Chapter 4: In The Old House

The four of them were squeezed in the back of Parker's car. The front seat was occupied by a German Shepherd who was sleeping soundly. As the car started to move, Davis noticed no new change. In fact, it didn't even seem like ten years have passed. Davis remembered a conversation with his grandfather only a few days before he was taken.

"When you were a child, what did you use to think the future would be like?" Davis had asked.

"Quite different, Dave, quite different from what it is now." His grandfather replied. "We saw a lot of movies about the future and we used to think there would be jets flying everywhere, there would be a lot of robots, a lot of technology, but......"

"But you were pretty disappointed when none of that sort of thing happened." Davis broke in.

"Exactly. And it's all the controller's fault. Only he has great technology and robots. He gets a lot of money by collecting donations from the people. The people are scared to death of him and they hand him all of their money." His grandfather said sorrowfully.

The car screeched to a halt. On his right, Davis saw a huge building. A tiny board with Parker's Pizza written on it was hanging on the balcony of the third floor. Parker got out of the car, but the victims were too weak to move. So Parker provided them some pizzas to satisfy their stomach.

"My pizzeria is on the third floor." Parker said while getting into the lift. "You must be surprised why it only comprises of one floor. So let me explain, the Control Tower is only a mile away from my pizzeria. You can see it from the window. People are really frightened of the controller and they won't come to a pizzeria that's near the Control Tower. That's why the buildings here are really low-priced. But I only bought one floor, knowing that I won't have a great deal of customers."

"That's why the streets here are deserted." Kyle said.

"Here's the sitting place." Parker said as they got to the third floor. "There's the washroom, there's the kitchen...."

"Wait. We don't know how to cook." Kyle broke in.

"Oh, it's easy. You'd learn it soon. And here's your room." Parker said pushing open a door to reveal an empty room.

"We'll sleep on the floor?" DeWayne asked.

"I'm afraid you have to. Now are you ready to learn how to make a pizza?" Parker said.

"Actually, I have to go somewhere first. I'd be back soon." Davis said and rushed off.

He knew that the house in which he lived with his family wasn't too far from the Control Tower. He just wanted to see what the house was like after so many years. He knew the way to the house like the back of his hand. And so, after fifteen minutes, he found himself standing in front of it.

As Davis took a step forward, he heard a shout.

"You're going inside that house?" A man shouted.

"Well.....whom does it belong to?" Davis asked.

"Nobody." He said. "Its owners died a few years ago. It is said that the house is still haunted by their spirits."

"Thanks for the information but, I'm going in." Davis said and got inside. The house seemed a bit changed. For starters, there were no plants in the garden. His mother was really fond of gardening. Davis remembered how many flowers and plants there were. Davis advanced forward. He turned the doorknob. The door opened, making a creaking sound. Davis coughed. There was dust everywhere. On the furniture, on the stairs, on everything.

"Dave." He heard a voice.

Davis quickly turned around. There was nobody in sight.

"Dave." He heard it again.

That voice seemed familiar. As he turned, he saw a pale figure.

"Grandpa!!" He cried.
