Chapter 15: Not sick, just happy
About a month later, married life was absolutely swell. Ichabod still spoiled his wife, buying her all the dresses, jewelry, and accessories she so desired, and every day, he always made sure she was happy. Him buying Serena all these trinkets and gifts was so sweet of him, but ultimately, she just wanted his love and affection. Plus, she didn't want to bleed him dry. In exchange for him spending his money on her, she cooked delicious meals and cleaned the whole house.
But Ichabod being, well, himself, he didn't want her doing all the housework. He felt that it wasn't right for a husband to treat his lady as a maid. So he would help her a lot of the time, even when she didn't expect it. It just made her love and appreciate him more than she already did. God, he was such an attentive and perfect husband. Her constable.
Speaking of Ichabod's work, with the help of Clark, Ichabod was gaining a little more from his co workers, including the judge. They were still hard on him but not as much as before, and Ichabod was so grateful for that. Ichabod had solved many cases, but solving not just the headless horseman case, which took a while for his peers to understand, but also the heart snatcher case, they were, can't believe I am saying this, impressed. Ichabod was a very smart, sophisticated, and hard working man, despite the fact that he fainted at least 3 times a day due to the amount of blood, injuries and scars he witnessed. But not even that would stop him from being a damn good constable, in fact, the best one there was in the office.
Today, Ichabod was downstairs, looking at himself in the mirror and straightening his cravat. It was around 8:00 in the morning and he didn't want to disturb his still sleeping wife. Serena liked to sleep in until about 9:30 which wasn't super late in the morning. She loved her sleep, as did a lot of people.
But Ichabod didn't need to disturb her... not this time. As he was grabbing his bag off the counter, he heard scrambling against the upstairs floorboards, followed by gagging and retching. He quickly ran upstairs, trying not to trip in the process and rushed to the bathroom, where the sound of gagging was. His poor wife was hunched over the toilet, still dressed in her silky blue nightgown, with her arms wrapped around her stomach.
He didn't waste a second in kneeling down beside her, one hand gently pulling her hair into a ponytail to keep it away from her face, the other one rubbing her back in circles. He noticed tears running down her cheeks and he couldn't tell if they were tears of pain or because of her vomiting. It was probably because of both.
"Get it out, Serena. It's alright." He tried to console her, knowing that his words as she vomited her guts out probably didn't help the situation. After vomiting for a good 30 seconds, and spitting into the toilet, she let out a groan as her head hung low, feeling dizzy and lightheaded. He sat up on his knees and pulled out a tissue from the tissue box before handing it to her. She graciously took it and wiped a slight bit of vomit from the corner of her mouth. Ichabod continued to rub her back as he kissed her temple.
I forgot to mention that Serena had been having morning sickness for the past 2 weeks. At first they both thought it was a stomach virus that just wouldn't go away. And for some reason, it was only in the mornings. For the rest of the day, she would be fine, except for a couple nights. She was also experiencing back pain, headaches, and the worst case of nausea. Not to mention feeling like she was going to pass out.
"I can't believe this has been going on for so long now..." Serena groaned once more as Ichabod brushed her hair away from her slightly sweaty face.
"2 weeks isn't necessarily a long time, sweetheart. But when you're sick, I guess it could feel like a lifetime. Come on, let's get you back to bed." He took one of her hands in his while he wrapped his other arm around her waist and he helped her stand up. Her legs wobbled, her eyes barely open with her vision a little blurry. She took a few steps and she stumbled, but Ichabod was quick to catch her and he didn't even think twice in scooping her up bridal style, holding her close.
He carried her to the bed and very gently laid her down, right as Silver came up the stairs, making her way to the couple. She sat down next to Ichabod and whined worriedly, as if figuring out that something was wrong. Ichabod knelt down in front of her and placed a hand on her cheek, stroking it with his thumb.
"I am going to run to work and let them know I won't be able to come in today. Then I will get a doctor and come straight back home. Will you be alright on your own for about 20 minutes?" He asked softly and she rested her hand over his, nodding her head. He then looked at Silver, who rested her chin on the edge of the bed and he rubbed her head.
"She will be okay, Silver. Keep an eye on her for me." Silver just grunted in response and Ichabod quickly kissed Serena's forehead before moving the covers over her body and he stood up, rushing downstairs. Once he left the house, he raced towards the municipal office, trying not to bump into people walking down the sidewalk. It only took him about 5 minutes to get there and once he arrived, he was met with Clark, who was talking with some of the other constables. Clark stopped talking and quickly walked over to his friend, seeing that he was a little out of breath.
"Easy there, man. Is everything alright?" Clark asked and Ichabod quickly caught his breath before answering his question.
"Clark, can you tell the judge I won't be coming in today? Serena hasn't been feeling well the past two weeks, and I need to get a doctor so we can figure this out. I am worried about her." Clark pat his shoulder reassuringly and nodded.
"I got you, man. Tell Serena I hope she get's better and go get the doctor." Ichabod nodded quickly before spinning on his heel and leaving the building. It didn't take long for Ichabod to find a doctor and soon he was back home. He shed off his coat, hanging it on the rack before leading the doctor upstairs, where Serena was still laying down. At the sound of footsteps, Serena's head lifted up slightly, her eyes halfway open and she saw Ichabod with the doctor. Silver was laying down at the foot of the bed, her head tilted to the side and her ears perked up.
"Hello there, miss. What seems to be the problem?" The doctor asked kindly as he set his bag down beside him, while Ichabod sat down behind Serena, resting a hand on her side in comfort. Serena slid her hand over his, her arm now wrapped around her waist and she started to speak.
"I've been getting morning sickness every day for the past two weeks. Vomiting, nausea, dizziness, um... back pain. Then for the rest of the day, except for a couple nights, I feel fine. I just don't know what's wrong with me..." She whispered as her eyes welled up, Ichabod moving his hand from her side to her back, rubbing it cautiously. The doctor nodded his head as he knelt down in front of her, thinking for a moment.
"Now, this question is a little awkward for me to ask... but have you missed your monthly?" He asked and Serena thought for a second, her eyes widening in shock. She had totally forgotten about that. And now that she thought about it, it was starting to make sense.
"I was due to start two weeks ago..." Was all she said and the doctor nodded his head.
"Roll onto your back for me. Is it alright if I place my hands on your stomach so I can feel around?" He said softly and she complied, maneuvering herself so she was now on her back, with her arms at her sides. The doctor sat up on his knees, and very carefully placed his hands on her stomach, while Serena glanced up at Ichabod, who reached down and grasped her hand, lacing their fingers together. The doctor felt around her stomach, the room falling quiet as they both waited for an answer. After a minute or so, maybe a little less, the doctor smiled brightly and removed his hands.
"Just as I suspected... congratulations to you both. You're going to be parents!"
At that moment, Serena carefully sat up, her back propped against the pillows and her eyes began to water. But this time, they weren't of pain. No, they were tears of joy. No wonder she had been feeling this way for two weeks. She was with child, her child... Ichabod's child. Ichabod tried so hard not to pass out from shock, as he looked at his wife, his own eyes stinging with tears. Ichabod's hand, which started to shake, reached forward and rested on his wife's stomach, Serena's coming up over his.
"We're going to have a baby.." Serena began to sob happily as her other hand covered her mouth, Ichabod moving so he was sitting down beside her and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, his hand cradling her head and his lips pressing to her temple. They couldn't believe it! They were expecting a child! They feared for the worst, but now, that fear was washed away, and replaced with joy. The doctor smiled warmly before grabbing his bag and standing up on his feet.
"Seeing you two so happy, makes me so happy. So consider no charge." As Serena cried in her husband's arms, Ichabod extended his hand out and the two men shook. The doctor then pat Serena's shoulder before leaving the bedroom and exiting the house. Ichabod held her close to his chest as their hands rubbed her stomach. They had dreamed about this moment, and now, it was finally happening.
"Oh Ichabod... I was so worried. I thought the doctor was going to diagnose me with something horrible. But then, when he asked the question about my... you know... it all clicked in my brain. You have no idea how happy I am, my love. I have been dreaming about this since I was a teenager." She cried happily and Ichabod smiled, his free hand running through her hair.
"I was worried too, darling. But now, we know it's going to be alright. And I promise you..." He cupped her face in his hands and rested his forehead against hers. "I will be the best father that I can be. I will always be there for you and our child. I am not going to be like my father and hurt the both of you in any way, shape or form." He whispered and she grinned through tears. His words were so reassuring and she knew that he meant every single one. She could only imagine how horrible his father was, especially the things Ichabod would tell her about him. No parent should ever treat their child badly and they weren't going to let anything nasty happen.
"I believe you, my love. You are going to be a wonderful father, I just know it." Serena then called for Silver, who came immediately and sat down beside her, tilting her head to the side in confusion.
"You are going to be a big sister... we have a baby growing inside me and we are going to have a new addition to the family." Serena rested her hand on her stomach and Silver just looked at her, still confused as to what she was saying. And it just made them chuckle. As Silver rested her chin on the bed, Serena scratched behind her ear before looking back at her husband with a smile, her head hitting his shoulder. Tears streamed down their cheeks as they held each other close, Ichabod resting his chin on top of her head, with each of their hands on her stomach.
Parenthood was going to involve a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns in every direction. But despite that, They were going to be the best parents that they could be.
WOOOOOHOOO THEY ARE PREGNANT! I know this chapter is a little short and it probably will be like that for the rest of the story. There will most likely be about 2-3 more chapters, one of them maybe including one more spicy time hehe. I already know what the gender and name will be, and I am so excited! We are almost to the end, which makes me sad because I really love this story. But, I have a Sweeney Todd story that I will continue when I am done with this one, and I have been thinking about doing a twilight love story, and no it's not with edward. Mother's day is this weekend so have a wonderful mother's day and give your mamas all the love in the world!
