Chapter 104: Karasuno VS Aoba Johsai - The Second Set

After that incredibly reckless attack from Kyoutani, Oikawa wasn't really sure what to say, fortunaly Iwaizumi did know what to say, or do. The third year ace smacked the second year on the head and scolded him for being reckless.

(Y/n) was observing the interactions between the Seijoh players and couldn't help the chuckle that escapted her mouth, 'So, is that the surspise they had in store for us. I'm sure he's much better than what we saw just now, let's see what happens in the second set.'

The second set was about to begin and the Karasuno players instantly noticed that the new guy was staying for this set, taking the place of Kunime.

'He's probably glad he gets a break.' (y/n) chukled again.

"It's that guy again!" Hinata exclaimed "This time, they have him out from the start."

"If they're swapping him in for Kunimi, that probably means he's really smart." Kageyama started "Stay on your guard."

Just like Daichi, (y/n) didn't really seem convinced 'He doesn't look like much of a thinker to me. He seems like the do first, ask questions later type.'

Glancing over at the Seijoh team once more, (y/n) noticed that Kyoutani only seemed to respond to Iwaizumi, completely ignoring Oikawa. This was enough to make her laugh.

"Seems like (y/n)-san is laughing at us now." Kunimi spoke up.

Kyoutani started glaring in her direction, taking offense at being laughed at. This earned him another smack from Iwaizumi.

"Do not glare at her." Iwaiumi looked very intimidating "She deserves all the respect you can manage, got it?"

"Yes sir." Kyoutani grumbled, this time looking over at (y/n) with a somewhat curious expression on his face, why did his senpai care so much for this girl.

After Kyoutani's reckless attack, Oikawa found himself at a loss for words. Fortunately, it was Iwaizumi who stepped in to address the situation. The experienced third-year ace smacked Kyoutani on the head, reprimanding him for his recklessness.

Watching these interactions from the sidelines, (y/n) couldn't help but chuckle softly to herself. "So, is that the surprise they had in store for us? I'm sure he's much better than what we saw just now. Let's see what happens in the second set."

As the second set was about to begin, it was clear that Seijoh was making a change. The new player, Kyoutani, was staying in, taking the place of Kunimi.

"He's probably glad he gets a break," (y/n) chuckled again, noticing Kunimi heading to the bench.

"It's that guy again!" Hinata exclaimed, his eyes fixed on Kyoutani. "This time, they have him out from the start."

Kageyama, ever the strategist, added his insights. "If they're swapping him in for Kunimi, that probably means he's really smart. Stay on your guard."

However, (y/n) couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at that assessment. 'He doesn't look like much of a thinker to me. He seems like the do-first, ask-questions-later type,' she thought to herself, studying Kyoutani closely.

Observing the dynamics within the Seijoh team, (y/n) noticed that Kyoutani appeared to respond only to Iwaizumi, completely ignoring Oikawa. This observation brought forth another chuckle.

"Seems like (y/n)-san is laughing at us now," Kunimi spoke up, clearly annoyed by the situation.

Kyoutani, taking offense at being laughed at, started to glare in her direction. However, this earned him another smack from the imposing Iwaizumi.

"Do not glare at her," Iwaizumi warned sternly. "She deserves all the respect you can manage, got it?"

"Yes, sir," Kyoutani grumbled, this time looking at (y/n) with a somewhat curious expression, wondering why his senpai cared so much about this girl.

The second set was finally underway, with Karasuno serving first this time. Unfortunately, Asahi hit the ball out, an unusual sight that left the ace visibly frustrated. Oikawa, following his previous pattern, served with tremendous power, though this time he was improving his control.

'Another extra powerful one... But this time... He's getting better at controlling them... That's not good...' (y/n) sighed, noticing Oikawa's serve improvement.

Daichi, too, had a worried expression on his face, recognizing the growing threat of Oikawa's serve.

The set continued with Tsukishima serving for Karasuno. His serve grazed the net, and Iwaizumi had to make a diving receive. Oikawa, ever the strategist, set the ball for Kyoutani, calling out to him using the unusual nickname "Mad Dog."

'That's his nickname?!' (y/n) couldn't help but chuckle before growing a little puzzled. Kyoutani's approach to the net was nearly parallel, an unconventional choice.

Even though there were 3 blockers, Kyoutani could spike besides them thanks to his strange approach, scoring a point for Seijoh.

The next rally started with Iwaizumi serving, Daichi managed to receive it but it went back over the net. Oikawa got ready to set the ball as mutliple attackers made their approach. Hinata noticed the hesitance in Kindaichi and went to block Kyoutani who got to spike the ball and managed to score another point. The momentum was for Aoba Johsai this set.

Iwaizumi got to serve again, but Daichi received it again, sending the ball to Kageyama. Hinata got to spike, but Iwaizumi received it. During this attack, Kindaichi didn't hesitate which made Hinata focus on him. But Oikawa set the ball for Kyoutani again, who charged at it and scored another point, whilst also smashing against Hanamaki.

Aoba Johsai was scoring point after point, but they did look clumsy doing so.

Iwaizumi messed up his third serve, Karasuno finally got antoher point. Now it was Kageyama's turn to serve. Hanamaki received it and send it towards Oikawa. Hinata was watching Kyoutani as he made his approach, ready to score again. But, Oikawa set the ball for Kindaichi, taking advantage of the situation. Another point for Seijoh.

'This won't be easy...' (y/n) sighed.

As if to confirm her thoughts, Daichi spoke up "This is a Blue Castle we've never seen before."

The score was now 5-2 for Aoba Johsai.

"You're looking frustrated, Nii-chan." (y/n) spoke up "Have some faith in them, they'll figure it out."

The set continued with Kinadaichi serving, Nishinoya easily send the ball to Kageyama, who let Hinata spike it. Matsukawa blocked his path again, allowing Iwaizumi to receive it with a dive. Hanamaki covered and called out to Kyoutani to hit it. The ball was close to the net and there were 3 blockers ready, the Seijoh players were calling out for Kyoutani to bounce it back but he didn't listen. The ball got blocked and Karasuno scored a point.

The younger Aoba Johsai coach started yelling at Kyoutani that there are more ways to attack than just smashing the ball.

"But scoring doesn't feel good if I don't smash it!" The second year responded.

As the Seijoh team and coaches looked a bit annoyed, (y/n) burst out in laughter again which caused Kyoutani to blush and glare at her before he sensed the angry presense of Iwaizumi behind him, he instantly turned away.

"What was that about him being smart?" Tanaka asked Kageyama, who got flustered as well.

The set continued and Kyoutani got to spike again, make another approach paralel to the net, but this time he spiked the ball into the net.

"He really is like a double edged sword." (y/n) chuckled.

Takeda looked a bit confused before Keishin continued "He's as dangerous for Seijoh as he is for their opponent."

Kyoutani had another chance to shine as he came up to serve. His serve was as fierce as his spike, but this time, it went out.

The set continued with a long rally, and Seijoh even employed a fake botched pass to manipulate Karasuno's blockers to one side, enabling Kyoutani to have a free swing from the other side. Seijoh managed to extend their lead with point after point, their play, although effective, seemed somewhat clumsy.

When Oikawa predicted the timing of Hinata's firts back attack, it was clear that something had to be done. It was time to switch things up.

Keishin called over Sugawara, so that they could discuss a few things before he would go onto the court as a substitute.

Oikawa got to serve again and this time he got it in. The tension was clear as reality seemed to hit the Karasuno team. The second serve hit the net, Nishinoya managed to receive it as Tsukishima covered and Tanaka scored a point.

Now, the time for the switch came, Tsukishima went out and Sugawara came in.

Sugawara was feeling nervous but he was ready to change the momentum. He served the ball right in front of Kyoutani so that he won't be able to attack this time. Kindaichi got to spike but Sugawara manged to receive, looking relieved. Hinata scored a point by hitting Kindaichi's block and making the ball go out.

Another serve from Sugawara aimed at Kyoutani, completely limiting his movements. Iwaizumi got to spike this time but Daichi received it. Now it was time for the setter switch, Sugawara took the setter position and Kageyama went back to attack and score a point with an impressive line shot.

Karasuno was finally closing the gap, the score was now 17-16 for Seijoh.

Seijoh called a time-out. Glancing over, (y/n) voiced hes supicion "They're going to pull the new guy from receiving, seems like this strategy won't work anymore."

"They always adjust so fast..." Sugawara sighed.

"Just try again with your next serve and see what happens, adjust if needed." Keishin stated.

The time-out came to an end and Sugawara served at Kyoutani again, as expected Hanamaki jumped in to receive it instead. Which allowed Kyoutani to spike and score another point.

The strategy didn't work anymore, so Keishin decided to sub Sugawara out and let Tuskishima join again.

The set continued with Kyoutani scoring point after point for Seijoh, they hit the 20 point mark first. Keishin desiced to call a time-out.

The tension was high with the Karasuno players, they really needed to win this set, having to play a third set would be very hard.

The set continued and Kyoutani scored again. And again when he got to serve.

Things are not looking good for Karasuno, they were forced to call their second time-out. They had to switch the momentum and a certain player on the side was making it clear that he was ready to do so.

The score reached 23-19 for Seijoh, now was the time to give him another chance.

Karasuno called for another substitution, and Hinata left the court, making way for Yamaguchi.

The team rallied around Yamaguchi, offering words of motivation. This time, he didn't seem as nervous; he was determined to make a difference.

Yamaguchi jumped to serve, Watari made the call that the serve would go out, but he was wrong. Yamaguchi scored a serve point for Karasuno with his jump floater. Time to switch the momentum.

Time for Yamaguchi's second serve, he aimed it right at Kyoutani who was ready to receive it , but failed. Yamaguchi scored again.

Third serve for Yamaguchi, this time Hanamaki was ready to receive it with an overhand pass. Iwaizumi spiked it down, but Yamaguchi got the ball up using his chest. Kageyama covered and Tsukishima spiked it down. Another point for Karasuno.

Yamaguchi got ready for his fourth serve, but Seijoh called their second time-out.

"Nicely done! Making them call a time-out!" (y/n) congratulated the freckled boy.

During the time-out, it was clear to (y/n) that Yamaguchi was feeling pride and he was ready to continue playing, she couldn't help but continue to smile at him.

The time-out came to an end and Yamaguchi was ready to serve again, not even the Seijoh libero was in time to receive it. Another point for Karasuno.

23-23

Karasuno has finally caught up with Seijoh.

Time for Yamaguchi's fifth serve in a row, unfortunatly this one did spin a little bit and Iwaizumi managed to receive it. Tsukishima managed to touch Hanamaki's spike and Tanaka dived for it, Kageyama covered and Asahi got ready to spike. He hit the 3 man block and made the ball go out. Another point for Karasuno.

23-24 match point for Karasuno.

Yamaguchi served again, feeling good about his serve, but this time Watari did receive it, giving Iwaizumi the chance to spike again.

24-24

Yamaguchi was swapped out again, feeling somewhat satisfied with what he accomplished but still feeling the desire for more.

The deuce began, both teams scoring point after point, not letting the other team get ahead.

26-26 and Oikawa is serving again.

Nishinoya failed to receive the first serve.

27-26

Daichi and Nishinoya agreed that the two of them couldn't do the receiving alone, so Asahi came to join them. This time, Daichi managed to receive it, sending the ball over the net. Kindaichi came to instantly spike it down, but Tanaka manged to barely get the ball up again. Kageyama set the ball for Asahi, but Hanamaki received it. Kyoutani was ready for the spike, but Oikawa set it for Iwaizumi who smashed it down.

28-26 Seijoh won the second set.
