Chapter 60: A Walk In The Park
As (y/n) sat on a bench in the park, she hummed a tune, allowing the gentle breeze to envelop her and ease her body's tension. She absentmindedly tossed a stick for Kenta, her loyal Shikoku pup. With a soft whine, the energetic dog returned, indicating that the stick had broken into several pieces.
Not one to be deterred, (y/n) stood up on her crutches, whistling for Kenta to join her. "Come on, buddy," she called out. "Let's find you a new stick to play with."
Kenta barked in agreement and followed (y/n) as they ventured through the park in search of a suitable replacement. However, using her crutches soon wore her out, and she grumbled under her breath at the inconvenience. Just as she was about to give up, a smile brightened her face as she spotted a perfectly sized stick for Kenta up ahead.
Bending down awkwardly, (y/n) struggled to maintain her balance on one leg while reaching for the stick. After a few attempts, she finally managed to grasp it, triumphantly waving it around for Kenta. But her victory was short-lived as an ear-splitting screech pierced her eardrums, causing her to wince in pain.
"(Y/n)-chan! What happened?! Oh my god, you poor thing!" A familiar voice exclaimed.
In a matter of seconds, (y/n) found herself being lifted off the ground and pulled into a strong chest as the stranger expressed his concern. Looking up, she realized it was none other than Oikawa, though he appeared at a loss for words when a ball was suddenly chucked at his head. Startled, (y/n) tumbled to the ground, with Oikawa still clutching onto her.
As she rubbed her sore behind, (y/n) turned her gaze towards the approaching figures of Kindaichi and Iwaizumi, who seemed to be scolding Oikawa. Blushing beet red, Iwaizumi's eyes widened when he saw (y/n) looking back at him, her crutches resting on the ground.
Concern etched on his face, Iwaizumi rushed over to help (y/n) stand, guiding her to a nearby bench while instructing Kindaichi to retrieve her crutches. Once seated, the third-year settled next to her, carefully placing her injured ankle on his lap.
"Damn, I'm sorry, (y/n)-san," he apologized sincerely. "Are you alright? I had no idea Trashykawa was running towards you."
"I'm fine, Iwaizumi-senpai," (y/n) reassured him with a small smile. "My butt's a little sore from being dropped, but other than that, I'm perfectly fine."
"How can you say that when you're on crutches, (y/n)-chan?!" Oikawa screeched, joining them on the bench. "And your beautiful face has a bandage on it!"
As Oikawa leaned in closer to inspect her ankle and forehead, (y/n) swatted his hand away and covered her cut with the cloth once more. Snickering, she teased him, while Kindaichi and Iwaizumi exchanged amused glances, silently acknowledging Oikawa's knack for overreacting.
"Here, (y/n)-chan, I'll hug you better!" Oikawa exclaimed, leaning in for an embrace.
But before he could reach her, Iwaizumi intervened, pulling him back and tossing him away with a mix of annoyance and anger. The ace and Kenta joined in, barking furiously and shaking their heads at Oikawa's foolishness. Seizing the opportunity, Kindaichi took a seat beside (y/n), feeling slightly awkward, and handed her the leash she had dropped during the commotion. He couldn't help but notice the grateful look in her eyes as she secured the leash and gave Kenta a gentle pat on the head.
"Thanks, Kindaichi," (y/n) said appreciatively, her voice warm and sincere. "You're always there to lend a hand."
Kindaichi smiled, feeling a surge of warmth at her words. He had always admired (y/n) from afar, and now, being able to help her in some way brought him a sense of fulfillment. Wanting to understand what had happened, he leaned closer, his voice filled with concern.
"Sorry about them. How did this happen anyway?" he asked, his gaze fixed on her as if he wanted to protect her from any harm.
With a soft sigh, (y/n) began recounting the events of her midnight stroll with the boys, leaving out the fact that it had taken place during a training camp. As she finished, she could see a fire of indignation burning in Kindaichi's eyes.
"That jerk didn't even stop to make sure you were okay?!" he exclaimed, his voice laced with frustration. "What a prick! At least Kenta was able to bark to warn you."
Nervously, the lanky first-year reached down, his fingers trembling slightly, and intertwined them with (y/n)'s. His grip tightened, conveying his genuine concern and care as he whispered shyly, "But I'm glad you're alright."
Blushing, (y/n) returned the squeeze, feeling a flutter of excitement and comfort from the connection. Her gaze met his, and she couldn't help but smile, her heart feeling lighter in his presence.
Deciding to ease the tension and make the moment less awkward, (y/n) took a deep breath and spoke, her voice filled with a playful tone.
"Yeah, I'm just mad I have to be on crutches, but I'm still happy it wasn't worse," she chirped. "It's sweet of you to be so worried about me, though, Kindaichi."
Kindaichi's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red, his shy smile revealing his genuine nature. "Well, someone has to be, right? And it's not every day I get to rescue a damsel in distress."
They both chuckled, their laughter echoing in the serene surroundings of the park. In that moment, it felt as if time had slowed down, allowing them to appreciate the connection they were building. The conversation flowed effortlessly between them, filled with shared interests, dreams, and stories that made their bond grow stronger with each passing minute.
As their laughter subsided, more wails were heard, drawing their attention. Oikawa shuffled back over to them, away from the glares his best friend, Iwaizumi, sent him. Kindaichi huffed in annoyance over his ruined moment, releasing (y/n)'s hand to make room for his senpai.
After a few minutes, the two third-years settled down, along with Kenta, who had found a new playmate in Kindaichi. (Y/n) retold the story to both Oikawa and Iwaizumi, with Oikawa exaggerating his expressions and hugging (y/n) tightly as tears streamed comically down his face. Iwaizumi simply stated that he was glad (y/n) was alright while awkwardly trying to hide his blush and pry his friend off of her.
Eventually, (y/n) started walking with the three Aoba Johsai boys. Kindaichi offered to play with Kenta so (y/n) could relax, and soon he was off running around with the energetic pup. This left (y/n) with Oikawa on one side and Iwaizumi on the other, the gentle breeze caressing their faces as they strolled through the park.
However, Iwaizumi suddenly excused himself to use the restroom, leaving (y/n) alone with Oikawa. Sensing an opportunity, Oikawa smoothly wrapped his arm around (y/n)'s shoulders, pulling her closer to him.
"My poor (y/n)-chan! You're so brave," Oikawa exclaimed, his voice filled with exaggerated concern. "I hope you'll get better soon, though." Leaning close to her ear, he purred mischievously, his words dripping with playful intent. "If you want, I can be your personal doctor, (y/n)-chan. I can kiss your boo-boos all better."
(Y/n) squeaked, her cheeks flushing as Oikawa's breath tickled her ear. She could practically feel the smirk on his lips, and it reminded her of the Oikawa she had witnessed during intense matches—an undeniable mix of cunning and determination to get what he wanted.
Laughing awkwardly, (y/n) shuffled away, sighing in relief when she caught sight of Iwaizumi returning. With a sense of relief, she awkwardly hobbled closer to the ace, hoping her visage was no longer red. Oikawa, sensing the shift in atmosphere, puffed out his cheeks in annoyance and stated that he was going to get a drink, giving them some space. Oikawa puffed out his cheeks in annoyance, stating he was going to get a drink.
A small wave of relief washed over (y/n) as she realized she had been saved from the indomitable force that Oikawa could be. From watching his matches and observing his behaviors, she knew that when he got like that, it meant he wasn't going to back down easily. Despite his charm, she felt a mix of apprehension and curiosity about what his true intentions might be.
An awkward cough caught her attention, drawing her gaze to Iwaizumi. Peeking over, (y/n) saw him scratching the back of his neck, his dark eyes looking at everything but her. His nervousness was palpable as he mustered the courage to speak.
"H-hey, um, do you want me to carry your bag?" he asked, his voice slightly shaky. "It looks pretty heavy, and it can't be comfortable with those crutches."
(Y/n)'s eyes shimmered with gratitude at the kind gesture of the dark-haired teen. Nodding her head, she handed over her bag, thanking him once more for his thoughtfulness. As their arms brushed against each other, a faint blush tinted Iwaizumi's cheeks. Swallowing his nerves, he glanced around, making sure his teammates weren't in earshot.
"Um, I was wondering, (y/n)-san... Would you, um, maybe like to, uh... hang out sometime?" Inhaling a huge breath, the ace stuttered out his question in a single breath, his words rushing out in a jumble. "H-hang out, I mean. We could hang out here, at the park or something, a-and I cou-could help you watch Kenta."
(Y/n) couldn't help but smile warmly at the nervous third-year. Iwaizumi's chocolate orbs refused to meet hers as he tugged at his jacket, clearly waiting anxiously for her response. The sound of her laughter caught his attention, making his heart skip a beat. Timidly peeking over at her, he saw (y/n) nodding her head, her smile widening.
"I'd like that, Iwaizumi-senpai," (y/n) declared, her voice filled with sincerity. "You're fun to hang out with."
"R-really!? Gr-great. Awesome," Iwaizumi stuttered, his excitement evident in his words. His face lit up with a giant grin, and he couldn't contain his joy. "Uh, yeah, so, I'll just text you sometime."
(S/n) nodded in agreement, her own smile mirroring his. "Sure!"
Smiling once more, (y/n) whistled for Kenta, who came bounding over, panting from their playtime. Kindaichi followed close behind, while Oikawa returned with his drink, complaining that (y/n) was leaving. With a sense of farewell, (y/n) attached Kenta's leash and waved goodbye to the three teens, giving each of them a small hug before turning to leave.
"I'll see you boys at our next match," (y/n) called out to them with a playful tone.
"Be prepared, (y/n)-chan. We have some surprises of our own for the next match," Oikawa stated confidently, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips.
"Oh, good. I'd hate for it to be boring," (y/n) purred, winking at the three boys before turning away from them.
What she didn't see was their collective shock and near-fainting, with Iwaizumi still trying to calm himself down after the exhilarating moment of having her agree to hang out with him.
"Iwa-chan, calm down. It's not like she was winking at you," Oikawa taunted, knowing full well the effect his words had on his best friend.
"Shut it Trashykawa." Iwaizumi got ready to fight his team captain again, still unable to hide the growing smile on his face. He was already mentally preparing himself for the exhilarating journey ahead, filled with matches, laughter, and the possibility of a deeper connection with (y/n).
"Not the face Iwa-chan!" Oikawa screeched in return.
