Chapter 5: Morning Practice
The tension in the air was palpable as Kageyama continued to lecture Hinata with a harsh tone, emphasizing how useless he thought the smaller boy was on the court. Hinata, fueled by his unrelenting determination, bounced around energetically, trying to make a point. But it seemed that Kageyama's words were like a sharp blade, cutting him down with each sentence.
Just as the argument was escalating, a sudden hush fell over the group as they all turned their heads to see an unexpected arrival. Tanaka walked into the gym, his eyes drooping with a far-away expression on his face. His calm demeanor was in stark contrast to the heated exchange happening in front of him.
Sugawara couldn't resist asking, "Hey, what's up with Tanaka? He's never this quiet." Daichi nodded in agreement, equally concerned.
Nishinoya, unable to handle the silence, charged forward, shouting at Tanaka to snap out of it. But his friend's response caught them all off guard.
"Oh, it turns me on when she looks at me like that!" Tanaka exclaimed, causing everyone to freeze.
"What are you talking about?" Hinata asked, curious about his senpai's sudden change in behavior.
As Tanaka explained what had happened that morning with (y/n), Nishinoya couldn't contain his tears of envy and happiness, patting his friend on the back for such incredible progress. Hinata looked over at his senpai with amazement, his eyes sparkling with admiration. But the rest of the team had mixed reactions. Some grumbled over the news, feeling a bit jealous of Tanaka's luck, while others blushed at the image of (y/n) falling onto them.
The door of the gymnasium suddenly opened, revealing (y/n) along with Kiyoko and Keishin; signaling it was time for practice to start.
Smiling, (y/n) made her way over to Hinata and Tsukishima, ready to work with them on their receives again. A light tap on her shoulder caught her attention. Turning around, (y/n) was met with Sugawara smiling sweetly at her, offering to help her since he had already helped Hinata a little with his receives before. Nodding her head enthusiastically, (y/n) scurried off with the three, leaving everyone else to continue their grumbling.
All through morning practice, (y/n) worked with the three, making sure the two first years got their stance right and worked on getting their reflexes right. Sugawara was an excellent mentor, offering gentle guidance and encouragement every step of the way.
Hinata was like a ball of energy, bouncing around the court and soaking up every correction that (y/n) gave him. His enthusiasm was infectious, and (y/n) couldn't help but smile as she watched him improve. Tsukishima, on the other hand, was less enthusiastic. He followed along with the drills, but he was quick to make snarky comments whenever (y/n) came over to correct his stance.
Despite Tsukishima's teasing, (y/n) didn't let it get to her. She knew that he was just trying to get a rise out of her, and she wasn't about to give him the satisfaction. Instead, she focused on her training and tried to ignore his comments as best she could.
As the practice continued, (y/n) found herself growing more comfortable with Sugawara. He was easy to talk to, and he had a way of making her feel at ease. When he complimented her on her teaching skills, she couldn't help but blush. The way he smiled at her made her heart race, and she found herself wanting to get to know him better.
"Th-thanks, Sugawara-senpai," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Call me Suga," he replied with a grin. "Everyone else does."
(Y/n) let out a small squeak at his words, causing Hinata and Tsukishima to shoot her a curious look. She tried to play it cool, but she couldn't shake the feeling that they were watching her every move. For once the two boys agreed on something, they did not like how their senpai was getting so close to (y/n).
Meanwhile, the other members of the team couldn't help but feel a little envious as they watched (y/n) working with their three lucky teammates. Each of them longed for a chance to work with her and improve their skills, but they knew that for now, they would have to wait their turn.
Nishinoya, in particular, was feeling especially eager to learn from (y/n). As a fellow libero, he was always looking for ways to improve his game and he knew that training with her could be incredibly beneficial.
"Ukai-sensei, please," he pleaded with the coach, "I really want to have the opportunity to work with (y/n)-san. I want to see what I can learn from her."
Keishin couldn't help but chuckle to himself at Nishinoya's enthusiasm. He had anticipated this reaction from the libero and was more than happy to give him a chance to learn from (y/n).
"Later today, we're going to have a little match," he said, a sly smile on his face. "You'll be going up against (y/n), so that's a good chance for you to learn from her."
Nishinoya's eyes widened in excitement at the prospect of going up against (y/n) in a match. He knew it wouldn't be an easy task, but he was more than up for the challenge.
"Hai!" he exclaimed, fist pumping the air in excitement.
The rest of the team watched as Nishinoya practically bounced with excitement, all of them eager to see how the match would play out.
Morning practice ended, and (y/n) was making sure everything was clean and organized. As she looked around, she couldn't help but notice Kageyama's intense gaze on her. Feeling a little uneasy, she decided to confront him.
"Hey, Kageyama. Is there something you wanted to ask me?" she asked, tilting her head.
Kageyama stumbled over his words before finally admitting, "U-um, I was just wondering if you already know what class you're in."
"Yep, I'm in class 1-4," (y/n) replied cheerfully.
Kageyama and Hinata both felt their hearts drop at the news. That meant (y/n) was in the same class as Tsukishima and Yamaguchi. Just as (y/n) was about to turn back to cleaning, Tsukishima sauntered over, ready with one of his snarky remarks.
"I can't believe you're smart enough to be in our class," he quipped.
Without hesitation, (y/n) hurled a ball at Tsukishima's gut, causing him to groan and double over.
"Sorry about that," she said to Kageyama, who couldn't help but smile at the sight.
Yamaguchi, on the other hand, was just happy to have (y/n) in the same class as him. She smiled brightly, telling him she was glad to have him as a classmate.
Turning back to Kageyama, (y/n) smiled and said, "I guess we aren't in the same class, but I'd be more than happy to help you study sometimes!"
Kageyama's eyes widened in surprise before bowing deeply and shouting his usual response, "H-hai!"
As (y/n) made her way to the storage room, she accidentally bumped into someone. Turning around to apologize, she saw the towering figure of Asahi, who was already profusely apologizing to her. She smiled and told him it was no problem, taking the blame for not watching where she was going. However, she couldn't help but notice that his hair was falling out of his bun.
"Oh, your hair!" she exclaimed, "Here, let me fix it for you."
Asahi sat down, and (y/n) gently began to gather his chestnut locks into a neat bun. As she worked, she failed to notice the blush that crept up on Asahi's face. She just smiled to herself, happy to be of help. Once his hair was back in place, she patted his shoulder reassuringly.
Asahi thanked her, but also mentioned that it was fine for her to just call him Asahi, like everyone else did. (Y/n) beamed at him, feeling grateful to be on such friendly terms with the team's ace. She promised to remember to use his first name from now on, and then went back to her cleaning duties.
As she walked away, (y/n) couldn't help but notice the other members of the team gawking at Asahi. It seemed like they were all surprised to see their usually reserved and serious third-year being so casual and friendly with her. She just shrugged it off, happy to have made another friend on the team.
Back in the storage room, (y/n) diligently worked to organize the volleyballs, carefully inspecting each one to ensure that they were in perfect condition. As she was lost in her thoughts, a soft cough interrupted her focus, and she looked up to see Ennoshita standing before her with a friendly smile on his face, holding an additional volleyball.
"You forgot this one." He said.
Grateful for the reminder, (y/n) smiled and took the ball from him. "Oh, thanks Ennoshita-senpai!" she said with a genuine grin.
The second year returned her smile before placing the ball in the cart next to her, his eyes scanning the shelves to see if there was anything else he could assist her with. Noticing his helpfulness, (y/n) spoke up. "Actually, could you help me with something else? I could use another set of hands," she asked him, grateful for the assistance.
"Of course," he replied with an eager nod. "What can I do to help?"
Together, they worked in silence, with Ennoshita following (y/n)'s lead as they quickly and efficiently reorganized the storage room. After they had finished, Ennoshita turned to her, still wearing his friendly smile.
"Is there anything else I can help you with?" he asked, his brown eyes meeting hers.
Grateful for his kindness, (y/n) shook her head. "No, thank you. You've been a huge help already."
As they walked out of the storage room together, they continued to chat, discussing everything from the upcoming practice match to their schedule of today. The sound of their laughter and easy conversation echoed through the halls, causing more than a few heads to turn in surprise.
'When the hell did Ennoshita get to her?!'
Once everything was clean, (y/n) gathered her belongings and made her way towards the door, eager to get changed for her first class. However, before she could make her escape, she heard her name being called out.
"Hey (y/n), hold on a sec!" It was Daichi, the team captain of Karasuno's volleyball team. He approached her with a serious expression on his face. "I was wondering if you'd be able to go over some receives with me after lunch. I know you're probably busy, but I thought it'd be a good chance for me to see what I could improve on."
(Y/n) was taken aback by the request. Daichi was one of the most respected and skilled players on the team, and she couldn't help but feel flattered that he was seeking her out for help. "Yeah, for sure, Sawamura-senpai!" she responded with a smile. "I'd be happy to!"
As she turned to make her way towards the clubroom, (y/n) didn't notice the huge grin on Daichi's face. She couldn't help but feel a little nervous at the thought of spending alone time with him.
As she made her way through the hallway, (y/n) kept thinking about what they would talk about during lunch. Would they discuss volleyball strategies, or would they talk about their personal lives? The thought made her feel both excited and anxious.
Finally reaching the clubroom, (y/n) quickly changed into her school uniform and grabbed her books before heading towards her next class. As she walked, she could feel a sense of anticipation for what was to come during her lunch break.
