Chapter 12: At long last

7 months later, Ichabod, Serena, and Silver were as happy as can be, with Ichabod being right about his girlfriend loving New York. She had grown accustomed to the new lifestyle, fairly quickly I might add. The people at the shops knew who she was, bright smiles on their faces whenever she walked in, whether she was with Ichabod or by herself. Mostly with Ichabod.

He spoiled her every single day, not always in the form of buying her new clothes, jewelry, etc, but just giving her all the love and attention he had to offer, even going the extra mile. Ichabod loved spoiling and treasuring his girlfriend, wanting to give her the whole world. He would do anything to protect her, to make sure she was safe, happy and adored in every way possible.

Serena felt the exact same way. She had bought Ichabod many trinkets and gifts with the money he gave her, but she just wanted to give him her heart and soul. She wanted to please him in any way, to let him know that she would always be by his side, loving and respecting him with all she had. She was his witch and he was her constable.

And today was a special day. It was their 7 month anniversary. And they both wanted to make it special. Ichabod already had the day planned out; first, he was going to take her to a nice dinner. There was a very nice Italian restaurant, that Ichabod had taken her to within the first month of them moving to New York. It was now her favorite restaurant so it was only fitting that he take her there and let her order whatever it is she wanted.

Next, he was going to take her somewhere special, and I won't say where until later. But it was going to be so special, so perfect. And he was going to do something he thought he was never going to do. He was nervous, but also very excited. This was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, to have a family and grow old together.

But again, details later. Right now, Serena was sitting on the couch, reading one of her favorite books, with Silver laying down beside her, her head in her lap. With one hand holding her book, her other hand rested on Silver's head, her fingers scratching behind her ear. She was waiting for Ichabod to get home from work, wanting to celebrate their anniversary. She had gotten a little something special for him so he could either open it when he got home, or when they went to dinner. She knew they were going to eat that night, but he didn't tell her where, or if they were doing anything after. Nonetheless, she was excited that they were going to celebrate it together.

Silver let out a yawn before whining softly, Serena looking down and moving her hand down to her belly and rubbing it, running her fingers through her fur. "Ichabod will be home soon, sweetie. Don't you worry, you furball." She teased and Silver grunted before nuzzling her head against her lap. Serena just chuckled before continuing to read her book, wondering when Ichabod would get home. Typically, his shifts were the same, but once in a while, he would have to work overtime, especially if he was deep in a case that he was so close to figuring out. But he knew not to leave his witch waiting.

And as if on cue, the unlocking of the door was heard, both Silver and Serena's head moving to the direction of the door, which opened, revealing Ichabod with his bags in his hands, including a small purple bag. Wait, purple? He didn't usually carry a purple bag...

Silver immediately got down from the couch and rushed over to Ichabod, putting her front paws on Ichabod knees right after he closed the door. He smiled as he set his bags down on the ground before kneeling down and rubbing Silver's head, making her pant happily.

"Were you a good girl? Did you protect my lady?" He asked and Silver barked, Serena giggling and shaking her head. She loved how much Ichabod looked out for her and her safety, but she was a witch, she could protect herself. But the extra protection from her boyfriend, now she wasn't going to pass that up.

"She protected me so much, darling. She was a good girl today. How was work, and why do you have that purple bag?" She asked with a small giggle, Ichabod grabbing the bag and making his way over to the sofa, sitting down beside her. They leaned forward and pressed a kiss to each other's lips, savoring the warmth and love already felt. Every time Ichabod came home from work, the first thing he would do was kiss her. Even if he worked overtime and got home late when she was sleeping, he would kiss her forehead to let her know that he was home. And she loved that.

"Work was alright, darling. The judge's little... sidekick, so to speak, kept hammering down on me, telling me I needed to work harder on a specific case, when I had been working my tail off to begin with. Clark was there to help, which was greatly appreciated and I was able to get through my shift. As far as this bag goes, this is just a little something for you. Happy anniversary, my love." Her heart melted as she cupped his face in her hands and kissed his cheek, Ichabod loving the softness and tenderness of her lips.

"Oh Ichabod, you didn't have to get me anything. But, I did get you something today too, while you were at work. I wasn't sure what to get you, but something did catch my eye and I had a strong feeling you were going to like this." She smiled before reaching into her dress pocket and pulling out a small black box with a white bow. Ichabod blushed as he carefully took the box from her hands and kissed her forehead. He then opened the box and his eyes widened. Inside was a silver and black melded ring, exactly his size and in gold writing, it read.

"You are my forever." His eyes started watering as he read the engraving on the ring, taking it out of the box and placing it on his left index finger. He then took Serena's hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze as his other arm wrapped around his shoulders.

"I absolutely love it, Serena. It's perfect, and I love you so much. Now, open yours, my sweet." He let go of her hand and kept his arm around her shoulders while she reached into the bag and pulled out a red box, a little bigger than the one she gave him. She opened it and a small gasp left her lips. Inside was a silver chained necklace, with a diamond pendant in the shape of a heart. She had been eyeing it for quite sometime whenever they went shopping and now, it was in her hands.

"Oh Ichabod, you remembered..." She smiled brightly as she carefully took the necklace out of the box, handing it to Ichabod so he could place it around her neck while she held her hair up and out of the way. Once the necklace was placed, she gently traced the pendant with her thumb as she turned around and wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her forehead against his.

"I could see that you wanted it and I wanted to see if it would be there on the day of our anniversary. And today, when I was walking home, it was conveniently displayed in the front window, so I knew I couldn't disappoint. Do you like it?" He asked which he knew was a stupid question. But he still wanted to hear her words. She nodded her head as she tangled one hand in her hair, her lips quickly pecking his.

"I absolutely love it, constable. You spoil me so much..." She giggled and he placed his hands on her shoulders, chuckling to himself.

"Well, this is only just the beginning. I know I told you we were going out to dinner tonight, but I didn't tell you where. I wanted it to be a surprise but I can't hold it back any longer. We are going to go to that Italian restaurant you loved so much the first time we went."

Her blue eyes glimmered with excitement, her smile widening as she squealed happily, wrapping her arms around him and knocking him down onto the sofa. She was now on top of him with his hands on her waist, holding her close to his chest.

"OOooh I am so excited! I am going to get ready right now!" She quickly kissed his cheek then his lips before getting up off of him and rushing upstairs, almost tripping in the process, which left Ichabod to sit up and chuckle, shaking his head. It warmed his heart seeing his girl so happy, especially knowing it was because of him. He never wanted to make her sad, and he was going to do everything he could to prevent that from happening.

Ichabod was waiting downstairs, dressed even nicer than he already was with his hair combed through, his clothes nice and pressed, with the ring she gave him still on his finger. He thought it was so sweet of her to buy him something, even though the money he gave her was hers to spend. It just showed how thoughtful she really was. Silver was sitting down next to him, patiently waiting for her owner.

"Sweetheart, are you almost ready? We don't want to be late for our dinner!" He called out and before he could ask anything else, his question was answered. Serena walked down the stairs, holding onto the railing so she wouldn't miss a step and slip. When she reached the bottom of the stairs, Ichabod's jaw dropped to the floor. Not literally, that was physically impossible.

Serena donned a beautiful lavender dress, with flowy sleeves that stopped at the elbow, the dress fading to a darker purple on the skirt, with a white bow in her hair, which was partly up. Her makeup was simple, but absolutely stunning, with her lips as pink as usual. She was also wearing the necklace that Ichabod bought for her and seeing how beautiful she looked, he grinned from ear to ear as she gave a little twirl.

"Do you like it, my love?" She asked and he walked towards her, taking her hands in his and giving them a gentle squeeze. He always loved what she wore, thinking she was beautiful no matter what. He was the only woman for him and he was going to prove that to her every single day.

"You're absolutely gorgeous, my dear. Shall we go?" She smiled as she slid her hand through the crook of his arm while he opened the door. Silver just tilted her head, whining softly. She always hated it whenever they left. To her, it felt like they had been gone for years. Serena chuckled as she reached down and scratched under her chin.

"We will be back soon, furball. Be a good girl and protect our house, okay?" She barked in response as Serena looked up at Ichabod, pressing her lips against his cheek.

"You look handsome, by the way." She complimented and Ichabod smiled warmly as he closed the door before they made their way to the restaurant. This was going to be an amazing night.

At the restaurant, they were immediately sat down at a table outside, the gentle breeze blowing through their hair. Thank god it wasn't snowing today. Even though they liked the snow, Ichabod didn't want anything to ruin their special day. They looked over the menu, everything sounding so delicious. The waiter brought them two glasses of water, asking if they wanted some champagne. They both said yes and it wasn't long before they were brought two flutes of champagne. They ordered their food before Ichabod grabbed his glass and held it towards Serena.

"To us, my love." She giggled as she lifted her glass and they clinked together before they took a sip, feeling the bubbles fill their mouth and run down their throat. They talked and talked until their food arrived, which looked absolutely scrumptious. Ichabod had gotten a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs, and Serena got a bowl of spaghetti as well, but it just had butter and some garlic. (I really don't know what kind of pasta the 1800s had, so do NOT COME AFTER ME LOL)

Once they ate their food, the waiter asked if they wanted dessert, but they were already too full. Maybe they would stop for ice cream on the way home. They were given the check and Ichabod paid, giving the waiter a nice tip, which he greatly appreciated.

"Are you ready to go my sweet? We still have one more stop." He said and she playfully raised an eyebrow. What else did he have planned for them? He already bought her a necklace, a wonderful and delicious dinner, what was up now? But she didn't question him as she nodded her head with a smile, and he grabbed her hand, helping her stand up and they left the restaurant. Serena wondered where he was taking her, but the thrill of wondering just made her more excited.

Once they got close to their destination, Ichabod stopped walking and stepped in front of her, both hands holding hers. "Close your eyes, my love." He whispered and she obeyed, her eyes fluttering shut as she squeezed his hands.

"You better not let me trip, constable." She teased and he chuckled, slowly walking backwards, her moving forward. She trusted him with her life, and so did Ichabod. He would never let her fall, not in a million years. As they walked, Serena could feel grass under her boots, and she gasped quietly. Where the hell was he taking her? She wasn't scared, far from it actually. But she was mostly confused. After a good minute or so, they stopped walking and Ichabod, still holding her hands, took a deep breath and slowly knelt down to the ground, Serena not being able to se anything since her eyes were still closed.

"Okay, you can open your eyes now." He said softly and she did as told, looking around her surroundings, her heart melting. He had taken her to a beautiful meadow, but not just any meadow. It was where they had their first date when they arrived to New York. The grass was a beautiful shade of green, with purple and white flowers littered around, the moon and stars shining brightly in the midnight blue sky. She then looked at Ichabod, seeing him kneeling down and he looked nervous.

"Ichabod..." her eyes watered as he gently squeezed her hands, his brown eyes gazing into hers. This was the big moment, and he hoped he wasn't going to fuck it up.

"S-Serena... my first day in Sleepy Hollow, you rescued me. You helped me heal in so many ways. The first kiss we shared, I do wish we both weren't so sad but I am so glad we kissed. You brighten my life with your smile, your kindness, devotion, and love. I promised to give you everything you deserve, to love and protect you with my life, and to make sure you are always happy."

Tears were falling down her cheeks as her bottom lip quivered, her heart racing in her chest. God damnit she loved Ichabod so much. She quietly choked on her tears and before she could ask anything, he let go of her hands and reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a black box and opening it. Inside was a beautiful silver flower banded ring, with a heart shaped diamond in the middle. Serena covered her mouth with her hands as Ichabod's eyes watered, taking a deep breath.

"Serena Woods, will you marry me?" Serena fell to her knees at those words and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, hugging him tightly. Still holding the box, he held her close to his chest, running his fingers through her hair.

'Y-yes yes, a thousand times yes!!" She sobbed happily and Ichabod couldn't contain his tears any longer. They both cried in each other's arms, Ichabod kissing her temple repeatedly before slightly pulling away and taking a hold of her hand. He took the ring out of the box and slid it onto her left ring finger. Serena glanced at the ring, admiring how perfectly it fit around her finger and how it sparkled in the moonlight. She then cupped his face in her hands and kissed him, his arms wrapping around her waist as one hand cradled the back of her head. They passionately kissed for a good minute before they pulled away for air, resting their foreheads together.

"You have no idea how happy you just made me, constable. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you." She whispered and he grinned through tears, wondering to himself how he got so damn lucky. When Katrina left, he thought he would never fall in love again. Now, he was engaged to the love of his life, who he met in Sleepy Hollow, and he knew, in his heart, that this was going to last forever. He reached down and brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles.

"We will be together forever, my dear witch. You're everything to me." He whispered before kissing her once more under the moonlight, both on their knees and enveloped in each other's arms. Nothing was going to tear them apart; absolutely nothing.

I felt so happy writing this chapter! They are now engaged, woohoo!! Hopefully I can get another chapter in later in the week! I want to be in love with somebody, but who would want me? LOL!
