What do you wish to defend?"

"My torso and my head."

"Not too restrictive..... and essentially five pounds of weight. We can synthesize something for you by the time you complete stage eighteen." She told me.

"Sounds good. Could you make the helmet black with a blue stripe down the middle and the chest plate have a similar pattern but offset to the right a bit?"

She nodded and said "No problem. Good luck."

She picked up her weapon and left the room.

"Level Sixteen start."

It seemed to be a repeat of level two, but the bots were black and coming at me much faster. They started leaping towards me like a horde.

I teleported and shot my shotgun at a cluster of them. The shots bounced right off and embedded into the wall.

I had to teleport away again before holstering my shotgun and pulling out the plasma five seven.

I set it to burst fire and let loose. All the while I shot blasts of psychic energy flinging them into the walls.

After twenty minutes of this I was out of ammo, the bots were destroyed, and I had finally started working up a sweat.

Before the next level started I asked "Can I get more ammo? I used it all."

The voice said "Request accepted. Please deposit spent clips in the receptical to be refilled."

A chute appeared in front of me. I dropped all three of my clips into it. Within seconds they popped back up filled with the same purple liquid as before.

I loaded a magazine and got ready.

"Start the next level please!"

"Level Seventeen start!"

Much like the previous level it was a blast from the past on steroids. Those robots I got the knives from were covered in the same armor that the small robots had and were carrying laser swords......

"Holy shit they have lazer swords!!! That's soo cool!" I couldn't help but shout.

I tried stealing one, but it was solidly welded to their arms. I set my pistol to continuous fire and cut off an arm of one. I finished cutting down to the hilt and thankfully it was still functioning perfectly.

I used psychic energy to get it to my hand.

"Hehehe...... they said learning lazer sword techniques was a waste of good training time. They said sword training in general would be a waste in modern times! Ha!"

I started teleporting left and right slicing apart bot after bot getting a couple spare lazer swords.

Just like that it didn't matter that I was getting a little tired and hungry, adrenaline and the satisfaction of actually using a lazer sword was all I needed to keep going.

The armor I got at level 18 just made the deal all the sweeter. It fit perfectly, was incredibly light for how much protection it gave, it was very well ventilated and breathable, and I looked badass in it.

And then my end goal appeared. Level twenty in this test, and a level four combatant.

Only problem was I was getting pretty winded. My mind was cloudy from over using my power. My body was feeling the burn of a long workout, my mouth was dry, I was covered in sweat, my stomach was howling and I'm pretty sure I was out of adrenaline.

It didn't help that my opponent was ten feet tall, rippling with muscle, had eight arms each carrying their own weapon, four legs all pointing in a cardinal direction, and had thick and ornate plate armor that made mine look like I was wrapped in bubble wrap.

I breathed heavily "I suppose I can't get a rest, a meal, and a drink before we fight huh?"

He shook his head no and said "I apologize. I am too highly ranked to spare much time. It is now, or wait a year until my next open timeslot."

I sighed and got two of the lazer swords ready.

His entire body rotated so that he had his own plasma weapons ready. I noticed that he didn't have a single ranged weapon.

There is no way I can clash with his weapons, plus I'm too exhausted to teleport more than three more times. My best bet is either using ranged weapons or hoping he is slow enough for me to slip in his guard, get some slashes off, and slip out of his range.....

He closed the gap a little quicker than I had anticipated and managed to leave a slash in my armor. Thankfully I had jumped back enough not to get ripped open by the first cut of his blade.

I unfortunately had to use a teleport to get under him and thrust my swords upwards.

He roared in pain as my swords pricked him, but he still grabbed me and broke my arms well before I could get away.

I screamed and teleported away. My arms hung limply at my side. Thankfully my body found more adrenaline so I managed to get a plasma sword in my mouth. I noticed that he was bleeding pretty badly from his wound, but ignored it like it was just mildly inconvenient.

I teleported and lodged my sword into one of his arms before I was flung back and fell unconscious.

When I came to I heard someone saying "To think the little guy actually made it to level twenty. Not to mention he actually wounded Targus pretty badly."

"I know.... I mean humans usually aren't able to get passed level seventeen. I guess that mutation he underwent really boosted his fighting capabilities." The other answered.

"So what rank did he end up with?"

"A four point zero for now. He did go up against a four point five in a horribly exhausted state...." the second voice answered.

I opened my eyes and saw one blob like creature and one that looked like a brain on two stilts.

Everything was tinted green so I assumed I was in some sort of healing tank. I couldn't move though so I assume it was more like healing gel.

"Ah! He's awake! Liquify the gel and drain the tank!" The blob ordered.

The brain pressed a few buttons and I felt the gel around me warming up before draining away.

I stood in the glass tank for a couple seconds before it opened up. I walked out and was glad to know my arms were perfectly healed.

"Now.... where are my clothes......" I said looking around.
