Chapter 40: Tutoring

As the day's practice drew to a close, the lingering effects of the study-induced chaos still hung in the air. The Karasuno team members dispersed, their minds preoccupied with the upcoming exams and the daunting task of maintaining their academic standing. Amidst the commotion, (y/n) made a swift exit, feeling a sense of urgency to assist Kiyoko in finding a new manager for the team.

Arriving home, (y/n) wasted no time and immediately reached out to Yachi, her fingers dancing across the screen as she composed a message. The prospect of finding a new manager was daunting, but (y/n) knew that Yachi possessed the qualities needed to excel in such a role. The message carried a mix of excitement and trepidation as (y/n) invited Yachi to join the volleyball team as a manager.

The message read: "Hey Yachi! I hope you're doing well. Something unexpected happened today, and we're in need of a new team manager. I know it's a lot to ask, but your organizational skills and dedication would be a perfect fit. Would you be interested in joining the team as our manager?"

As the message was sent, (y/n) anxiously awaited Yachi's response. Minutes felt like hours, and the anticipation grew. Finally, a familiar notification chimed, indicating a reply from Yachi.

Yachi: "Oh, (y/n)-san, this is quite unexpected! I've never considered becoming a manager before. I'm not sure if I have what it takes..."

(Y/n): "I understand your hesitation, Yachi. It's a big responsibility, but I truly believe in your abilities. You're organized, reliable, and you have a great eye for detail. Plus, it would give us a chance to spend more time together!"

Yachi: "That's true... I do want to spend more time with you... Okay, (y/n)-san, I'll give it a try. But please promise me you'll guide me through this new role."

(Y/n): "Absolutely, Yachi! I'll be there every step of the way, and the team will be thrilled to have you on board. Thank you for taking this leap with us."

With their exchange drawing to a close, (y/n) felt a sense of relief wash over her. The weight of finding a new manager for the Karasuno volleyball club had lifted off her shoulders. Yachi's agreement to join the team meant she would have a capable and dedicated individual to provide support both on and off the court. It was a significant step towards the team's continued growth and success.

But there was another layer to (y/n)'s excitement. Yachi's decision meant that she would be spending more time with her, getting to know her better and forging a deeper friendship. They would share in the triumphs and challenges of the team, their connection growing stronger as they worked together towards their shared goals.

Lost in her thoughts, (y/n) was snapped back to reality by the commotion outside. Hinata's persistent pleas and Tsukishima's snarky remarks filled the air, drawing her curiosity. She couldn't resist poking her head out to witness the amusing spectacle unfolding before her.

"Hey, I only hear the short one asking," Tsukishima teased, relishing in the opportunity to ruffle the feathers of his teammates. His playful jabs seemed to be his way of keeping the team on their toes, always striving to prove themselves. "Maybe you should ask too, King."

Kageyama, typically reserved but not one to back down from a challenge, grumbled out a plea, his voice drowned out by the loudness of his surroundings. Keishin began to approach the group, prepared to scold them for causing a scene once again. However, before he could unleash his reprimand, (y/n) stepped in, intercepting him with a knowing smile and a playful wink.

"I couldn't help but overhear your conversation, since you were screaming," (y/n) began, her voice filled with amusement as she glanced back at Keishin, who couldn't help but stifle a snicker. "But if you want, I could help you tutor them, String Bean."

The exclamation of admiration from Hinata didn't come as a surprise. His eyes widened with awe as he exclaimed, "(Y/n)-san! You're so amazing!" It was clear that Hinata saw (y/n) as someone to look up to, someone who could guide him both on and off the court.

Kageyama, although less expressive, mumbled his thanks, a mix of gratitude and bashfulness coloring his words. (Y/n) could sense his appreciation and the weight of his desire to improve.

Tsukishima, known for his snark and sharp tongue, couldn't resist the opportunity to provoke (y/n). A smug smirk played on his face as he responded, "Well, if you want to spend some time with me, you can just ask Munchkin-san. But I don't want to end up with a third student. Are you sure you're smart enough to be a tutor?"

Undeterred by Tsukishima's attempt to challenge her, (y/n) responded with unwavering confidence. "I saw you got a 94 on the last quiz in class," she stated matter-of-factly, refusing to let his sarcastic comment go unchecked.

Tsukishima raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by (y/n)'s straightforward reply. "Your point being?" he inquired, his curiosity tinged with a hint of annoyance.

With a mischievous smile, (y/n) met his gaze. "I got 100," she revealed, her tone laced with playful superiority. "Guess this means I'll be tutoring all of you since, you know, it's clear you aren't smart enough."

Keishin, who had been eavesdropping from behind the store door, burst into laughter, tears forming in his eyes at the banter unfolding before him. It was clear that (y/n) had a way of keeping the team on their toes, even challenging the sharp-witted Tsukishima.

Unfazed by (y/n)'s retort, Tsukishima maintained his smirk. "Still got some bite, I see," he remarked, a hint of amusement seeping into his voice.

"Yup," (y/n) responded nonchalantly, not one to be easily shaken. "Well, I'll see you guys tomorrow. Good luck with studying tonight, meaning you better study tonight!"

As (y/n) turned to leave, a mix of anticipation and amusement filled the air. The prospect of tutoring the four first-years brought a sense of camaraderie and lightheartedness to the challenges ahead. (Y/n) knew that this experience would not only help the boys improve academically but also forge deeper connections within the team. It was another opportunity for them to grow together, to support each other both on and off the court.

With a mischievous glimmer in her eyes, (y/n) couldn't help but wonder what kind of adventures and unexpected moments awaited them on their tutoring journey.

Back inside the cozy shop, (y/n) decided to reach out to her friends from the Nekoma team, eager to share the exciting news.

(Y/n): Hey guys! So, I don't know if you've heard, but we're coming to Tokyo!!

(Y/n): Karasuno has been invited to join your training camp with the other schools. I'm thrilled to see you all again!

Meowhawk: Wahh! That's awesome! I'll finally get a rematch against Ryuu! And we'll definitely work on your delinquent faces, (y/n)-san!

MamaCat: I can't wait to see you again, (y/n)-san! But make sure you all get enough rest and don't neglect your studies, okay? We don't want you falling sick before your exams!

KentasPapa: Are you bringing Kenta along? Has he been eating properly? Does he get along with other dogs at the dog park?

GamerKitty: I thought Yaku was the mother of this group, not Inuoka. Anyway, I'm excited that you and the Karasuno team are coming to Tokyo, (y/n)-san.

MamaCat: Kenma, you actually said something! And I am NOT a mother!

(Y/n): You guys crack me up. And yes, Inuoka, Kenta will be joining us. He misses you all. He's doing great and gets along well with other animals. Oh, and he really likes Suga-senpai too.

(Y/n): And don't worry, Yaku, I'll make sure that everyone, including myself, is in top condition.

(Y/n): Yamamoto-senpai, Tanaka-senpai is just as excited for the rematch!

(Y/n): Hi Kenma! Hinata and Kageyama are thrilled to see you. But you know how intense Kageyama can get sometimes.

BedHeadNeko: Oho, we get to see our little Kitten again ;)

BedHeadNeko: By the way, we have a new member in our team. You'll have to analyze him when you get here. Also, consider me your personal escort to your room after practices ;)

GamerKitty: Don't be weird, Kuroo.

GamerKitty: Ignore him, (y/n)-san. He's being his usual weird self.

MamaCat: Yeah, please stop with the winky faces.

Meowhawk: *glares*

(Y/n): You guys never fail to entertain me!

(Y/n): Anyway, I'm going to bed soon, but I wanted to give you all an update. Keep me posted on how Interhigh goes for you, okay? Good luck, guys!

(Y/n) powered off her phone after exchanging goodbyes with the Nekoma boys, a contented smile gracing her face at the thought of the upcoming challenges and rekindling the fierce rivalry with her friends from Nekoma. The anticipation of facing each other on the court once again fueled her competitive spirit, and she couldn't wait to exchange victories, share moments of growth, and create lasting memories together.

...

"You two are complete idiots," Tsukishima grumbled, his annoyance evident as he went through Hinata and Kageyama's answers. His face contorted in utter disgust, and he shook his head in disappointment as he handed the papers to (y/n).

As (y/n) glanced at the responses, a sense of disbelief washed over her. The answers were beyond subpar, and it was difficult for her to find any words of reassurance. She couldn't help but feel frustrated. 'I knew they struggled, but this is the simplest material on the exam!' The sheer disappointment overwhelmed her, and she slammed her head on the table in defeat.

Yamaguchi, understanding her frustration, gently patted her back, attempting to offer comfort. Meanwhile, Tsukishima continued to belittle his teammates, taking every opportunity to point out their flaws.

"Honestly," he started, his voice laced with condescension. "Not even Munchkin-san has any hope for you two."

"Don't speak for me!" (y/n) interjected, her voice firm. "It's just a little shocking, that's all. Look, both of you, I know you're capable of answering these questions. Hinata, you're rushing, so take a moment to calm down and read the questions multiple times before answering. And Kageyama, you need to clear your head and stop overthinking."

The two first-years nodded earnestly, their determination shining through. Despite Tsukishima's continuous jabs, they remained resolute in their desire to improve. However, the criticisms and negativity were beginning to take their toll.

Just as the tension was building, Daichi approached the group, sensing the need for intervention. He began making hand signals, and Kageyama responded instantly, understanding the message conveyed. Curious, (y/n) inquired about how long it took the setter to learn those signals, to which he proudly responded that he had learned them the same day he saw them.

In that moment, any excuse Kageyama had for not being able to memorize the material faded away. The realization hit him that his exceptional abilities extended beyond the court, and he had the capacity to absorb and retain information with astonishing speed and accuracy.

Daichi's timely intervention not only provided a valuable solution but also shifted the atmosphere. It reminded everyone that they were a team, constantly learning and growing together. (Y/n) couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of hope and determination for Hinata and Kageyama.

Tsukishima, witnessing the transformation, grumbled under his breath but couldn't deny the progress that had been made. The conversation shifted from criticism to encouragement, as they discussed strategies to overcome their individual challenges.

With newfound optimism and a supportive environment, Hinata and Kageyama set their sights on improvement, knowing that their teammates had their backs. They understood that learning was a continuous journey, and their commitment to growth would propel them forward.

As the practice session continued, the clubroom echoed with the sound of determined voices and the unwavering support of their teammates. The challenges they faced only served to strengthen their resolve, and they emerged from the experience with a newfound determination to conquer their academic struggles together.
