Chapter 6: Against the Winds

"Eyes as blue as the azure sky...that is the symbol of The Contractor"
—————
Wednesday sits alone in the center of her dorm room, quietly reciting an ominously dark chant as she holds the necklace her mother gave her. Surrounded by candles, she continues the winds around her shift creating a whisper as she sits in front of an Ouija board with "Goody." Written on the front.

"In case you're wondering, I don't hold séances very often. I can barely tolerate the living. Why would I want to commune with the dead? But my mother told me Goody is the only one that can train me to control my psychic ability. The sooner I master that, the sooner I crack this case." Wednesday thought, the door to her room opens slowly and a gust of wind snuffs the candles out, Wednesday thought the seance had worked as a figure emerged from the shadows, but much to her disappointment, it was only Enid.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt your...Uh, do I even want to know?" She says.

"I was reaching into the black maw of death to contact a relative."

"Feels very on-brand for you. But wouldn't Y/N be a big help here, he does speak to and listen to spirits all the time."

"Only in regards to spirits of the wind, that idiotic Windbreaker wouldn't know the first thing about communicating with the deceased." Wednesday replies coldly

"I guess so, You have a relative named Goody?"

"She was one of the original outcasts. Been attempting to summon her, but she seems to be ignoring my entreaties."

"Oh, you thought about using one of my scented candles? The aroma of steak tartare is to die for. Enid smiled before out of nowhere a slip of paper was slid underneath their door.

"Maybe Goody answered you after all." Enid said and Wednesday walked over and read the note made from cut-out pieces of magazines. "If you want answers, come to Crackstone crypt at Midnight."

"I doubt she communicates in magazine cutouts." Wednesday said, and she alongside Enid make their way to the crypt, Enid was obviously scared out of her mind for whatever lies ahead. Enid quickly jumps at the howl of an animal.

"You insisted on coming along. I was fine on my own. Seems like our wannabe Deep Throat is already here." Wednesday and Enid approach the door to the crypt, with the smell of death ripe in the air

"Ew. What died?"

"Smells like childhood. Come on."

"Second thoughts. Why don't I just stay out here? You know, as a lookout." Enid said, which Wednesday just ignores before heading inside, she slowly sneaks around the crypt, using her flashlight to analyze any possible hint that could be there, but what caught her attention was the strange whispers coming from behind the tomb.

"Whoever you are, show yourself. Try anything and you'll lose limbs. She says with a fiery glare and an Ice cold truth gripping every word, much to her disappointment though it was only a familiar group of teenagers that had emerged from the darkness with a cake in hand. Their laughs irritated her more and more as Wednesday realized she had wasted her time.

"Surprise! Happy birthday to you ♪ ♪ Happy birthday to you ♪ ♪ Happy birthday, dear Wednesday ♪ ♪ Happy birthday to you ♪" They sing, Wednesday's eyes dart around the crowd and her disappointment grew even more as she immediately noticed something, A certain Idiotic Contractor was nowhere to be found.

"I should have known you were behind this. What part of "no party under the penalty of death" do you not understand?" She says as she spots Thing with a little dark party hat on his wrist before glancing at the cake which was a grim reaper, with a pink balloon.

"I thought my cake design was pretty inspired." Xavier says

"The pink balloon was my little touch. Why don't you make a wish?" Enid says, Wednesday simply ignores her again and turns to see something written in Latin, carved onto the walls.

"Wait, it's Latin. Fire will rain... when I rise."

"That's not really a wish." Enid said

"The first part of that was burned onto Nevermore's lawn. It can't be a coincidence."

"Wait, we're never eating that cake, are we?" Ajax asks, Wednesday glides her hand across the carved-in words, and has another vision, this time she's in front of a gate to a manor. And beyond the gate stood Goody.

"Crackstone is coming. Crackstone is coming." Goody repeats and vanishes into the fog reappearing next to her.

"Goody. You're the Raven in my bloodline. Wednesday. I was told you could teach me how to control my ability."

"There is no controlling a raging river. You must learn to navigate it without drowning. Time is not on our side. To stop Crackstone, this place you must seek."

"Do you always speak in riddles?"

"Do you always seek simple answers? The path of a Raven is a solitary one. You end up alone, unable to trust others, only seeing the darkness within them."

"Is that supposed to scare me?"

"...It should." Goody replies, as Wednesday comes back from her vision, knowing what could lead down the path.

The next morning, Wednesday is doing her homework, when thing crawls onto her shoulder.

"Careful, that's my cold shoulder." She says.

"Don't blame Thing. The party was my idea, even Y/N wanted to come but he said he was busy with something super important. Everyone deserves to be celebrated on their birthday." Enid says approaching

"I prefer to be vilified."

"What happened? It looked like you were having a seizure."

"I wasn't that lucky."

"Can I at least get some kudos for pulling one over on you?"

"The subterfuge was impressive." Wednesday admits, Thing quickly drags something over from her bed, she sees the tag and reads it. "May your 16th be as sour and misery-filled as your desire. Your ever-doting mother and father" They asked Thing to hide it before they left on Parents Weekend." Enid says and she opened it, much to Enid's terror it was a taxidermy set.

"Ew! That's so gross."

"I would've preferred live squirrels." Wednesday says, she glances over to Enid, who hands her a present.

"While we're still accepting presents" She says smiling, Wednesday opens it to a knitted...something?

"Well, do you like it?" Enid asks excitedly.

"What is it exactly?"

"It's a snood, silly. I made it in your signature colors. And you want to know what the best part is? I have one too! We can wear them together to class!"

"Oh, Enid, this is far too unique to wear to something like class. I suggest we wait for a more special occasion...like a funeral." Wednesday said and they continue through their day. Y/N was investigating the burned grass from the other day, kneeling down and feeling it with his hands.

"Find anything yet?" Wednesday asks behind him, he stands up as she walks up beside him to investigate as well.

"Well, it definitely wasn't a fire magic user that's for sure the winds around it aren't alike at all, this was hand done, and planned to set the gasoline let it sink in for a while light it up, and then boom."

"So you're suspecting someone from inside Nevermore is responsible?" Wednesday asks.

"That or one at least let someone in from the outside to do it instead, either way, somebody wanted you to see it that much is clear." He says and Wednesday nods in agreement before he begins again "Also, sorry about missing the little surprise party Enid and the others threw for you, although from what she told me there wasn't really much of one at the end anyways." Y/N chuckles and Wednesday stays deadpan "Birthday parties are already a horrid experience on their own, but with so many people that's just frosting on the already rotten cake, although I am slightly curious what exactly were you doing that you couldn't attend?" She asked and for a moment Y/N hesitated "...The Spirit King of the Wind needed to talk to me about something, ya know just Contractor stuff." He says obviously lying as the winds around them shifted slightly which Wednesday noticed instantly but let him do so anyways "Right." She said as Y/N stood up and faced her.

"But, if you're willing to let me I'd gladly like to make it up to you. No parties, no extra people, just you and me celebrating alone together, maybe in a cemetery or an old crypt perhaps with black roses, a picnic, some Edgar Allen Poe, Or just beat up and or extort from more people that deserve it, I'm down for anything really...just as long as I'm with you." He says, the last few words ringing in her ears as the feeling in her chest made itself known to her again, she had honestly never heard of a better night in her life. It almost made her crack the smallest of smiles, but she quickly shook those fantasies aside.

"As horribly pleasant as that sounds, I believe you and I have more pressing matters to deal with at the moment than some night of pleasantries. There's a murderous monster still on the loose and we need to figure out who and what it is." She says. Y/N just nods and flashes his signature smile.

"So raincheck then?" He says, Wednesday glares at him for a moment before rolling her eyes as she leaves, and Y/N watches as she walks away "I didn't hear a no." Y/N says smirking before vanishing into the winds.

"I haven't always been against birthdays. Each one reminds me I'm a year closer to death's cold embrace. What's not to like about that? Besides, my parents always made sure my birthdays were memorable. Wednesday said, remembering her 10th birthday, where she smashed a pinata releasing a horde of live spiders, absolutely horrifying the other children.

Wednesday was now inside the hospital checking on Eugene

"But now parties and presents and games, it... it all feels so trivial. Goody warned me I was destined to be alone, and that I would be sorry for it." she says, someone clears their throat behind her and she turns and rose to see Dr. Kinbott.

"Dr. Kinbott." Wednesday said, and she smiles holding a bouquet of flowers

"I haven't seen you since our session with your family, which was... certainly one I won't forget. How are things with them?"

"My mother and I spent some quality time together. Got our hands dirty."

"Gardening?"

"Grave-digging."

"Hmm."

"And I managed to keep my father out of prison. What brings you here?"

"Eugene's moms, I'm working with them. Trauma like this leaves emotional scars on the whole family. They had to head home for a few days, so I promised I'd check in on him."

"I'll leave you to it." Wednesday goes to leave but Kinbott asks

"Who's Goody?" She asks, Wednesday stops dead in her tracks and turns to face her, "She's a very distant cousin. Very distant."

"Sounds like she doesn't see you for who you really are."

"She sees more than you know. I want to assure you I remain as cold and heartless as the first day we met."

"I doubt a cold, heartless person would be sitting by her friend's bedside feeling guilt for his condition."

"I didn't ask for a free session."

"Consider it my birthday gift." Kimbott says before Wednesday leaves eventually ending up at the coffee shop to sit down and read a book on pilgrims before having it all interrupted by a cup of coffee being gently slid onto the table, which read "Happy Birthday" in the foam as Tyler sat across from her.

"I know you're usually a quad kind of girl, but I've been working on that all week."

"Birthday, yes. Happy, never. Is there anyone Thing didn't tell?"

"Well, who do you think delivered the cake? Yeah, I went with the 98% dark chocolate ganache knowing your... preferred color palette. Oh, is that, uh... that Enid's gift?" Tyler asks, seeing the snood next to Wednesday.

"It's perfect if you're fleeing a war-torn country on foot.

"Come on. Don't you like a day that's all about you?"

"Every day is all about me. This one just comes with cake and a bad song."

"So, if I asked you out to a non-birthday, song-free dinner... would that be something you're interested in?" Tyler says smiling, and Wednesday looks at him, disinterest in her eyes.

"I have a tight deadline. Emphasis on dead."

"Term Paper?" Tyler said

"It's about how whitewashing the sins of our past will come back to kill us all."

"Oh." He says, Wednesday passes him a drawing of a gate.

"Have you seen that before?" She asks

"Uh...What's that supposed to be?"

"Never mind."

"Okay, did... did I do something? I just feel like you've kind of been ghosting me. Am I wrong?" he asks, Wednesday says nothing as a gentle breeze wraps itself around her.

"Guess I got my answer." Tyler replies before going back to work when his father walks in.

"That threat burned onto the lawn at school, it's also etched on the wall inside Crackstone's crypt." Wednesday said to him.

"Don't tell me you've been digging up more bodies."

"There's a connection there. I know it.

"I'll put out an APB on the dead pilgrim."

"I figured since you no longer have an old vendetta to obsess over, you're free to solve some real crime."

"Your father and I buried the hatchet. Maybe you should do the same."

"I don't bury hatchets. I sharpen them."

Xavier was working in his studio painting when Wednesday enter suddenly.

"I need your help. Don't gloat." She says as she hands him the photo as well.

"What, do you want some drawing lessons? Your line work's a little shaky."

"I saw that in a vision. Do you recognize it?" She asks, Xavier shows her a much more detailed version of the drawing.

"When did you draw this?"

"Couple days ago. I started having those dreams again, like before."

"Was the monster in them?"

"No, but I could feel it in the shadows. You know, kind of lurking in my mind."

"You know where this is? Yeah. It's the old Gates mansion. I pass it when I go running. Why?" Before she could answer, however, a covered painting drops down, which was of Wednesday during her cello session. Wednesday just looks at it.

"After the dance, I just wanted to forget about you, but I couldn't. So I started painting and that's what came out. I can hear you up there playing." Xavier raises his hands to it, and the painting comes to life, playing "Cello Concerto in E minor" by Elgar.

"I can tell how you get lost in the music. I feel like it's the only time I get to see the real you." Xavier said and for a second Wednesday was completely lost in the art before snapping back into reality and quickly leaving to continue investigating. Eventually, she ends up at the Gates Manor where she finds the Mayor already there, seemingly on the phone with someone as he made his way to his car.

"Sheriff, pick up your damn phone, it's Noble. Listen, I might have figured out who's behind all of this. It's a long shot. I'm gonna have to lay it out for you. We'll do it over pie at the Weathervane, just like the old days. See you soon." He says entering his car, Wednesday and Thing manage to sneak into the back of his trunk unnoticed as he drives off to the Weathervane, Wednesday watches from the back of the car as the Mayor parks and walks towards the coffee shop only to be completely floored as a car came speeding by running him over much to Wednesday's shock.

Weems was not thrilled to find out that Wednesday as always happened to be at the scene of the crime as she stomped around her office glaring at Wednesday "How do you end up at the center of every terrible thing that happens here?" Weems asks incredibly fed up

"Incredible luck." Wednesday replied nonchalantly much to the ire of Weems

"As of now, the school is on full lockdown, and your off-campus privileges are revoked until further notice" She says coldly, Wednesday stays silent staring at her for a moment before quietly taking her leave towards the dorm of certain Contractor an idea forming in her mind as she knocks on his door and Y/N opens it a smile instantly crawling onto his face as he sees her.

"Hey Wednesday-" He tries to finish but Wednesday quickly cuts him off

"Your offer, I've..reconsidered it" She says a bit of genuine hesitation in her voice, and Y/N glows.

"Awesome, so, does 8'o clock sound good? He asks. Wednesday keeps her focus on his idiotic smile, the feeling in her chest returning as she was seemingly engrossed by it. "But we are gonna have to snake out 'cause of the lockdown, want me to come and get you when it's time?" He asks, she shakes her head.

"No, I have that covered." She says. After leaving Y/N, she decided to reconsider Tyler's plans as well, and the same for Enids. She enters her dorm room and immediately begins.

"I've been thinking about my less-than-enthusiastic response to your surprise soirée. And I must admit, I regret not showing my gratitude towards you more appropriately."

"You really mean it?"

"Take the win, Enid. If only there were a way for us to get off campus and have a little birthday redo. Just two best friends. Too bad the school is on lockdown. Would you look at that full moon..."

"Oh, how about I say I'm about to wolf out and get a pass to the lupin cages? And say you volunteered to lock me in."

"My deviousness has finally rubbed off on you."

"Oh, we should wear our snoods."

"Oh, I... I believe I left mine at fencing."

"Actually, you left yours at the Weathervane. Luckily, Bianca brought it back." Enid says as she hands Wednesday back her Snood, much to the disappointment of Wednesday

"Like a monkey's paw." She says.

The night quickly sets in and Y/N flies out of his room and outside of Nevermore to where Wednesday had wanted to meet, he lands quietly and waits for a moment before a disgustingly familiar and faintly toxic wind wraps around him, a scowl quickly crawls onto his face as he instantly recognized the source alongside a red car.

"What are you doing here Tyler?" He says coldly, and Tyler awkwardly laughs

"Sorry I was, waiting for Wednesday. What are you doing here?"

"None of your business."

"Let's go." Tyler and Y/N jump as Wednesday walks up to them.

"Uh... Uh...Hi. Nice to see you too." He says, Enid then pops out, getting in Tyler's car.

"Wait, he's our Uber driver?"

"Uber driver? I thought we were going on a date."

"Date?" Y/N said, annoyed and shocked

"I thought this was a girls' night out." Enid says to Wednesday who stares forward.

"There's been a change of plans."

"What's up with the weird matching hoodie scarf things?"

"Don't ask. Just drive. Get in." Wednesday says to Y/N, who realizes he's been played, he scoffs and scowls at her "Un fucking believable." He whispers to himself before summoning a wave of dark winds underneath his feet his scowl on her never leaving "Thank's but no thanks I'll be fine flying on my own." He says before taking to the air and following as they drive ahead to the Gates Manor, and stand in front of the gate.

"Seriously, you wanna go in there? This place is creepy AF." Enid says, clearly wanting to be anywhere else.

"I know." Wednesday said.

"So you lied to me about our date...." Y/N said his voice was not gentle, suave, idiotic, or loving like it normally was, it was cold, angry, hurt, and sad. The winds around him grow restless as they build and darken more and more.

"I didn't want to celebrate my birthday by going to dinner or a surprise party. I want to do this."

"Then you shoulda just fucking said that instead of lying and tricking all of us, you know I would've come out here with you regardless!" Y/N fires back a booming wind releasing behind him as he does so, Enid, and Tyler instantly jump back at the noise while Wednesday stands there as Y/N glares at her like he'd never done before the hurt and anger burning in his eyes, a string of regret coiling around her chest before forcing it aside.

"I...If you want to go, you can. I...I'm going to go check the garage." She unlocks the gate and enters, Enid follows alongside Tyler and Y/N does silently. They reach the front of the old manor and left for the garage which doesn't open. Tyler was about to step up and assist her until Y/N bumped shoulders with him. "For fucks sake." With the extension of his arm, Y/N fires a powerful blast of wind that not only blasts apart the door but the entire wall and frame supporting it as well with a loud boom. He turns to Wednesday

"Let's just get this over with." He said as he entered the building, the three other teens could only watch his back for a moment in shock before entering as well. It was dim with crimson red lights inside, but what was most surprising was the blue Cadillac inside.

"This hit the mayor." Wednesday said.

"Okay. This just took a dark turn. We need to call Tyler's dad right freaking now." Enid says scared and worried

"Why? So he can take me back to Nevermore and get me expelled?" Wednesday says and continues forward, Enid and Tyler reluctantly follow while Y/N walked along his care no longer present.

"This is the night I'm gonna die." Tyler says sadly

Enid was shivering in fear and whimpering quietly, Y/N felt her cling to his arm tightly and he instantly breaks from his anger and holds her close. They enter the living room and to the center of the mansion in front of a fireplace and painting.

"Here they are. The Gates family. They scrub up well for psychopaths. There's Garrett, his outcast-hating father, Ansel, and you must be Laurel. They're all long gone. So the question is, why did Goody lead me here?"

"Seen enough?" Tyler asked, and Wednesday continues to look around, noticing that two engravings on the pillars of the wall are off, she presses against one and it moves, the sound of gears turning echoed through the entire mansion, and the painting moves, revealing a mural of Crackstone.

"Who doesn't have a spooky built-in altar in their family library?" Tyler said looking at it.

"Ours is in the living room. More seating for year-long Dia de los Muertos." Wednesday says, Enid continues to freak out more and more and squeezes onto Y/N's arm like a vice, Wednesday turns around and sees them, a hint of anger in her eyes, Y/N slowly moves and meets hers and sees it on full display and for the first time since they got there smirks as she turns back to investigate noticing a set of burned candles.

"They're still warm." Y/N, Tyler, you two check the rest of the ground floor. Enid and I will search upstairs."

"We will?" Enid says looking at Wednesday, she desperately looks at Y/N

"It'll be alright, the faster we check this place the faster we can all leave, if I notice any shift in the winds I promise to fly over to you guys right away." He says, she nods and lets him go. Enid and Wednesday head upstairs and Y/N walks off with Tyler.

"So Wednesday tricked you into coming here with a date t--" Tyler tries to finish but Y/N cuts him off "Don't try to talk to me like we're friends Tyler and especially not about Wednesday." Y/N says coldly and walks past him, Tyler stands there confused.

"Do, you have a problem with me or something?" Tyler said defensively, Y/N stopped dead in his tracks and turned around before slowly walking back to him "Oh, Tyler I don't just have a problem with you, the spirits of the wind have a problem with you too and their a pretty good judge of character as you can see, so let me just make this nice and clear I don't like you. At all and the only reason I haven't done anything about it is because the girl I like thinks otherwise, but here's the thing if it comes down to it and I'm right about you and I have to end you to save her or anyone else I care about, no matter how mad I am at her right now well.." Y/N summons a small ball of dark wind in his hand as he looks into Tyler's eyes smiling "That choice is as easy as breathing" He says coldly but happily and heads to the Kitchen. Upstairs Wednesday and Enid reach a splitting hallway.

"All right, you go left, I go right." Wednesday said.

"You seriously want to split up? In here? That is literally how every best friend dies in a horror movie."

"The faster we search, the sooner you can leave." Wednesday said mimicking Y/N, before Enid walked off.

"Why am I even here? I know what my mom would say. "Enid, you're a doormat." "You're too needy." "Show some teeth. Nobody likes a desperate little furball." Shut up, Mom. Get out of my head!" Enid yells, downstairs Y/N separated from Tyler and was now wandering around searching for any clues that could help Wednesday, before the horrid screams of Tyler ripped into his ears "Tyler! Son of a bitch." He yells and hears growling. Y/N rushes into the living room and follows the winds to find the origin of the sound and when he does...He smiles widely as his eyes glow blood red.

"Finally."
—————

Upstairs Wednesday and Enid begin to head downstairs before the body of the monster came flying through from the bottom floor a barrage of slashes of dark wind tearing into it as it crashed onto the upper floor.

"Ha Ha Ha! Don't think we're done yet monster not a chance in hell, you're dead!" Y/N yells as he laughs manically from downstairs a chill runs down Wednesday's and Enid's spines as a frigged wind washes over them

"The dumbwaiter. Go!" Wednesday and Enid hide inside and shut it tight as the monster recovers and mindlessly rushes towards them scratching the metal plate and scaring both girls inside.

"Oh, my God. Oh my God. Oh my God!" Enid yells terrified, the monster continues to claw and scratch its way toward them, before being flung back slamming into a wall by a powerful blast of wind as Y/N leaps in front of them completely blinded by rage as he glares at the monster a twisted grin plastered across his face.

"I told you already we're not done yet, that first attack was for Eugene.." Y/N says before flinging the monster all across the room it's painful screams like music to his ears, each slam however losing the rope of dumbwaiter more and more each time before Y/N slams the monster onto the floor the pressure of the winds forcing it down like a weight. "That one was for trying to attack both of them...and this one." Y/N closes his fist as a vortex of dark winds surrounds the monster it roars out in agony as it claws at its own throat struggling to breathe.

"This one's all for me." Y/N says coldly the dark winds around him growing out of control as one flies back forcing the dumbwaiters rope to snap, and drop the girls as they scream the sound filling Y/N's ears as he instantly snaps out of his furry turning towards the empty shoot "Wednesday, Enid!" He shouts as his eyes return to normal and he fires a wave of winds down the shoot slowing them down as they crash into the basement and the fighting continues. Y/N narrowly rolls out of the way of the beast's claws before extending his hand and sending it flying.

Enid and Wednesday rush around. They reach an exit and Wednesday looks around, and sees the room filled with jars of severed limbs.

"What are you doing?" Enid yells.

"These are the body parts from the monster's victims." Wednesday said, they hear something being slammed against a wall followed by a booming wind, the monster and Y/N crash down the stairs and Wednesday thankfully escapes out a window with Enid who storms off.

"You okay?"

"Since when do you care?" She says and continues walking off before stopping dead in her tracks and turning back to her eyes wide.

"Y/N's still in there." They said in perfect sync, they rush back to the front and see a trail of blood, they follow it to see Y/N leaning against a tree, a massive slash wound across his side. Tyler is there with faint marks all around his neck, Wednesday quickly rushes to his side.

"You're hurt." She says as a massive wave of guilt washes over her, Y/N sees this and struggles to flash his signature smile for her "Hey...you should see..the other guy." Y/N chuckles a bit before instantly wincing in pain "Oh...Oh, it hurts to laugh." He struggles before being offered a rag by none other than Xavier who seemingly came out of nowhere.

"Where'd you come from?"

"Here. Take this." he and presses the rag into Y/N's side who curses out in pain. Enid watches him tears forming in her eyes. And Wednesday is immediately faced with the reality that all of this was her fault, police lights and sirens flash and echo in the distance as they arrive. But when they check the house there's nothing to be found as if there was never anything in there, to begin with.

"You directly violated my explicit order and left campus during a lockdown. Not to mention putting your peers and yourself in danger." Weems looks down at Wednesday

"Which is grounds for expulsion. I know. And you have every right to exercise that option. I do believe it would be a grave error on your part."

"I think contrition might be in order right now, Miss Addams. Not hubris."

"I'll never apologize for trying to uncover a truth." Wednesday shows her the picture that she had gotten from Rowan.

"What is this?"

"It's a warning from Rowan. Is this why he tried to kill you?"

"His mother drew it before she died. Said I was destined to destroy the school. But I think I'm meant to save it. Now you know what's at stake. Everything you vowed to protect, no less. I think I deserve another chance. Please." Wednesday asks genuinely and as furious as Weems was she believed her.

"One more infraction...One more step out of line and you will be expelled. No ifs, no buts."

"Y/N, Enid and Xavier are spared as well--"

"And no more negotiation. Good night." Weems leaves, and Wednesday goes back to her dorm only to be met by the sight of Enid packing her things in a big red bag on her bed.

"Where are you going?"

"Yoko's room. Thornhill said I could crash there for a few nights." Enid replied not even sparing her a glance

"There's no need. I spoke with Weems. You, Y/N, and Xavier won't be punished."

"Am I supposed to thank you?"

"I already apologized. It's over."

"Over? Tonight was the icing on the birthday cake you couldn't even be bothered to cut. You'll use anyone to get what you want, even if it means putting them in danger. We all could have died tonight because of your stupid obsession."

"But we didn't. And now I'm one step closer to solving this case. That is what is important."

"I've tried really, really, really hard to be your friend. Always put myself out there. Thought of your feelings. Told people, "I know she gives off serial killer vibes, but she's just shy."

"I never asked you to do that--"

"You didn't have to because that's what friends do! They don't have to be asked. The fact that you don't know that says everything. You want to be alone, Wednesday? Be alone!" Enid finishes and angrily leaves with her bag. Wednesday stands there for a moment completely silent, as she looks around the room alone, a storm slowly rolls in as Wednesday sits against the window, the word Goody had said to her echoing in her mind.

"Goody warned I was destined to be alone. Maybe it's inevitable. But for the first time in my life, it doesn't feel good. There's also something else. A gnawing feeling. That death is close at hand. Watching me. But I won't be intimidated. And I will never give up. That house. That family. Crackstone. The monster. Somehow me. We all seem to be connected like a spider's web. And when Mayor Walker got too close to the truth, he was silenced. But I won't be. So whoever's watching me, know this. I will find you."
...
An hour or so had passed and still, Wednesday had not moved from her spot by the window, the questions of if what she had done was right or wrong, the pain she felt for the first time from truly being alone, and the strength of her ambition all clashing within her. Her head tucked into her knees as a familiar and gentle breeze brushed across her face followed by a soft groan as Y/N landed on her balcony using the winds to shield himself from the rain, Wednesday slowly sits up and opens the window for him a small smile come across his face as he sees her.

"Hey...mind if I come i-" He tries to finish but Wednesday quickly cuts him off "What are you doing here Y/N? You shouldn't be in any condition to move." She says coldly, Y/N chuckles

"Yeah well, one of the perks of being The Contractor spirits of the winds won't let me go out that easily. As for why I'm here, I was just in the neighborhood when I heard about this girl whose birthday just so happens to be today but she got no one around to spend it with." He smirks and Wednesday glares at him clearly not in the mood "Y/N I'm in no mood for you--" She tries but this time it was Y/N's turn to cut her off.

"Now it's her fault, she's cold, rude, genuinely heartless at points, if she doesn't like someone or something she gets annoyed right away, when she's angry she doesn't hesitate to swing first if she has to, know it all, liar, manipulator, She's always causing trouble almost leading herself and her friends to die, she's honestly really frustrat--" He tries to finish but Wednesday slams her foot down on his insanely hard Y/N desperately tries to hold in a scream as she looks at him fuming.

"Get.to.point." She demands angrily, Y/N shakingly nods "My point is that even though she's all these things and more at times, she's an amazing person at heart who realizes when she's fucked up and will do whatever it takes to make it right, and someone like that shouldn't be alone on their birthday in my mind, Y/N says and sits down by the window as she did before Wednesday simply stares at him for a moment before sitting beside him

"It's not always nice being alone is it?" He asks

"No...No it's not." She answers

"You feel sorry for all of this?" He says and Wednesday stays silent for a moment before looking at him seriously

"...Yes." She says and he flashes her his signature smile

"Then that's good enough for me" He says and he pulls out a small square black and white container and hands it to her.

"Happy Birthday Wednesday." She stares at it for a moment before opening it revealing a single black dark chocolate cupcake with black frosting and little skull-like sprinkles she.

"Thing told me the kind you like, although I was surprised there even was one I'm no baker so I had to spend days trying to make it just right, that's the real reason I missed your surprise party...and I knew you probably wouldn't like it anyways." He chuckles, Wednesday glances between him and the cupcake it was such an idiotic gesture one she would normally despise but from Y/N that was what she had come to expect and she couldn't help but smile slightly before she took a bite.

"So...how is it?" He asks nervously, she swallows her bite and meets his eyes.

"It's awful...thank you Y/N" She says and Y/N nods as they sit in an apologetic and comforting silence, Wednesday happy she wasn't truly alone.
