Chapter 58: Nasty Medicine

"Lev!" the senior Nekoma coach called out, beckoning the lanky teenager over. "Come keep Spitfire company. You've played in all the practice matches so far, so sitting out for one won't kill you."

Lev nodded eagerly, flashing a mischievous smirk at the other boys, who reciprocated with glares. Settling down next to (y/n), his gaze remained fixed on her, oblivious to the ongoing matches. His single-minded focus on (y/n) garnered playful eye rolls and teasing remarks from their teammates, but Lev paid them no mind. He was determined to capture her undivided attention.

As the matches progressed, it became increasingly apparent that Lev had no intention of diverting his gaze from (y/n). While she diligently jotted down notes and engaged in lighthearted banter, he sat beside her, captivated by her presence. However, his desire for exclusive attention got the better of him. With lightning speed, Lev snatched her papers away and playfully placed them out of reach on the bench.

"Lev, come on," (y/n) pouted, her voice tinged with faux annoyance. "I need those!"

"Nope!" Lev responded, his eyes twinkling mischievously. "You already did all your work at the hospital. Your brother told us. So now, you're going to sit here, relax, and let me make you smile."

Unable to resist the infectious charm of Lev's outburst, (y/n) couldn't help but chuckle. She acquiesced, turning towards him to give him her full attention. His emerald eyes lit up with excitement at her response. Lev scooted back on the bench and retrieved a volleyball.

"I know you want to move around," Lev began, a playful grin adorning his face, "so why don't we pass the ball back and forth? It's safe and enjoyable."

The sparkle in (y/n)'s (e/c) eyes confirmed her eagerness to join in the fun. They started by rolling the ball between each other, maintaining a steady conversation as they did. The atmosphere brimmed with laughter and lighthearted banter. However, the playful exchange soon escalated into a more challenging game.

A mischievous gleam danced across (y/n)'s lips as she eyed her trusted crutches. Determination radiated from her as she grabbed them, tossing one to Lev, who caught it with ease. It was an unspoken agreement—they were about to embark on a new and exciting adventure.

With crutch in hand, (y/n) took on a modified stance, ready to face the challenge. Lev mirrored her posture, his competitive spirit ignited. The gym fell into a hush as their teammates observed the duo, eagerly awaiting the display of skill and camaraderie.

The game began, their volley sending the ball soaring back and forth between them. Despite the added difficulty, (y/n) exhibited remarkable agility and adaptability, her determination shining through each swing of the crutch. Lev, equally enthusiastic, matched her energy, their synchronized movements a testament to their growing connection.

"...Umm, Coach?" Yamaguchi spoke up, his voice laced with concern.

Keishin turned his attention to the freckled boy, his brows furrowing. "What is it, Yamaguchi?"

"I think (y/n)-san is trying to break her crutches," Yamaguchi explained, his words accompanied by a worried frown. "Or maybe Lev, I'm not sure. Also, isn't it time for her medicine?"

Keishin's eyes widened as he followed Yamaguchi's gaze. The sight before him nearly caused him to faint. (Y/n) and Lev were wielding the crutches like baseball bats, using them to pass the volleyball between each other. It was a clear sign that (y/n) was growing restless, pushing the boundaries of the game to extremes. With every swing, there was a near-miss, each player swinging anyway, their competitive spirit overriding caution.

In a fit of exasperation, Keishin hollered at both of them, grabbing a spare ball and hurling it at Lev for letting (y/n) get away with such antics.

"Don't let her do that!" Keishin shouted, his voice filled with urgency. "She's just trying to get you to let her move around more than she's allowed to by breaking the crutches. If she succeeds, she'll have to hop around! So stop it! Also, give her that medicine now. It's in the bag by the bench. Fair warning, though—she will fight you. The nurses had to deal with it too."

"No, please!" (y/n) whined, her expression turning pleading. "They make me drowsy!"

"I don't care," Keishin stated firmly, his tone brooking no argument. "Lev, if you have to, pin her down and get those damn pills or whatever into her mouth. She tries to spit them out because they taste bad, apparently, but she has to chew them."

Lev nodded, his gaze fixed on (y/n) with a mix of determination and mischief. He swiftly snatched both crutches, his lanky frame launching at her with a wild howler monkey war cry. Long limbs wrapped around her, carefully restraining her movements. (Y/n) protested, squirming and wailing for someone to come to her aid, but their teammates simply observed, aware that Lev was doing what needed to be done.

"I know this sounds awful because she's injured," Yamamoto chimed in, a playful smile tugging at his lips, "but she looks so cute when she's pouting."

"Yeah, but I wouldn't want to be the one giving Kitten her medicine, eh Bokuto?" Kuroo interjected, sharing a knowing glance with his friend.

"Nope!" Bokuto agreed, his expression a mix of amusement and sympathy. "But I'll make sure to cheer her up afterward!"

The others nodded in agreement, a hint of jealousy mingling with their relief that it wasn't their task to coax (y/n) into taking the unpleasant pill.

"It's meant to help you, (y/n)-san!" Lev tried to reason, his voice filled with genuine concern.

"They taste horrible and make me drowsy!" (y/n) argued, her frustration evident. "I won't take them!"

Lev's expression turned sad yet undeniably adorable as he looked down at her. "Please, (y/n)-san," he pleaded softly, his voice laced with sincerity. "If you don't take them, you'll be in pain again. I don't want to see you like that. Seeing you hurt like this makes me sad."

'Dammit.' (y/n) grumbled inwardly, knowing she had lost the battle when Lev spoke those heartfelt words. How could she say no to him when he expressed his feelings so earnestly?

Groaning, she reluctantly opened her mouth and allowed Lev to place the pill on her tongue. Her whole face contorted with disgust as she chewed and swallowed the medicine, quickly guzzling down the water Lev passed to her.

"Thank you, (y/n)-san," Lev whispered in her ear, his warm breath sending a shiver down her spine. He gently pulled her down, her head coming to rest on his lap, offering her comfort and support.

As the effects of the medicine took hold, (y/n) succumbed to drowsiness, her eyelids growing heavy. She drifted off to sleep, the rhythmic rise and fall of Lev's chest beneath her head providing a soothing lullaby.

"Alright, now I want to be in his position," Kuroo voiced his envy, his eyes fixed on the serene scene unfolding before him.

"Agreed," the others chimed in, their expressions filled with a mixture of longing and contentment as they observed the tender moment between (y/n) and Lev.

...

With their bags all packed, (y/n) bid farewell to the coaches and players from the other teams. Each player checked on her, ensuring that she was okay to travel. Kenta, nestled in Inuoka's arms, let out a howl as he said goodbye to his "papa."

"Relax, guys," (y/n) reassured her friends, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "We'll be back here in two weeks for another training camp."

"But I'll miss you, (y/n)-san!" Bokuto wailed, his face contorted with mock sadness.

Chuckling, (y/n) pulled the energetic boy into a warm hug and exchanged numbers with him and a few other newfound friends.

"There, now we can keep in touch," (y/n) said, her eyes sparkling with genuine warmth.

Waving goodbye, (y/n) made her way back to the Karasuno team, her bags securely stowed in Saeko's car, as she had offered to give (y/n) a ride.

"Alright, I'll see you all back at the school," (y/n) called out to the boys, her voice filled with a mix of excitement and fondness. "Have a safe trip!"

"We should be saying that to you, (y/n)-san," Tanaka chimed in with a mischievous grin. "I make no guarantees about your safety or comfort when traveling with my sister."

"Haha, don't worry, Ryuu," Saeko reassured him, placing her hand on (y/n)'s shoulder. "I'm extra careful when (y/n)-chan is in my car."

"I'll be fine, Tanaka-senpai!" (y/n) exclaimed with a confident smile, eager to embark on the journey with Saeko.

Another round of goodbyes ensued as the teams went their separate ways, anticipating the reunion in two weeks' time. As (y/n) settled into the car, her thoughts drifted,  a familiar smirk adorning her lips.

'I wonder if they realized I switched that nasty medicine out for candy earlier. I'm not taking that ever again.'
